the OFFICIAL three player game, a break with convention.

By Gadge, in X-Wing

Really interesting to see 'mission 12-bounty hunt' actually being a three player game from FFG.

Not only have they moved on from 'a game for two players who each take a side in the GCW' but its now really cool to see a scenario specifically designed for three players.

A lot of us have always said you can do a three player game but to stop it being a wipe out for one player who is ganged up on or to stop a player not engaging until the end and mopping up the survivors .... well you need a scenario really.

And FFG have given us one.

seems that nothing is set in stone in this game which is healthy to see.

Are there any good scenarios in Mission Thing for 3 players that are any good?

Mission Thing?

I dont know of it.

Its just the first official thing i've seen FFG release to endorse three players in the IG2000 pack scenario. I thought it was an interesting departure from the two player format, i mean obviously people have been doing three player games for a while but it was nice to see FFG recognise this.

Oh you mean mission control? dunno, never look at that bit of the board.

I tend to make my own scenarios up.

Scenario is the only way to go, I agree... anytime you have first blood in the water in a 3 player game, it's no bueno because the first one who loses a ship is the wounded gazelle that gets eaten lol.

I think this scenario is clever because its really one big ship with minimal support each.

Han Solo in the MF, Boba Fett and IG88, all with around 40 points of support and everyone having a contrasting agenda.

edit: having just read the rules for the 'squad orders' i can see this being a lethal scenario...

options to treat all manouvres as green for a round, PS as 12 etc etc

I have no idea what you're talking about. But since I was planning on getting IG-2000 anyway, this gives me one more good reason! ;)

Basically the 'large ship mission' in the IG2000 is a three player game.

Care to tell more about it? Some of us are stuck in PROCESSING PRE-ORDER.

Yeah essentially its awesome from just reading it!

In detail.

Boba fett, HLC, determination and seismic charges, stealth and 48 squd points

Han, MF title, elusiveness and chewie crew + 47 points

IG88B, ion cannon, mangler cannon, acc corrector, seismic charges, hot shot blaster, 49 points extra

standard 6 rock field.

Set up is rebels on the top end of the square, middle third, scum bottom third of the right, imperials, bottom third of the left.

Standard 'kill all enemies onjective'

What makes it different is each named large ship 'wing commander' has three special 'order counters'

These can be assigned (one each) to the command ship or an ally.

they are:

Evasive action - increase theships AG by 1 until next round

Open Fire - treat the ships PS as 12

Stay frosty - all the ships manouvres count as green (even K turns!)

They are 'one off' orders and may not be used again once assigned and then discarded... so a powerful one off buff that could really tip the balance.

I still don't see how that scenario doesn't still turn into gang up on the weakest one. Seems like it would be fun with the special orders, but I was expecting a scenario that had some objectives besides free-for-all.

Yeah. They all seem to have the same goal.

What if you threw in the rule that Boba wins if he kills Han. Han wins if he kills IG-88, and IG-88 wins if he kills Boba. :P

Well i just think it was good that a 3 player official scenario works and the 'orders' let you really mess up with someone 'predictions'

this game plays great with 3+ players.

everything comes down to pilot order so you don't even have to make a new imitative system.

I've played this scenario a few times, and I can tell you that the additional abilities given to the Wing Commander really help prevent it from becoming a one on one followed by the third player mopping up.

The asteroid placement is also a bit different, which helps determine lanes of attack, and also the fact that once your wing commander is lost, all your ships are destroyed, makes it a fast paced battle, when it could otherwise take much longer than a standard game.

I highly recommend you try it out before assuming it is just like other three-way battles you may have tried before.

Most of all, it's really fun.

There are very subtle differences vs standard 100v100. There is a starting zone at the top middle, and one in each bottom corner. You can choose to do standard 100pt per player. If you do, each player elects 1 ship as their wing commander. If that ship dies, that player is out. To mix things up, each player has extra one time use tokens as Gadge described above. The token can be assigned to either the wing commander, or a friendly ship within 3 of the wing commander.

Asteroid placement is slightly different. No asteroid can be placed in a starting zone or within 1-2 of each other.

I can't wait to try this out.
