A Question About Ship Deployment in a Tournament

By frbfli, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Under Component Modifications on page 1, paragraph 6 of the X-Wing Standard Play Tournament Rules it states:

players may use their range ruler and maneuver templates to help them set up formations during deployment.

Does this mean that when I'm placing a ship I am allowed to place the 3-Hard Turn between the front two pegs in order to make sure that it is positioned correctly?

Thanks!

From the text in the Tournament rules, I'd say yes, you may.

Yes, that's how I would read it.

You could use templates to set your ships exactly as far apart as you want, or make sure an initial 3-bank/turn will put you next to (and not on) an asteroid. Although, in doing so, you'll be giving away information to your opponent about where you plan to send your ships.

I believe that part was added after some people were showing with a home-made template with slots for all of their ships so they could have the exact same setup every time.

Was it determined that custom templates were allowed?

Was it determined that custom templates were allowed?

No, they are not allowed.

What I meant to say was the section of rules was added to PREVENT people from bringing custom templates.

Ah, got it. I didnt think you could do that. Honestly, i wouldnt mind to ha e faster setup times.

Thank you for the quick replies!

I'm personally on the fence about using the templates to assist with my squad formation, but it's good to know that the option is there!

I'll be attending my first Store Championship in two weeks at a store I've never played at before (I did stop in last weekend to meet the owner), and I want to make sure I'm understanding all of the rules correctly. I realize that some people have issues with 'outsiders' playing at their store championships, so I want to make a good impression.

To be honest, the most I've seen people do when using templates to setup their ships is to either use the width of the range ruler or a movement template to space 2 ships and make sure they won't bump when banking together, or place ships using the 1 straight template in such a way that they can barrel roll into formation.

Good luck at your tournament! Hopefully they players at your store adopt the Fly Casual mantra and it's a pleasurable experience for you :)

And by "custom templates," they don't mean third-party acrylics. People were making cardboard and foamcore formation cutouts they were using to line up their TIE swarms precisely the way they wanted them.
