First game, REALLY fun and learned a lot

By Forensicus, in Star Wars: Armada

Seems like navigate commands are pretty critical for the VSD to keep things in arc.

Yes indeed. And from memory I don't think it may equip the Nav Team (which allows you to change any command dial (before you reveal it) to a Nav or Repair command)

I'm still available for questions if anyone has something. I will still have access to the game at least until Saturday after which I'll be handing it back to the distributor :-(

Can the assault frigate take a nav team? It seems pretty strong if it allows you to ignore the command stack partially.

(More to the point, what's the symbol of it, then we can see if gladiators or assault frigates can use them, really appreciate the spoiling too :) )

Wanted to say thanks for posting demos and answering questions!

EDIT: English in the demos would be nice... (or German :) :) )

Don't think he can spoil this as the Assualt Frigate is wave 1 and he just has the core.

Aber Danish ist nicht so schwer. mindestens sprachen wir als ziemlich schön und wir haben nicht Jar-Jar überhaupt erwähnen

I can't say anything about the Assault Frigate. I only have the Core set and no further inside knowledge

All the symbols are here: https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/135517-first-game-really-fun-and-learned-a-lot/?p=1488547

Nav Team is a Support Team

Thx for all the interest. It's been a delight to share my experience with you. I hope some of you will share YOUR first game experiences in here too.

Things are finally happening for real, and even with a Wave 2 announcement to top it all off

For anyone that has demoed or played the game, how steep is the learning curve? I mainly play X-Wing with my 8 year old son and he does extremely well with all the mechanics in x-wing. Sometimes he forgets to perform actions after moving, but I'm pretty lenient with him on that. Is this something that you think someone that has a pretty good grasp on X-Wing could pick up and play? From everything I've read it sounds like it takes a lot more forward thinking and planning, which... He could definitely use some work on since asteroids sometimes are his demise, but in general? This is something he would love, he loves the larger ships and I was hoping it would be too ridiculous so it's something I can get into with him.

Any insight would be appreciated! :)

I'd say it might be quite the mouthful for a kid. However, just like X-Wing he'd proba or likely be able to enjoy it if just played casually.

When I demoed the game last Saturdy a couple of 10-12 year olds tried it but it seemed a bit difficult to keep them focused. So possible, but not exactly "suitable" IMO

I think x-wing is more fitting for 10-12 year olds. Not that it's a kids game, just simpler for kids to pick up.

This is what I figured. It sounds mechanics wise there's more to take into account before making your turn. He does really well in X-wing and has smoked me a few times. He's extremely good at flying and who to attack, upgrades are just lost to him. He forget about them, which I can understand. It can be a LOT to take in when you have 5-6 ships at time. And other than flying into asteroids while trying to out-flank me those seem to not be too big of an issue.

I may grab the core set and just see how he does. I really don't have any one else to play with casually. My girlfriend thinks it's ridiculous and couldn't even get through 30 minutes of a Star Wars movie, but him and I thoroughly enjoy it. My X-Wing fleet went from the Core Set to 25 ships within the matter of two months because we got pretty heavy into it. I can't justify spending a crap ton on another game when we both enjoy X-Wing as much, but I thought maybe it would be something to play around with. He keeps begging me to find a Star Destroyer to play with. I bought the GR-75 and he about crapped himself having the giant ship to play with. So I'm sure the CR-90 is in my near future.

Thanks for your insight. I really appreciate it!

And him being 8 I would agree, there's a bit lost there because it is a lot to take on at once, and he is young. He can make it through 90 minute sessions without losing interest though. After another year or so I think he will be pretty phenomenal. I think it's easier for them to grasp or stay interested because of the dynamics and you physically have something to move the act of rolling dice and then the challenge of strategy involved. I originally grabbed it because of my love for the SWU. I'm a bit of a junkie when it comes to that. This is my first mini game ever and so far it's been an extremely enjoyable success for us.

Yeah x-wing is a great gateway game into more complicated games. Welcome to the world of hardcore gaming!

Even for an adult it can get pretty gutting/gruesome twitch your fleet get annihilated inArmada due to a single wrong maneuver ;-)

And the +14 age they put on the box/description is fair, with exceptions. So give it a year or so more with X-Wings or try Armada with him in small doses and see how it goes

Best of luck

As a teacher in training it really is amazing the variation in kids, not just in mental processing, but also personality and focus and interests too.

If your son is able to focus on X-wing for 90 minutes because it interests him, that's a great sign for Armada. You mentioned it's hard when you get several ships to remember them all, so perhaps Armada with its fewer capital ships will be better in this way? You could look at doing smaller 180 point battles (core set size) rather than the full 300 points. Because commands are planned in their own "phase" and you have to think upto 3 turns ahead it might be easier for your son to remember to do them in the phase, but also help with cognitive thinking around prediction, which is something that kids will naturally develop over time, just some faster the others.

Personally I think the epic ships in X-wing are a flop, but Armada is looking very promising in learning from those mistakes. I wouldn't be surprised if the Imperal Raider is the last huge ship for x-wing.

Whatever you decide to do, I am sure your son will have lots of fun with either :)

Maybe a conversation for another thread, but I agree with you. When we sit down to play, very rarely is there any desire to introduce the huge ships. I don't know, maybe that will change when there is the possibility to have a Raider on the table to compliment the CR-90. It is likely a lack of understanding from not using them often, but they just feel clunky in our dogfights. The transport sees some use as an obstacle though... I don't know - I want to be interested in epic, but it just hasn't happened for me. Really, FFG may have lost me entirely on X-wing epic upon Armada's announcement, because it will scratch the itch that X-wing cannot.

The epic ships aren't exactly what I had expected as well. He loves using it, but the two times that he has, it turns into more of a bulldozer than anything else. It has made an excellent obstacle and more of a cinematic play rather than Epic. It being the only Huge ship we have it just gets picked apart by Defender and Bombers and then he gets bummed. After talking it out a bit, I think I will grab the Core Set see how it goes.

Thanks guys!

Forensicus, any chance you can give us a measurement for the diameter of the squadron bases?

JUST shy of 2,4 cm in diameter

I may have missed this, but could I get measurements as accurately as possible for the length of the ships you have? Measurements in mm is fine and even preferred.
