New Players in a Three Faction World

By Stone37, in X-Wing

I'm pleased to see some honest discussion going on about the once holly "everyone should have two Core" doctrine. The game has changed so much in just the last year that this is quickly becoming untrue. Even for those playing in tournaments, 1 Core gets you in the door and your money is better spent else where. The second Core makes way better sense for the Imperial leaning player, thanks to those two ties, but not as much for the Rebels.

The Core, as it is today, is still a great deal and a complete game in and of itself. I doubt FFG will replace it. It keeps the price point down and "mistakes were made" can't happen if the initial price is too high.

Even though I said a 2nd core isn't needed, I don't think it's for the most part untrue. A second core is a great value and an almost must buy if any of the following are true.

  • You will be playing both Rebels and Imperials (If you'll be playing one of those two and S&V perhaps not).
  • You will be providing stuff for other players.
  • You will be playing Imperials.

Most people play both Imp's and Reb's so for most people getting a 2nd core set is still a great value, because they can use both the X-Wing and the two Ties'.

I play both sides as well, but don't play with Ties all that often. (I do own 4 of them though.) For me, it never made fiscal sense to buy the second Core. I don't argue there is not great value in it though. I do argue that it is a must buy.

I don't think it's a must buy either, just it makes the most sense, or at least it did upto wave 3 or 4 anyway. You simply couldn't get the ships you needed anyway else for as cheaply as you could with a 2nd core set.

But now with wave 6 soon to be here and all, I don't think it's as much of a no brainer as it was.

All Imperial players need to buy at least 1 Shuttle for the crew and system cards that come with it, if not for the ship itself.

Rebel Captive and Darth Vader are solid enough cards that I think every player needs a copy, and should be suggested by all!

For tournament play, I can't argue with that logic. For friendly play, I think there is more bang for your buck elsewhere. I'd suggest the Firespray and the Decimator before the Shuttle.

I don't know, the Shuttle is a **** powerful ship with a very polarizing play-style (incredibly points-stat efficient, nearly action independent with the proper upgrades, worst dial in the game)

If you're going for a competitive list on the cheap, the Shuttle could well end up playing a critical role in those lists

I also find it a fair bit easier to build lists around because it's so much cheaper. I love the bounty-hunter to death, but I can't run any less than 2 any more because they just work so well together (and with Soontir ^_^ or another bounty :P )

The shuttle is one heck of a bargain. You just have to deal with its weaknesses. Some of the new cards coming out have me looking at the shuttle again to as a cheap big ship with huge damage possibilities.

Indeedly-deed!

I wonder which new cards have you taking another gander at the shuttle?

I personally don't think I would ever be swayed from the Doom or Buzzsaw variants :)

(also, for anyone conflicted about the 2 core sets or the dice expansion, I've found that the FFG star-wars dice app makes a perfectly good compromise :))

(it also forces me to ***** less about my dice because, hey, this **** is digital and as unbiased as it could possibly be)

You'll pardon me if I'm going to be sneaky here for a bit. My store championship is about to come up, and I'm keeping my cards close to my chest.

I will say that there are many new combinations that the shuttle and the Aggressor can uniquely fly.

I will remain in suspense until after your resounding successes, sir! :D

Rebels can make a solid list with the Falcon, Rebel Aces and 2 A-Wings.

Imperials are tougher, but Imperial Aces, Slave I, the Lambda and the Phantom are all good buys.

Building a really good tournament list will inevitably involve some cross-faction purchases, but it won't be astronomical. Some people do things like buy 4 Firesprays or 3 Falcons and complain how expensive the game is. The key is to pace yourself and make staggered purchases and not try to have everything at once.

stone37 giff us your lists, giff us your secrets.

OT, if a player is going for a specific build that he liked to play from watching and borrowing stuff it is even easier.

Core set
Imperial Aces
Interceptor
Phantom

Was alll i needed for the first 4 months of my playing the game.
