An adult thing happened to me today...
You don't need 2 Imperial Raiders.
Blasphemer!
Turn the heat down.
Pretend your on hoth.
Sleep inside a tauntaun
As a college Junior, I'm not looking forward to this whole "adulthood" thing. It's progressively getting worse already.
Depends on what your major is. I graduated a few years ago with a BS. in Mechanical Engineering and have been living very comfortably since. My girlfriend graduated with a BA in Creative Writing and had to go back to school to get a Masters in Education to even get a job. And is still not living anywhere near as comfortably as I am (well, yes she is because we split everything, but she wouldn't be if we weren't attached at the hip).
But regardless of your education and your job, I've actually turned a slight profit from X wing. When I went to the Canadian Nationals, I saw folks there with FFG acrylic stuff that clearly had no clue how to play the game or what to do. That made me realize that I don't really need the fancy FFG stuff to prove that I'm a good player, so I sold it all on Ebay for ~1600. I figure that I have ~$400 in the actual pieces (plus I won a CR-90) plus another $50 in my case, and $40 for my mat, and $100 for my 3rd party tokens, totaling ~$600. With the remaining $1000, I've probably spent about $600 on travel expenses to go to regionals/gencon and entrance fees (and fuel for store champs), so I've actually netted ~$400. Which I probably spent on additional costs that I otherwise wouldn't have occurred - late night redbulls for the drive home, eating out during Gencon, , mileage depreciation on my vehicle, etc.
So, I'm totally content in putting money into X wing. It's a great hobby and fun game that if played correctly, doesn't actually end up costing too much if you can do well at a regional (reminder, those dice for top 8 last year were going for over $300 when they first got released, and still go for 150-200).

Well, fortunately, I switched out of music and into Computer Science. Gotta try and find a good internship somewhere before it's too late.
That's incredible to hear about your X-wing profit, though. I've got a handful of tokens here and there, but haven't been able to go to regionals before. Plus, I love my official acrylics and would have to be in some financial trouble before I parted with em.
Welcome to adult life! *enter dark evil laughter here*
Saving, yes, saving is good, especially for the earlier announced unexpected payments you never considered before.
especially now that you're in the phase where money seems to evaporize in your hands ;-)
Selling organs is a bad plan though. As is non-eating. But spending what others spend on candy or smoking on x wing is just fine, it's even cheaper!
I guess I fall into the lucky ones column. My wife let me paint Star Wars planets on the walls of the dining room which houses my action figure collection. And she is the one who bought tickets to Celebration and told me we were going. ![]()
One thing I used to do to feed my wotc minis habit was to squirrel away all extra change and any other cash I wasn't expecting to get (birthdays, etc). That became the buying budget and surprisingly can add up to quite a bit over many months. The advantage now is I've been doing the "adult" thing longer than not with no kids, so enough expendable only to waste on x-wing.
Judging by what you have said regarding the size of your apartment .. You won't have room for 2 raiders.
Could be worse: He could be playing warhammer 40k and need two landraiders...
LOL, love it, the realization that life as you knew it is over. You just started, it gets worse, much worse...
Money for gaming? wait until you have to pay for your stuff and stuff for kids too!
And here I thought this thread was going to start ... Dear X-WIng Forum, You'll never believe ...
YUP... you might want to do a piece of nice fruit for lunch, and if you have a playmate be sure they can buy their own food and pay their own rent and so forth...
Welcome!

I'll be honest: I wasn't expcting this thread to evolve into diatery advice and good eating tips.
But It's good to read! Carry on.
Also : don't skip breakfast! It's the most important meal of the day.
Edited by Robin GravesAnd another thing... chicks don't dig tighty whiteys so swap those out if you're sportin em, go with the always solid choice of boxers or if you have the abs for'em boxer briefs.
I do adult things all the **** time to get paid adult money and then I piss it away on childish things; it keeps me young at heart. ![]()

What makes you think Zylynn is a guy? Or a straight guy?
That's somewhat adulthood. Talk to me when you can't afford a Raider because you're paying for student loans, a mortgage, diapers, and daycare.
I used to work for a furniture store and knew a manager that would always tell the salespeople: "You want to make more money as a salesperson? Go buy a new car. You'll find a way to make that payment!"
I feel the same is with everything, you want two raiders? You'll find a way
Adult stuff is all about that balance. But yeah, don't skip breakfast. Lunch, sure. But not breakfast!
First you get the studies
Then you get the job
Finally you get the raider... or the girlĀ... or if you're lucky, a girl who will accept your love of X-Wing and let you buy a Raider
Psh, naw. A girl who will get a Raider for you... and one for herself, too.
Even Admiral Akbar knows!

I grew up once .. didn't care for it.

Wait, does anybody think tiny whitey's are sexy? (Ok ok Rule 36, I get it!)

But I am happier for it. The house we bought is ours, no longer listening to the landlord!
Kids are fun, I shall try to teach them playing boardgames, cardgames, and heck, why not x wing too?
Maybe I ll lose some mini's along the way due to wreckage, there is going to be lemonade over my academy pilot cards, and 4 of the twelve dice go missing, and as a surprise they will paint my future starviper 'to look more like a butterfly'. But it will be fun for sure. the mini's are not supposed to gather dust on a shelf :-)
To get back to the OP, you'll find a way. Part time job, selling stuff you don't need anymore, ride a bicycle instead of a car. Et voila, you'll have money for healthy food, stylish clothing, to take a gall/guy to dinner, aaaand 1 starviper.
Don't spend money on expensive phones, a new computer twice a year, the church or any other religious institution. Your new nearby FLGS will recognize you soon enough and after a month or so the table is ready with a gaming tile, your opponent is unpacking his squad and the store-owner asks you to chip in on the usual amounts of pizza he already ordered as he knew you guys were comming!

Oh, and donating plasma will not only get you good cash for hobby money, it will make you need to buy less booze to get drunk that night.
Seriously, you can probably pre-order the Imperial Raider after one donation of plasma.
Wait, where do I go to get paid for this? Blood drives on campus dont give us anything...
You have to google it. Look up sell plasma. It's not donating blood, but selling plasma. There are always drives to get blood for free, but you can get paid for it. I knew a guy in college who did it so much that he got a tax return from them!!! The first few times usually pays more to sucker you in, but it still pays.
