Epic/Large ship counter idea

By Piratefly, in X-Wing

Zero-G Spacetroopers

I'd love to see these in game. Or at least a playable card to enable them.

However the mechanics for them being deployed are figured out they could have a few different effects.

1.If deployed to an Epic ship they would start taking down systems. Maybe have a DoT (damage over time) effect. Where every 3(?) turns they damage or disable a system. It could be based on a die roll or some such.

Rebels could also have a way to deploy counter troops or even fire on their own ship to take out the Spacetroopers.

2. If deployed to a Large ship they could have the same DoT effect or they could board the ship. The pilot would have to fend them off. His attack/defense would be based on his pilot skill. While the pilot was battling them the ship would essentially be disabled.

3. Possibly, depending on balance issues, if the pilot was killed the Spacetroopers could assume control of the Large ship; the Imperial player would control it for the rest of the game. It would have to have a penalty, maybe hull damage since the Spacetroopers would have had to tear holes in it to board. They would have a very low pilot skill too.

The Rebels version would be suicide bombers. Because, of course, they are terrorists after all. ;)

Change a game play mechanic, add a mechanic. What are your thoughts?

They sound a little like buzz droids mechanically.

This is making it all a bit overly complicated. The beauty of X-wing has always been simplicity.

And seizing control of a 120 point ship? Absolutely not.

Better just to make boarding actions and similar its own game (and there are numerous systems that will work for this! Don't wait for FFG to make one, play a miniatures game that is packed isn't a tight little box for once).

It would add another level of depth and possibly over complicate. It wouldn't necessarily be a common occurrence, though.

I do agree though, there is beauty in simplicity. The best games offer a lot of variety in a simple package.

These guys were discussed at length in another thread. Sorry I couldn't find a link. I love the idea of them. In fact I bought some 3d printed ones, but I have never gotten around to using them. If I did I think I would make them 5 to a base. The stats would be attack 5 range 1 only, defense 1, but it would increase by 1 each time one of their 5 hull was lost to represent them being harder to hit once the "cloud" thins out. Of course they would lose one attack each time they lost a hull. They would take a bomb slot and be dropped into play like a bomb. Actions would be target lock and focus which they always get. Cannot be stressed. Pilot skill 0. Of course no shields. Movement would be just a 1 straight template against any side and the can move anyway and adjust their facing to anyway they want at the end of their movement.

Sigh...

There is absolutely no precedent for the rebels ever using suicide bombers, this suggestion really does nothing to defend your case

Seriously? A rabble bunch of teenagers attacking a fully armed battle station the size of a small moon in the first movie wasn't considered suicidal?

Okay Luke got a good shot but at some point you have to think the commanders looked at each other and said 'we're gonna die'.

Didn't you see the wink, it was a light hearted comment.

The Rebels did use violence to overthrow the reigning government. The Empire, more or less, had order in the galaxy. It wasn't until the Rebels started causing trouble that the Empire had to start blowing up planets.
