Gonk

By Rogue Dakotan, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

So the Gonk Droid is one of my favorite droids. Because Gonk.

The GNK Power droid had a card in the old WOTC Minis game.

He basically would boost allies attacks if they were next to him. And he also had a self destruct.

How would you make that work in IA?

Speed 2. Defense B. (or maybe no defense) Attack n/a Health: 4

Action: Choose an adjacent friendly figure. That figure may add 2 HITS to it's next attack result.

Self Destruct

First. GONK. GONK. Gonk.

I'm gonna redesign him a bit:

Speed 2

Attack: Melee 1G

Health: 4

Defense: None

Cost: 2 points (Single model per card)

Support: Adjacent friendly models may re-roll a single attack die of their choice.

Short: GNK does not block LOS to other models. LOS can be traced through the space GNK occupies as if the space was empty.

Volatile: When GNK is destroyed, roll 1 Green Die and deal the rolled damage to *all* adjacent models.

Gonk gonk.

Is getting damaged by your little gonk buddy blowing up on you worth just a reroll? Hmm.

I like it though. Not sure if he should be able to make an attack though. What would he do, gonk at you?

There was so much crap stuff in WOTC, I hope we don't get buried in crap like that game. They should concentrate on units (like rebel commandos for instance) and lay off the crap. There are so many more "real" models we need, so many iconic characters and units that will take u the next few waves and next couple years before we start reaching for gonk droids, sullastan scouts, k'lor slugs or any of the bloated crap that wotc put out. I already have all that crap lol.

DON'T YOU TALK BAD ABOUT GONK DROIDS!

But yeah. For sure. I can't imagine this game will be nearly as bloated.

Gonk.

I won't pretend I don't have 3 of them lol.

On the bright side we will know what we are buying, unlike when I tried desperately to get a certain emperor model and instead just got 50 dejarik board monsters lol... then I just bought that emperor online anyway lol

Weren't GNK droids basically mobile power cells? I imagine that single green die explosion and single green die attack are from some sort of overload attack. A single green die isnt gonna do much.

And yeah, I doubt we'll see models like this, but it was fun to play along.

I have a lot of those Dejarik monsters too. Though I'm missing two. :( My fiance and I made ourselves a holochess board and they fit on there perfectly. Just two monsters short. Can't remember which ones. I'll have to see how much they are on coolstuff these days.

A big part of the problem with WotC's SWM was their business model. They were putting out 60 brand new pieces each set, which meant that they had to make a lot of crap filler (like the GONK Droids and Sullustan Scouts). I much prefer FFG's model, where (according to X-Wing's pattern) every model is carefully planned and tested, and where each piece is at least moderately useful in competitive play. And when FFG finds that some ships aren't working well (A-Wings or TIE Adv), they make some adjustments to bring them back into the fold. This is definitely a better way to design a skirmish game, IMHO.

Couldn't resist more of a tweak - I'd go for greater risk/reward

Speed 3

Attack: Melee 1G

Health: 5

Defense: None

Cost: 3 points (Single model per card)

Power Surge: When an adjacent friendly figure performs a ranged attack, they may perform a free tech (wrench) attribute test. If successful they add 1 red die to the attack pool for this attack. If the test fails, they receive 1 damage.

Short: GNK does not block LOS to other models. LOS can be traced through the space GNK occupies as if the space was empty.

Volatile: When GNK is destroyed, deal 1 damage to *all* adjacent figures.

High Voltage: Whenever GNK deals damage to a figure they must perform a strength test. A failed test results in the figure being stunned.

*apparently they'd be printing this deployment card in Topps' Wide(tall)vision format :P

Edit - it probably shows, but I have no Skirmish experience - from my limited understanding the above would be campaign only :(

I actually wish it was easier to get "life" pieces like this, but then I guess I am primarily thinking from a roleplaying perspective, where these kinds of figures are great. WotC had random distribution, so didn't make it easy, and most of their models had guns waving around. Droids actually seem to be really expensive on the secondary market (because they only seemed to do a smallish number of them), even if they maybe were not fantastic game wise.

$.99 at Cool Stuff.

Gonk, the original Hodor.

They move only one space at a time and explode like stereotypical fuel barrels if hit.

Then all the other gonks start closing in on the guy who shot the first...

In seriousness, a Gonk's a Power Droid. You'd use them for a mission, escorting it to a control panel.

IG88's campaign mission is about a droid rebellion, I'd love to see gonk take part in that mission.

Tape a knife to the Gonk droid and let him at it! XD

In one role playing game, my character had installed a Light repeating blaster and a shield module on his Gonk droid.

Just remove the behavioural inhibitors... add a targeting module....and let it go!

First rule of Gonk Fight Club...

Gonk?

Gonk?

Assuming you're asking why they're called Gonk droids, its because of the noise the one in the Jawa sandcrawler made.
