Figuring out obstructed attacks for parallel ships

By Tvboy, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So say you have two ships shooting at each other, their bases are parallel to each other so their front corners are equidistant apart. There's an asteroid between the two left corners, but no asteroid between the two right corners, do you count the shot as obstructed or not?

If anybody knows where this is explained in the rules please let me know, I can't seem to find anything.

I'm pretty sure it's in the FAQ somewhere.

The attacker gets to choose where to measure range if the ships are parallel. So, the shot wouldn't be obstructed.

Correct. It us in the FAQ, somewhere.

I personally think it a bit cheesy, but if you have two ships absolutely parallel and you can draw a perpendicular line of sight from one to the other without being obstructed, then it's unobstructed. I would prefer to use a peg-to-peg ruling in that situation as it seems fairer to me, but that's just my opinion.

It may have been an e-mail and it isn't covered in the current FAQ. I'll see if I can get an official response.

Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure it was an email response the last time this popped up.

This was in an earlier version of the FAQ, but for whatever reason it didn't make it into the new version.

When it was in the FAQ, in the parallel situation the attacker could select any line between the ships they wanted to.
