I love x-wing, but I think I may just pass on the S&V ships.

By Hrathen, in X-Wing

I love X-wing, it has to be my all time favorite game. I have bought every expansion as soon as I could. Usually it ewas the day it was available at my LGS, there were a few ships I had to wait to get some more money, but they were the exception. That bing said, I might just skip getting the new S&V ships.

First of all I have so many ships. I love playing the Empire, but I also like the Rebellion. I don't have quiite the same love for S&V. I am not super excited about any of the ships. Yes, some of them are going to be really good ships, but they just don't excite me.

The other problem with S&V is that it is whole new faction. If I want to play with any of these ships, I pretty much need to have enough S&V ships to make up my whole list. Yes, I do have Y-Wings, Firesprays, and Z-95s already, but even to play with these ships you still need to shell out some money. So just getting into S&V feel like a lot more of an investment than taking advantage of the other waves was. This might not be as big of a problem, but I am planning on shelling out a lot of money when Armada comes out. Also I have been really enjoying D&D Attack Wing. Oh and I am super spyched about the new imperial epich ship.

I find myself thinking more about the new Mangler Cannon and Auto Thrusters upgrades rather than any actual ships.

I get it that for some of you, the criminal underworld is the most interesting part of the Star Wars Univers, but for me the fringe just isn't as interesting as the forces of the Empire and the Aliance. I am even okay with the fact that in the Star Wars Universe the forces of S&V which at best could be called a paramilitary force, at worst are nothing more than space thugs have equipmentt that can rival full on militaries. S&V is a legitamate part of the Star Wars Universe. I just don't think I will be investing in it any time soon.

Hell, just pick up two IG2000s and your good to go for some fun scum flying. But hey, if the ships don't excite you, that's not a problem. There are still so many awesome lists to run with the other two factions you should be fine for a good long time, and it's not like their stopping with new stuff for them. Fly on :)

As far as aesthetics go, the only decent-looking Scum ship is the Y-Wing repaint (and original Firespray). All of the new ones, especially the Starviper, look like ass. But they have a lot of fun tricks and trappings that look to be interesting. Otherwise, I'd be right there with ya.

With the ever increasing amount of waves and expansions, finance becomes an issue eventually. Buy what you like, fly what you like! :-) even without every single expansion this game has a lot to offer. I find myself making selections since wave 2. Finance, A wing hatred, and expectations of a new wave which presents me with a choice all play their part :-)

I still can't believe this is a post that was made, and I've been looking at it for 5 minutes.

While I am buying a ton of Scum ships, the truth is, the first, and ONLY ship I am buying (before March 1 payday) is the StarViper. The reason is that on the 28th there is a local store championship and I want Autothrusters in my squad. I have been proxying them with Soonter Fel and LOVE IT.

No love for the Black Sun Soldier?

I'm the crazy guy who is obliged to state "the starviper is one of the most beautiful starship designs I've ever seen. I'm getting 4 of them."

I totally get that. I never got to dive into the EU so I don't know about Xizor or the Black Sun or whatever. But I like IG-88, even though I know little about him. And while I may not know the pilots or factions, it's still a great game and I look forward to the mew playstyle

increasing numbers of ships and expansions means financing is more of an issue for a new player buying into the hobby, than someone continuing to support it, It's not unlike a recurring subscription for a game, My financial situation may dictate the pace of acquiring everything I want but averaged over the 3 months or so between new content releases it isn't too hard to get all I want (OK not all I want but all I can reasonably expect to need or use)

For the new players however that paywall just gets bigger and bigger, which is why it makes sense for new factions to be periodically introduced, a new player can choose to buy in to just one faction. The scum expansion isn't adding to that wall in the same way that say wave 4 added to it.

What's really funny for me is that when I played Star Wars Galaxies, I didn't want to take sides because I liked aspects of both sides, so I became a Neutral pilot instead. However, despite nearly maxing it out, I eventually had to switch to Rebel because I couldn't stand flying all of the Neutral ships I had no familiarity with (and my favorite Imperial ships weren't in the game). However, thanks to that experience, I now can't wait to get ships like the Scyk in X-Wing.

I kind of like the Scyk Interceptor and I'm looking forward to putting a couple of them down with the Firespray. The rest of S&V I've got no real care for though, so depending on what else comes out it may sit at a 60 point force for quick games. I'm okay with that.

