If everyone builds to counter the Decimator....

By Crabbok, in X-Wing

This coming weekend marks a new wave of Store Championships, where people will be able to use Scum stuff for the first time. Naturally I'm considering playing a scum list. One of the things I'm thinking about is :"What will people be flying?". People in Orlando tend to fly Decimators - ALOT. Like more than half of the people at any given tournament will have at least one Decimator on the table.

So I'd expect many people to try to counter those. I expect alot of Soontir Fels, and I expect a fair amount of Outriders with Mangler Canon.

So would it be wise to prepare to face Decimators as well? Or do you think you'll end up seeing not a single one?

Decimators + Whisper will still be a thing. There might even be more Patrol Leaders with Vader to counter Auto Fel.

Yeah, I'd expect to see more Decimators, especially with Vader, and maybe fewer YT-2400s and Falcons. Rebels will probably go a bit heavier into BBBBZ, or perhaps Ten Numb with Mangler backed by a Z-swarm or Warthogs.

Not sure what really hard-counters BBBBZ. I don't think it'd be Fel. Maybe a XXBZZZ, or a few heavy hitters with Predator?

People in my area play a lot of Decimators too.

Then I went to my first Store Championship and faced Fat Han the first 3 rounds, including a player that I had only ever seen flying the Decimator.

So yeah... I have no idea.

Super Dash counters that list pretty hard actually, if you fly smart. Although you still probably won't kill every ship if there's only 60 minutes.

I don't know if S&V has a natural counter for BBBBZ. Maybe Sycks with HLC? 4 Cartel Spacers with HLC come out to 92 pts.

And those 8 points buy you an upgrade to Sirissu with Swarm Tactics.

I wasn't planning on buying any Scyks until now...

I've been wanting to make it to an event and try out Doug Kinney's new Tie swarm strategy, and I'm thinking this might be the right time.

New Tie Swarm Strategy? What's that?

More than once I have forgotten that you're in FL as well. I'm likely heading to my first tournament game of X-Wing (Woo!) in Sarasota. The Dark Side is having their SC on March 7th.

people in orlando my ass. half of everyone who's playing this game is suckling the decimator teet this wave

you counter them the same way as every boring fat turret: dice per points. S&V has the Z-95 and title Y-wings to lend a lot of dice for their cost

THe only thing I don't like about s&v is the lack of stress mechanics. I've found stress pretty much shuts down or hinders every single wave 5 list that gets copy-pasted far past nausea, and will be quite detrimental to the new soontir.

People say 4x sigma phantom is too fragile, but 4-5 scyks with hlcs isn't really any less fragile. I suppose you have defensive howlrunner, but you don't get the sweet decloak in formation maneuver.

I think a TIE Swarm might be able to take on BBBBZ, but everyone in my area plays turrets so I haven't had to face it. I'm also of the opinion that adv. Sensors on all the b wings would be better than the Z wing. You're ALWAYS getting an action off, you're immune to asteroids and the negative effects of the red maneuvers. It opens up the dial a lot. I know there is that thing where the point totals lost for BBBBZ are good, but eh.

Xwings. Seriously. They tear apart Decimators.

and B-wings and Zs

and hopefully titled Y-wings

Xs are okay, until the green dice give out <_<

I'm 50% done with X-wing as it stands - I do not blame anyone or anything for the meta but I've just grown weary of it. Perhaps it will change after Store Championship season, but I didn't buy into this game to play the same, unimaginative 2 ship lists.

I came in 4th at a local SC last weekend - Capt. Oicunn and Col. Vessery. I felt ridiculous - there were so many creative non-meta lists and here I was, hamfisting my way through a tournament with only a minor variant of the uninspired meta BS.

I'm going to try the RPG inspired campaign at the weekly drop-in after SC season is done. FML I hope Scum inspires some variety.

That's perfectly understandable: when I was in central Florida, I tried very hard to forget that I lived there.

I really think this weekend is going to be a gloriously chaotic collision of Wave 5 metagame lists, Wave 5 anti-meta lists, and people maniacally inventing new S&V lists. I have no idea what I'm likely to face, which is both terrifying and really, really great.

You gotta go hole hog to do your part to dissuade this meta bull

The Stress Wing is my attempt to do this and it's been working well, but if you really ******* hate decimators you can't do better than BBBBZ

go forth and conquer!

I hear you - and BBBBZ won another local SC lat weekend. A Sorceress of X-wing!

I got into this game to fly ships I like - I get when you go to tournaments you gotta bring A lists - but casual drop-ins are now extremely meta heavy. I just want to fly the ships I like and show my pretty repaints off.

For all that I'm venting about 2 ship meta builds - I do enjoy not having to manage 4+ dials each turn. I'm bringing a 2 ship Scum list to a SC this Saturday in Mississauga that is obviously going to fail, hard, but at least Kath will get to show off her colours and Guri do a little Adv. Sensors dancing.

BBBBZ or XXXXZ (I discuss as an alternative in this post https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/136008-xxxxz-as-an-alternative-to-bbbbz/) are to me, at least, cool. If I get curb-stomped by a phalanx of assault starfighters, so be it. They look good, they were in the movies, and you can do some damage to them before succumbing to their bucket of red dice. You also can formulate a plan to try and lure them away from certain targets or into traps. It might not work, but you can try. It just feels more right than big ship with turret + ace.

For the next championship, I'll probably throw in 2 aggressors with ion cannons (with the one having a gunner effect). Add autothrusters to the mix and then gently escort that decimator out of the premisis :P

I'll have a blast whether that tactic works or not (although I will mentally giggle a lot if it does).

yeah it's been weird recently that all my counter Wave 5 lists are OT only :P

it wasn't at all intended, it just happened to be what worked well

The lists I've most used are Tie Fighter Swarm, Stress Luke + 2 Blues + Proto-type A-wing, and Soontir Fell Interceptor + double firespray

The only EU ships I've put on the table are Z-95s (stress wes, biggs, 3 bandits) and the ion Defender in casual games to prepare for Soontir with auto-thrusters :D

I hear you. I've always loved just flying a giant chaotic mess of Tie Fighters, and am hoping it'll be good again. The Interceptors are my other favorite ships, and it's going to be great to be able to really go all-in with Soontir and Carnor again. My favorite list was Howlrunner, 4 Academies, and Carnor, even if it didn't stand up to the Obsidian Swarm. I'm excited to bring that back, as well as Soontir, Carnor, and Echo. Things are going to get a lot more interesting.
