Imperial Assault skirmish compared to X-Wing

By VanorDM, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I know there's a IA forms and a Skirmish subforms... But I don't know that I'd get the kind of answers I'm looking for there, in fact I'm pretty sure I wouldn't.

So from the point of view of people who play X-Wing how doe the IA skirmish game stack up? I know that it's new and still doesn't have even a first wave out there.

But in general do you find it's as deep and have the same kind of replay that X-Wing does?

The reason I'm asking this here, is if I were to ask it there, I can say that the answer to "is this game fun?" would be Yes. Because it's not like a lot of people who don't like the game post there.

I don't think the two completely compare.

X-Wing is centered on the dogfight. Kill or be killed, last man standing wins. IA has skirmish missions that have different objectives and different ways of winning.

There's also the terrain and maps that are of consequence.

Haven't played it yet though, played a few missions though. I think you'll find there is plenty of replay potential to be had, especially because each upgrade pack brings another skirmish mission.

I'm due to have my first game of IA in a week's time, so I'll let you know, Vanor.

Cool thanks :)

I have to admit it looks really fun based on the youtube videos I've seen, or at least the campaign part does. But I wonder if the Skirmish part on those fairly small maps doesn't get a bit stale after a while.

A mate of mine has got it and he's keen to run a campaign, so that what we're doing.

Yeah that part alone almost looks like it's worth the price. But I'm looking at all the expansions which I admit the painter in me wants to get ahold of, and trying to decide if those are worth it or not, for play reasons.

The wave 1 range of expansions are already in the box, represented by tokens, the separate packs contain the miniatures, skirmish missions, side missions and all they need.

The campaign is great.

Yeah I saw that, the question is is the extra stuff worth it? Although at the price they're charging the expansions are pretty reasonable. I mean I paid $15 or so for a Space Marine Librarian in Terminator Armor. Now that was a metal mini and fairly large... But it didn't come with anything extra like the FFG stuff does.

But again my question is about how fun the Skirmish part of it is, compared to X-Wing. I'm still having a blast playing X-Wing 2 or so years later and wonder if Imp Assault would provide the same.

The issue is I'm looking at getting IA or Aramada, and want to figure out what's going to be the best bang for my buck.

But again my question is about how fun the Skirmish part of it is, compared to X-Wing.

Just want to clarify. You are specifically asking about the skirmish mode of the game, as opposed to the campaign, scenario based version. Right?

More or less yes. I've looked at the campaign mode stuff and it looks like it's really quite fun. But is it $188 fun? I based that number on the cost of the core set, and all the expansions. Which if I were to get it, I'd get everything.

I'm assuming that FFG is going to release more campaigns at some point, like they did for Descent.

But once you play though the campaign, and are waiting for a new one. Is the skirmish game going to keep me as engaged as X-Wing will? Will it do that as well as I assume Armada will?

You play through the campaign multiple times at least, there are ample side missions packed in the box, not everything will come up in one playthrough. And a campaign will play with a maximum of four of the six packed heroes, so you have some variance there as well. It will make a difference if you take the sniper or the commander for instance.

Won't Armada be more of the same too? You've already got one space combat simulator game in X-Wing, at least with IA you'll have a different experience because you're not playing two flight path systems.

All in all it's up to you, but my choice was for X-Wing and IA (it really helped that I could pick up IA at a 50% discount stunt)
