Ground forces expansion?

By ldodt, in X-Wing

Again, a separate game with similar rules systems and scales so that those fans who WANT X-Wings strafing At-Ats can combine them without too much difficulty.

There are simply too many extra factors to take into account with ground forces to make it an add on for a game that wasn't originally designed to accommodate them.

Just consider height, in x-wing elevation means little but in a ground game you cant have a ship just stop when it overlaps as it's much higher up and so would not suffer any negative effects from overlapping a ground vehicle.

If you're looking for a set of ground attack and atmospheric combat rules compatible with X-wing, check out the SWXW: Ground Assault rules here:

No Name Publishing SWXW Expansions

X wing is a space combat game...not a ground force assault game. This idea has been discussed in depth before...

It works better as a stand alone game...it shouldn't be shoehorned into an existing SPACE COMBAT game...

I hope FFG never makes a ground combat game compatible with X Wing.... I had too much fun making my own set of rules that work well enough for me!

There are many arguments for and against this idea.

I have said many times in various post on these forums that I think the answer lies in between the yes and the no.

I would argue that there is no place in this game for snow speeders, cloud cars, T-16s and the like. They just don't compare to X-Wings et al. in speed maneuverability, and fire power.

Having said that, I would welcome certain elements of ground based / atmospheric combat. For example, bombing run scenarios. FFG could release a Tie Bomber / ION Cannon pack or Y Wing / AT AT pack. Also a Battle of Yavin pack with Death Star turrets. All of these have a ground based element but it is more of a ground based turret kind of feel.

I would like to see FFG release a pack/ some packs of ground based targets in which to perform bombing runs against .. whilst being defended by the afore-mentioned ground based defenses.

I think it would breath more life into ordnance and offer a fresh new collection of scenarios in which to enjoy.

While I think a ground force in regards to the same scale as X-wing would bee cool. I don't think the flight path system would be the best. It would work for ground vehicles but for infantry you would have to make a whole set of maneuvers for them.

Now as for the templates below this would be the start for a "Battle for Hoth" scenario. The concept of different shaped bases would add more characteristics to vehicles like walkers from repulsors like T-47 air/snowspeeders.

I made this a while back:

This wouldbe an example of a dial:

I even did a template for rotating maneuvers

I would rather see a separate game, on some sorta hex-board. Would make movements a lot easier, for sure.

I'd have no objections to the addition of some terrain-like pieces

things like automated defense satellites - space stations - that kind of thing

in fact I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if that's what Alex Davy was hinting at when he talked about objective play in his recent interview. The next wave might not be ships at all!

but the game just doesn't scale to mixing ground units and air assaults

for that you probably want something like w.... waaa.....war...... no I just can't say it