The cost isn't so bad if you're adding one or two ships a month and don't mind growing each faction slowly. But hey, if the S&V ships don't do it for you, that leaves more cash for Imperials, Rebels, Armada, Assault; FFG will find a way to get your money :D

I'm going to take this as anecdotal evidence that Armada and licensing to Wizkids was a mistake by FFG. I know a lot of people that would be playing X-Wing if Star Trek attack wing didn't exist.

OP, if it makes you feel better, the only scum ships I'm going to buy are the Starviper and Scyk, and only for the upgrades. I'll probably sell the rest of the stuff.

Same here, I am all about Rebels vs. Imperium - no real need for a 3rd faction for me.

And I am also not a big fan of the Most Wanted pack as it contains 3 ships that are more or less boring to fly. Zees and Y-Wings dials are lame and no special moves on the action bar. Filler ships...

BUT we get two new highly manoeuvrable ships with a bag full of tricks. By just getting two Starvipers and an IG-2000, you can have a lot of fun flying around and get a lot of cool cards.

I'm in ;-)

There's a famous quote about opinions, and how their widespread presence is linked to a certain vital body part...

I ran some tests and it turns out according to science you have terrible taste :P

The Star Viper looks fantastic! The Aggressor on the other hand... [throwing up face]

I think it bothers me a little that there is not a cohesive theme for S&V. I see M3-As, HWK-290s and Y-wings as visually compatible, and StarVipers, Z-95s and Aggressors as compatible with Firesprays on their own. I know that this is the whole point of S&V (mismatched ships, unlikely allies) but it's a little jarring to see.

When playing Empire at War: Forces of Corruption I thought the StarViper should have been a hero unit, with Z-95s or T-wings becoming the primary fighter. Skiprays are perfect for S&V too.

I don't think anyone has to defend their desicion why they won't buy any S&V. When we only had Imps and Rebels some people only bought stuff from one side and this is quite frankly the same thing.

dude no one told u to buy it fly what u like and hey i love Empire the most but look at my signature ;P u will see scum aswell in it cause i want to try em out ^^ but i will always be the Imperial Man at our Flagship store ;P

"Lowly criminal scum does not concern me, chase them away - open fire"

That's cool. You play your game, I'll play mine. As long as we're both having fun.

The star viper does indeed look, er, like a ship from a different franchise.

Frankly it looks like a Vorlon ship (sort of).

I have two, one I shall leave as is and one I shall "fix".

I think for starters I might fold the wings back. That would help.

I have to admit that I started off in the same camp. I really didn't need to get a 3rd Faction. It was just too much. I like Epic play and have a great time with the originals. I don't really need another. There were three things that changed my mind, though.

1) I realized that Most Wanted is only $25 (at least online) and I have enough ships for a full list. I already have some Y-wings, HWKS, Z-95's, and a Firespray. I don't care about the dials being different and neither do my friends. If I just get that one expansion, I can get into that faction. It won't be too much and will be nice for a change of pace.

2) Xmas came and I ended up getting some gift certificates for Min. Market. I also got some cash, too. I had money to spend.

3) They released the info about the Scyk. For one, I love the idea of the cannons. I want them for everything. I'm one of those guys that has a hard time spending all those points for HLC's. It's just a lot to spend on one upgrade. Then, I started to look at the Scyk. I started with lots of Tie Fighters and find them very versatile. I almost feel like people forgot how to play them after Interceptors came out. The Scyk seems so much cooler to me than a Z-95. I want to try them out.

So....I went ahead and ordered:

Most Wanted

3 Scyks

2 Starvipers

1 IG-88

I also got lucky and did a focus group for some spare cash and it gave me enough to pre-order the Imperial Raider.

Now, I have to admit that I'm really psyched about getting my S&V ships. I've got a couple of ideas and can't wait.

Possibly, you were drawn to this game because it was Star Wars. I look at S&V and it isn't the Star Wars I love.

It is all EU. I have read my share of EU over the past 20 years and a lot of it doesn't fit my concept of the Star Wars universe. I think I understand you OP.

I'm a cynical old purest though. I love the Original Trilogy, hated the prequels but find myself excited for 7, 8 and 9.

Yes, I do have Y-Wings, Firesprays, and Z-95s already, but even to play with these ships you still need to shell out some money.

That seems like something of a no brainer. How else would you get the pilot cards?
