Modded HWK-290. Most capable starfighter?

By vivenvex, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Is there a limit to the number of linked weapons you can have? I want the "Hexa-Gun" (or Octo-Gun) to be a thing. :D

Nope, no limit. So make your hex or octo gun. I prefer a Linked 499 "Idiot's Array" myself.

Of course the Advantage cost limits are unchanged, so I'll be real impressed if even your players can get above linked 6 or 7 or any regular basis.

Begin Joke:

"Can I apply my Jury Rig talent to the Idiot's Array instead of my Heavy Blaster Rifle?"

End Joke:

...Sarcasm can be so hard on forums.

I particularly like the HWK freighters (the 1000 is in Fly Casual, which I playtested, yay) because they're fast enough for catch other ships without spending a HP on a tractor beam.

Yep. That's why it's almost a blessing to start with an unarmed ship. Anything you want (limited by Silhouette) in any configuration (single, double, triple, etc.) with any facing/mounting for only 1 hardpoint.

You could read that rule as well in the way that you need the weapons any pay one additional hard point for the link property, which would make it more constant with the weapon upgrades. Though the FAQ does not answer this directly, but seems to even add one hard-point cost when you upgrade from one linked laser weapon to another, so I doubt that they are looking for consistence there. :)

Still would be interesting to have a source of them saying that buying any kind of additional weapon cost 1 point, no matter if linked or not. 1 Hard Point for a Medium Laser-Cannon [Linked 3] and a proton launcher or auto-blaster instead of Light Laser cannons on A-Wing sounds almost too good in the Fire-Power department.

To be fair, Hard points can be spent on much more then weapons which is probably why linked doesn't add hard points. It's basically providing a conditional enhancement to a singular position for considerable expense and upon hitting a certain point extra money invested in linked becomes less useful.

My HWK-1000 isn't designed to be a battle ship with it's only defence being a quad turret, a fact that confounded most of the party. Instead I took smuggling compartments and Whisperthrust Engines from fly Casual, and a Luxury upgrade. It's primary used as a smuggling vessel for a Bounty Hunter ID I have on me, with it's fantastic speed stats primarily used as a runner when cornered. Hoping to get a secondary transponder eventually to finish the profile and give it a real sense of legitimacy while being able to run more openly. As said, that's largely because SIL 4 and 3 ships have different expectations; what makes the 290 a better dog fighter makes the 1000 a runner; because it's hopeless in a battle of heavy hitters.

For someone who loves ships so much you forgot something really important.

Sup?

And the best part, they do not take crew space, while they offer huge boosts to the ship. If you run them as PCs you actually get each turn out of the X-Wing 2 Pilot only Maneuvers, Pilot only Action, one Astromech Maneuver and two Astromech Actions.

One of the astromech maneuvers can be increase power action, giving the X-Wing Speed 6, in open space a decent Droid can max out the defense easily at 4 dice (Watch Your Back) and still has time to provide target locks and shoot most turns. In dangerous terrain the co-pilot and/or plot course action becomes super-helpful, but admittedly those actions can be taken organic crew members as well.

That astromech socket costs two hard points, so equipping a Hawk with one is hurting other potential upgrades, including weapons.

Don't get me wrong, having a small ship which offers the ability to add crew several stations is a great help in ships performance, but a dedicated astromech is worth almost two crewmen on his own and offers unique actions especially beneficial to fighter combat. And if you have to take npc astromechs than having one still beats having no crew at all by a few boost and/or defense dice. BTW is it me or are NPC mechs totally underwhelming compared to PC astromech droids?

*glances over at X-wing Miniatures Game*

*starts crying*

Oh if only we could be this creative with the ships in X-wing...

You can't put a quad laser turret on the hwk-290 because it's silhouette 3 (unless the dangerous covenantso rules allow you to sidestep that restriction)

Yup, the Oversized External Weapons Mount (page 60) allows you to mount weapons that are meant for a ship of one larger Silhouette, which means that the Quad Laser Cannon can be mounted. You spend 2HP, decrease Handling by 1, and reduce SS by 4.

And yes, that means that you can actually get a Turbolaser mounted on a Sil 4 ship! ;)

We use a Ghtroc 720 in our group, it's nicknamed the "flying turtle". Someone came in with one off Oggdudes sheets showing it fully modified - it's weapon system was now a retractable linked light turbolaser. On the dorsal surface flanking the cockpit.

He wanted to change it's name to Blastoise.

I think they are meant to be inferior by design because PC's are naturally the heroes/anti-heroes of the setting, the additional abilities granted by a PC astromech is to show greater capabilities of an individual then a off the line astromech that has yet to develop beyond it's core programming.

IMO, “Oversize External Weapons Mount” is inherently incompatible with the concept of “Retractable Linked Light Turbolaser”, or at least the “Retractable” part.

That is, unless your “Retractable Linked Light Turbolaser” makes you look like the Star Wars version of one of these:
