Canadians, where do you buy your expansions?

By Foogling, in X-Wing

So as the title suggests I'm wondering where do people get the best deals on X Wing expansions, specifically north of the border. I'm new to the game and working on building up my collection, but besides a few lucky deals on amazon.ca, I can't seem to find anywhere which (after currency conversion, S&H, and taxes) would put me ahead of the MSRP! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks!

PEI here

I get mine at our lgs.

I've ordered some through ebay or geek stop games out of London Ontario

I'm located in Newfoundland! Most times the shipping will put me way over what I can get at my LGS. Amazon may not be ideal, but with Prime I managed to score a decent deal on a HWK and 2xZ95s. Anyone had any luck with TheBookDepository?

www.germangames.com based out of kitchener. flat $10 shipping. name changed recently.

BookDepository is actually pretty awesome, especially if you're just picking up one thing at a time and it isn't available locally. Things usually get here (Halifax) in about a week.

If I'm doing large game orders I generally look at meeplemart, boardgamebliss or greatboardgames all have flat shipping rates and similar prices so it usually comes down to whoever has what I want in.

Meeplemart (www.meeplemart.com) and 401games (401games.ca) are both good, but I always go there in person to pick them up, so I can't speak to their shipping costs.

Never had a problem with them myself and got loads of battletech stuff from them as well as a cheap imp shuttle.

Really depends on how much you are buying. Small orders (1 - 3 ships) are cheapest at FLGS, don't want to pay $10 - $12 shipping on a $20 - $30 order. Medium orders (under $200) I find are cheapest at US sites - you aren't getting free shipping from Canadian retailers so might as well go for the lower US prices and hope to avoid the taxes, which often happens on smaller orders. For large orders, the Canadian sites seem to be the best option, you get free shipping from them and these large orders are likely to get taxed at the border if you order from the US, as well as incur higher shipping costs.

I haven't mentioned Book Depository - good prices, no shipping costs on any order size. Only issue is their stock goes very quickly (less than an hour for the Most Wanted expansion) and large orders may get taxed at the border. They are the cheapest way to get small orders if they have the stock.

Thanks so much for all the replies! I've scoped out the websites and they all look to be cheaper than what I can get here locally!

Just for reference, MW + Slave 1 (my planned order) at my LGS is about $100.

Newfoundland here too. My preference is Great Board Games as long I'm ordering around 4 ships or more. If I'm just buying one ship I'll buy locally from whoever will sell it to me at MSRP, unfortunately that generally only leaves two stores.

A fellow Newfoundlander! Do we have much of a scene/any tournaments around here?

From my looking around different sites this afternoon, I'm between Great Board Games and The Book Depository. On The Book Depository they mention a VAT charge however unlike most sites they don't seem to tell you exactly how much this will be when you place your order. Anyone have experience with this and an estimate of how much it usually is?

From these guys...

I typically order from "Discount Games Store" (most generic name ever, am I right?).

It's largely out of habit and loyalty at this point. They're a US retailer, and they were a fantastic deal over the past few years of currency parity. Less so now, but after running the numbers they're still competitive, and quite possibly the overall best available price (although it's now only a few bucks worth of savings, rather than a larger sum).

They offer flat $5 shipping to Canada, which is my favourite thing about them. I have no idea how they get away with it considering that even Canadian-based retailers charge more than that, but they've been doing it for years.

Their ship prices are variable, and work out to around $13-$14 Canadian. On older waves, there's little if any savings compared to a Canadian discounter. But on new stuff/preorders the discount is a little deeper, and you'll save about a dollar per ship compared to a Canadian seller.

Book Depositoy lost one of my orders (of a book actually, not games) and are doing nothing to replace it. Sadly, they were rather specific medieval texts and weren't cheap, so I'm out a bit of cash right now because of it. Until this incident I'd have said they were quite good. However, they've shown their true colours here and are entirely not replying to emails in my asking where my books are.

anyone ordered wave 6 from meeplemart?

They received their stock last Friday, declared they'd ship Friday and Monday, but I still haven't received any notification for my 2 orders, placed on Dec 22nd and Jan 4th.

It's all good if they're swamped, but I'm really crossing my fingers to get my stuff this week, in time for a tournament Saturday. They're not answering simple queries on their fb page.

I pre-ordered wave 6 from Meeplemart on Black Friday. Sunday evening I got an e-mail from them asking me to pay another 20% over the original price (thanks, Canadian dollar!) and my order shipped Monday evening. I think they are just really busy. I think they only have 2 employees and with the popularity of their Black Friday prices I think they had a lot of pre-orders.

I've used Book Depository for about a dozen orders so far. Worked out well. Sometimes you have to wait a while for it to arrive, and sometimes arrives the next week. No problems so far, though.

As for customs, BD seems to prefer shipping each item separately for some reason, even when I ordered two Z-95s on the same transaction. So customs has never come up.

They have pretty persistent stock issues for some expansions, but that seems more a reflection of the global state of FFG's supply than anything unique to them.

just got a tracking number a little after 9 PM EST - that's the ship I bought in an order for my buddy silentubiquity. So there's still a glimmer of hope for my own order for this week!

I, too, am waiting impatiently on my haul, hoping it gets here in time for two tournies this weekend.

Last update was from Chicago, yesterday. It's gonna be tight.

Everyone who has the option should be buying at their FLGS. It's win-win, you get your stuff day one and you help the stores out with the sale.

Internet orders should only be placed when what you want isn't on the shelf, IMO.

That's a blanket judgment and I resent it.

I support my LFGS just fine, buying stuff like Space Hulk 4th edition at $150 + 15% taxes (despite that I could find it cheaper online), preordering the Raider corvette (which will be close to 125$-150$ I'm guessing, at that FLGS) and various small purchases related to painting, android netrunner and the odd minimal amount of ships every wave.

I can't afford to do ALL my purchases at the LFGS - it would mean compromising on my exploration of the game.

I'm not looking to insult anyone, Mu0n.

You guys mentioned your stuff hasn't come in yet. That issue is one of the major downsides of buying online. Just wanted that point to be made.

Bulk buy the basics, then purchase singles to flush out what you want more of at your FLGS. Also, go to tournaments at FLGS too.

A lot of the online places deliver around the same time my LGS gets it's stock in, actually. If I have to request a specific item it's always been much faster to order it. That said, I do buy almost exclusively from the local place because I consider the owner something of a friend and I hate waiting for deliveries. His prices are also pretty reasonable, since he usually just rounds the suggested price to an even amount or deliberately price matches online stores, depending on the product.
