How to budget and play both Armada and X-Wing

By Goknights12, in Star Wars: Armada

WOW! 20 bucks for the fighter packs. That's more than one ship for X-Wing or a booster for Imp Assault. For a player of X-Wing and someone who really doesn't want to quit but wants to play Armada, is there a way to do it?

I would say the average player doesn't have a ton of disposable income to throw into both games to stay current, so what are you doing to be able to play both, or are you choosing one or the other?

It comes out to just $2.50 per squad if it makes you feel any better

I have decided not to buy the Scum and Villainy ships.

Cut back on the lattes?

I'm just working as much OT as I can. :P

Sell everything, invest disposable income into education, get better job, be able to afford both.
:o

This. Since Imperial Assault and Armada have come into my life, I have gone from only having one regularly expanded game in my collection to three. I would still very much like to see Scum and Villainy on the table eventually, but with this group of expansions all having been on my radar to be purchased at around the same time, X-wing didn't make the cut. I can still have a great deal of fun with what I have. It works out fine for now, but I'll definitely have to see how the three release schedules line up going forward.

Outside of Scum and Villany, upkeep for X-wing is pretty light. I mean the previous wave was just 2 ships.

Yep, I am passing on scum with Armada so close. I already feel bad about buying Imperial Assault as my group of players are just too busy to get through the campaign easily (we can never get everyone there so now have all 6 heros running but on a "drop in" basis depending on who can come). I'm keen to try use Armada and X-wing together, but would much rather save up to buy a nice large setup of Armada that my friends can enjoy trying out, then a third x-wing faction that I won't have time to play.

I'm relatively poor =[

To keep up with Armada, I plan to just put aside a little money each month and buy what I need as it comes up, basically, playing it by ear as things are released.

Miniature games come in spurts. Armada will require a fair bit up front, but then you'll have months off without releases.

So the trick for those needing to find room in the budget is to look for areas you can save on daily that will allow you to stockpile funds for the release of the Waves. What you don't want to do is look for ways to save after the fact. Be preemptive and you will avoid alot of pitfalls.

While I appreciate the real answers I am a little upset over some of the more sarcastic ones. This was meant to be a constructive thread that I think effects more people than just me and to assume that just because I don't have a large amount of disposable cash means I don't have a good job or need more education is just rude. So thank you for your comments but no thanks.

I do like the fact that many have come up with good options. I didn't by IA because I kind of knew already that there is no way that I would get the $100 value out of it that I wanted. As for X-wing I have already built much of my fleet slowly.

I think the best point of conversations like this one is that it is all about perspective. It's a matter of how much you value having the newest release of the expanding game titles you play at the release date and what you are willing to do with whatever amount you've allowed for hobbies in your budget to make it happen. There will be a different narrative for every player with this kind of question.

If you're a tournament player and need to stay on the cutting edge you'll look at this differently than someone who only plays the game casually at the local X-wing night. Scottie's point about the long layoff that will exist after Armada wave 1 is a good one. As someone who doesn't value having Scum and Villainy right now, I'm looking at the impending gap in the expansion release calendar as the place to get some fresh X-wing elements on the table - I'm already planning for the Raider, and perhaps a Scum catch up will align with that release.

Having never collected Descent, I am really unsure what to expect out of Imperial Assault in the future. I worry that the competitive portion of IA may force more "stuff" out on a more regular basis for the sake of keeping the skirmish game fresh. But I have no real frame of reference for IA, it's a wild card for me at the moment.

The problem is that your original post is essentially "How do I be an adult?" and that's better left answered elsewhere.

Yeah the above post was uncalled for.

The problem with you is that you are a jerk. Many people are new to this type of hobby and want to stay current but want to see other peoples thoughts on how they deal with the same issue. So rather than trolling and acting like you are high and mighty just leave the whole post alone. It would be one thing if I posted ,"How do you pay rent and buy every ship X-Wing has to offer to make 100 point lists and 2x Armada starters on release date." Maybe you're the one who needs to learn how to be an adult, or at the very least a decent person.

I've not read all the previous posts so apologies if this has already been suggested. I'm in a similar situation, so not only have I decided to stick to only one faction, but am considering a swap with a friend of mine (who also has limited funds) - basically I give him all the Imperial stuff from my core set, and he gives me all the Rebel stuff from his. Its not ideal as we will miss out on upgrades cards, but its better than nothing and means we can each field a full 300 pt fleet.

I'll buy expansions as I can afford them, starting with the fighter pack. I doubt I'll buy any more X-Wing for a while unless something comes out that I "must have". I have a fair amount of X-Wing stuff - plenty to keep me going. Most of the people I play with are not ultra-competitive so don;t have to worry about keeping up with the current meta etc. (we don't really have one).

This wasn't meant to be vindictive but these kinds of threads are just noise. There are deals everywhere for these games and they come in waves with a reasonable amount of time between them. There are plenty of competitive lists with very few purchasing requirements. With shipping delays, miniature market, and some common sense, what more were you even hoping to gain from this thread?

If you think it's a waste of time, why do you keep commenting here? Wouldn't it be easier to just ignore it?

I am pretty much done with buying x-wing as there is not else I want to buy. So I can focus on Armada sparingly at first so I can see if people are playing it

I'm right there with you, most of the X-Wing stuff that comes out no longer excites me.

Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer. You are essentially asking "How do I get all the toys I want if I can't afford them all?" It's simple, you don't. You either have to pick and choose, or alternate buying them as funds become available, or you modify other aspects of your life that give you more disposable income (you could play this game by candlelight for example). This isn't rocket science.

I, for one, have dropped out of X-Wing as well. Scum did nothing for me as far as excitement, and I didn't even pick up the YT-2400 or the Decimator. I may go back and get those two big ships at some point, but I am not purchasing scum.

I also budget religiously and save up every penny of my "fun money" between major purchases. It is hard to resist a lot of low-level buying that uses up this monthly fund (thinking of LCGs here, which I also buy on occasion) but if I can save between big releases of the things I REALLY like I have a stockpile ready for the big MM or Coolstuff orders as needed. Before this I only was really into X-Wing and Warhammer: Diskwars (which is one of my favorite games of all time) as far as buying everything, but Armada is now firmly a part of that list.

My budgeting has worked so far, though Armada pushed me to the limit on the initial core and wave-1 buy-in. It will be totally worth it, though. This is the most excited I have been for a game since Warhammer: Diskwars was announced!

I fail to see the reasoning behind such rude comments. First off I never asked how can I budget, I asked if there was a way to stay current and play both. (In no way asking for people to give me budget help with my life) Then I asked if people were playing both or one or the other. (To see how many people were dropping out of X-Wing to go to Armada to judge the popularity of the game and decisions people were making.) If you are so offended by my post why are you commenting? Why do you keep coming back? The X-Wing community has been built on flying casual, but if this is how the Armada community will start out, as some elitist, "don't ask any questions unless you know the answer anyway," group then maybe Armada isn't for me, but I see that more people than not are giving honest answers.

The fact of the matter is getting on a post to be rude is not what this gaming group is all about, it's about being inclusive and teaching people. My post was harmless and hopefully gave information or ideas to other people who also viewed this post. I didn't even think about the the fact that there will be a long time between the initial core and the second wave. It's also interesting how many people aren't buying scum.

But thank you for making you're rude comments because they were so constructive on a thread that you could have just not bothered even reading.
