To upgrade or not to upgrade

By Vlad3theImpaler, in Star Wars: Armada

A lot of the upgrade we've seen look pretty cool, and there's definitely a temptation to load up your ships with as many as possible.

However, that can turn into a point sink, and anyone with experience with other miniature games knows what it's like to see a highly upgraded unit bite the dust in one good round of shooting.

It's possible to go to the complete opposite of the specturm and play with no upgrades at all. For example, I plan on trying this sometime:

Victory I 73 points

--Tarkin 35 points

Victory I 73 points

Gladiator I 56 points

TIE Fighter x5 40 points

TIE Interceptor x2 22 points

That's 3 ships with a lot of firepower, espeically at close range, and a respectable 7 fighters for support.

It obviously lacks the nifty tricks that many of the upgrades provide, but will the firepower of having 3 star destroyers be enough to make up the difference?

Do you think that extreme builds like this, or ones with ships completely tricked out with upgrades will be viable, or will a middle ground approach be necessary?

I'm in this no upgrade race with you. I always run light on the upgrades and haven't had any issues yet.

It is tempting to use lots of upgrades as there are some very nice looking ones. I'll be taking the approach of deciding what role I want each ship to perform and assigning a minimum of upgrades to help it fulfill that role.

For example, if I have a fighter heavy fleet, I'll want some squadron support. So I'd either take a Neb B Escort Frigate with the Yavaris title for it and/or Adar Tallon for a more offensive approach. Or I might take an AF2 B instead for the same role with the Gallant Haven title to give the fighters some survivability.

I'd say figure out what the most effect upgrades for your strategy will be and use those.

Me thinks there's a limit on how many squadron points you may bring to the board

Aye... no more than 100 points from what I've seen. As far as a limit on upgrade points you would know better than anyone Forensicus...

I am not acting coy or withholding info: I did play the one game but was very occupied by just grasping the learn to play scenario and just had little time (and energy at 1AM) to briefly leaf through the Damage Deck, Upgrades etc. however as soon as I get my little greasy fingers on the precious cargo ahead of my demo game I will let ya'll know more details
