Learning from mistakes...or "won the battle, lost the war"

By LukesFather, in X-Wing

Had our Store Champs yesterday and it was 3 rounds then a cut to top 4. In game 2 played a build I just pretty much played on the first game as out of the 15 players there, there was only 6 builds that were small base only(including mine), the rest had at least one big ship if not 2. So played vs chewy/leebo for a second game in a row, and had a great first round of fire where all my ships where just rolling solid hits on every roll, so 10-12 hits on the first exchange, his Defense was solid but shields were being taken off.

the round following I misplaced dials on 2 ships. It is a rookie mistake, but I am not rookie, I almost always double check my dials, and didn't, and it cost me a final 4. As instead of a blocker and 4 range one shots on chewy(which had lando in it, would most likely have ad 10-14 hits to it with good rolls, I had 2 ships totally out of position and only 2 solid shots on him. And to boot, Leebo started sniping the ships so the Talas dropped in each round following. I did win the match with Luke, BUT the guy I beat, it as his only lose, and if I would have kept just one more ship on I would have beat his total points. I ended 5th. Luckily for me the TO had already won a store champ and gave out the other focus pack to me.

Morel of the story - CHECK YOUR DIALS, AND CHECK THEM OFTEN.

Any other stories of knowing the exact second you lost it all on a move on a game you won, but ultimately lost?

At the end of a recent game.

I roll in with a 100% fresh Echo, vs Focused Krassis, Range 1, 1mm from being out of arc.

Krassis has 3 hull left.

I roll 5 dice, get 2 hits, he rolls two evades.

I trigger gunner. I roll Hit, Hit, Crit, blank, blank and he rolls two evades..

He pulls a Direct Hit, Ah-ha!

(then I forget to cloak)

He attacks Echo, and rolls 4 dice, eye, eye, hit, eye.

Spends the focus.

I roll blanks.

Leaving me with a 3 Hull Kenkirk, against an 8 Hull Oicunn and a 1 hull Krassis.

I find a couple things interesting in this story. First the TO was playing in it and made the top cut. I know the rules say it is OK for the TO to play in the Store Championships but I personally feel this should not happen. The reason being there is an extra set of tokens in the kit to reward the TO for their effort. They should have included a rule for the SC Kits that if the TO plays in the event this extra set should be given as a door prize to illuminate the chance of the TO doubling up on tokens.

Mistakes happen all the time while playing X-Wing. This is an example where a mistake was made and you paid the price for it. Because there was a consequence for your mistake this will very likely never happen again as you've learned with a scar. This is how you become a better player. The next time you forget an action or misplace a dial be the better player and live with your mistakes even if the other player tells you to fix it. If your mistakes comes with no consequence you will never learn.

The TO was NOT playing in the games, the TO had won a prior store champ and was being a TO only. I am sorry if that was confusing. He gave the TO set of tokens out as another prize and didn't pocket them, as he could have, as TOs get the 5th set.

it was the double Hawks flying around, threw everyone off their game. ;)

I was in the Final Four round vs. Tie Phantoms. It was late in the game and I had him down to 2 Phantoms, one with only 1 hp left. I flipped my dial and was about to move, when I realized I had a bomb and could drop it. I announced it. He told me that I had to announce before I flipped. I was looking at a defeat and just took it at face value. It wasn't until afterwards that I realized that I flip the dial and then announce. I should've been able to drop my bomb and would've killed one. I most likely would've lost after that, as my last 2 Bombers were almost dead and 5 min left on the clock. Still, I let someone tell me that I couldn't do something and didn't check it.

i'm super confused how you triggered gunner after landing two hits

Maybe that was his "won the battle, but lost the war" moment

Should have been 5 dice, 2 hits of course!

no no no, if you landed 2 of those 4 hits then gunner cant trigger. gunner only works if you landed zero hits.

I was pretty sure Gunner just cares of you miss with an attack, as in you attack and either roll no hits or crits or the defender rolls enough evade results to cancel all hits and crits. Since when did gunner change it's text to "if you roll no hit or crit results"?

thats exactly how gunner works. he says he rolled 4 hits, and that the defender rolled 2 evades. that means 2 hits landed, and he couldnt have used gunner.

rolling hits and landing hits are very different things.

Didn't notice that, thanks.

I would guess he just miss typed it. He says krassis had 3 hull left, then he shot, then gunner triggered, got a double damage crit and krassis had one hull.

Reading this I also see the problem. "I roll 4 hits, he rolls 2 evades" means there should be 2 uncancelled attack dice preventing Gunner from being triggered. I'm guessing it should have said "I roll 2 hits, he rolls 2 evades" which would then allow Gunner to trigger.
