to those who think ordnance is useless

Question: Does anyone find value in taking Munitions Failsafe with their Ordnance?

Reason for asking the question: I recently got caught up with the expansions (only missing the Lambda, Bomber, Rebel Aces and all the Huge Ships) and I have been more inclined to start running lists with Ordnance now that I have some copies of Munitions Failsafe.

Except maybe with the Flechette torpedoes that give a stress even if it misses, I don't really consider munition failsafe when taking ordnance.

It might have to do with the fact that when I do take ordnance, I try to build accordingly and fire them with modifiers to help my rolls (Jonus, Missiles that keep their TL/Focus, double actions, etc) so that I won't miss with them. It can still happen of course, but I'm an optimist that believe everything always go according to plan............... until the son of my apprentice and his friends come in and prove me wrong...... <_<

I pretty much agree with Red Castle. I try not to fire off expensive ordnance unless I'm fairly certain of a hit or two. But at 1pnt I still think they're worth it.

Also, there's the Phantom to consider. Ordnance is good because it tends to rolls a lot of red dice. However, sometimes that will be defeated by lots of green dice, such as what the Phantom rolls. But once you get to the squishy middle, then it's great.

And, yes, Flechettes are great with Munitions Failsafe.

If I'm flying multiple Bombers with multiple ordnances, then yes, I will take Munitions Failsafe. A caveat to that, however - this is assuming I cannot use that/those point(s) elsewhere on my "main" ship.

I do pay attention to the tournament aspect of things (and don't know that I would use MF in a tournament list as those points could be useful elsewhere), but most of the time we play and fly casual at home, so I will definitely use MF then to reshoot ordnance and eff up my good friends. :D

Playing 150 points against wife last night

Fat Dash has 2 shield left. Delta squadron Pilot shoots off some cluster missiles. First shot 2 hits and 1 crit. I roll 1 evade. I'm thinking he's fine. Second roll, 3 cries, come on...no evade. That's fine, not dead...2 direct hit criticals...KABOOM

I was agahst, wife was cackling, manically...

Lucky man, your wife likes to play x-wing!!!

Lucky man, your wife likes to play x-wing!!!

Somehow, in the grand scheme of things, we all missed this.

Indeed, Fuego, indeed.

I quote from the wife when we were pickering our squads.

"here's my list"

Me "darling, I only have 1 E-Wing, not 2"

Her "well, best you buy some more then"

"Yes Ma'am"

2 hours later, picking squads for game 2

"Darling, I don't own 2 defenders, only 1"

An eyebrow is raised in my direction

"Yes ma'am"

Playing 150 points against wife last night-

Annnndddddddd you lost whatever point you were trying to make :P

Ordinance is quite hilarious at higher point levels, this is common thought. It's at the base game level where it's far too expensive and clunky to justify its existence.

Unless it was just a fun post about your wife demolishing you with a giant explosion (Typical day), then kudos to her and may her missiles be ever blessed with crit rolls (or just pack as many points worth of tempest squadron Advances with AC and cluster missiles as possible)

Did he lose his point because he lost to his wife or because he played 150 points XD?

I agree completely with this thread, ordnance are all rubbish except for Cluster Missiles, Proton Rockets, Assault Missiles, Flechette Torpedoes, Ion Pulse Missiles, Proximity Mines and the others.

I don't; I dunno if the maths back me up but given how expensive ordnance is I don't like to fire it unless I can modify the results, which means it very rarely misses completely.

I can't really believe we are still discussing this. The only ordnance i see regularly used in competitive lists are Flechettes, and sometimes ion missiles. Because they are cheap and produce a foreseeable result. You can of course play a lot of ordnance on 100 points and win, but generally spoken it's clunky to use, expensive and terribly unreliable. So that's why if you want to construct a list that can reliably win, you don't consider ordnance.

I played a Store Champ this past weekend and I took a 4 Tie Bomber list loaded with ordnance and bombs. I was the only undefeated person there at the end of the 4th round. I got wiped in the sudden elimination round vs. 3 Phantoms, though.

I used "My Name is Jonus" list, which helps with the ordnance. It's a great alpha strike to just cripple the important ships. I took out a Keyan Farlander on the first turn of shooting. I was able to plaster an Outrider, as well. Without Jonus, though, it's real....hit or miss.

If you are going without Jonus (or something like that) then I recommend taking Concussion Missiles. They turn blanks to hits and are the best way to verify some hits. Other than that, you can have other people that give out actions of one type or another also helps. Squad Leader or maybe Fleet Commander. Harder to do, though. I have used Vader w/ Squad Leader and a Tie Bomber on the flanks to good effect to hit the same guy in the first round. If he's not dead, he's usually crippled and the Academies can pick him off.

Pickering - a portmanteau of Pick and Bicker

possibly the most appropriate word ever for the shenannigans that go on between 2 loving x-wing life-partners when it comes to sharing out the ships and upgrade cards for list building.

I think initially ordnance got a bad rap because the main ships that could actually take them (X-Wings, Y-Wings) didn't have particularly good synergy with them or pilots that could really benefit from them.

Missles of some sort have always been pretty useful on the Advanced, but the Advanced doesn't get much love either, so that was a bit of a wash too.

Then Wave 2 came along and the A-Wing could roll them, but the A-Wing didn't get a ton of love outside of Tycho, and Tycho is usually rolled in a way that's expensive enough without missiles.

They have their place, but that place is fairly specific, and that place is also not overly popular in the meta, so most folks assume they suck.

... not to shake up the oh so precious Meta deity that everyone on here seems to worship.

:o

He blasphemed against the Meta deity!

Clasp him in irons.

Start up the interrogation droid.

Instruct it to 'encourage' Funk Fu master into seeing the light, recanting his blaspheme, and returning to the faith.

I guess he didn't expect the Meta Inquisition

Nobody expects that!
