have we heard if FFG is cracking down on stores that bought the store championship kits but aren't hosting one?

You won't hear anything until you see if they get a kit next year. That's really the only cracking down you can expect.
thought there might be some people who had experienced this...wasn't there a topic a month or so ago?
I know last year, there was a kit on ebay during the SC season, and I believe FFG got involved and banned that store from participating in future championships.

would this affect any other FFG events they run? I.e. would they still be able to run other FFG championship or leagues?
I doubt FFG would have a public shaming of stores because the stores still sell product and don't want people to not buy their products from a store even if the store doesn't host a store champs. they'll just not let them host next year.

I don't know specifically, but one can assume that store would be on the FFG naughty list
I know in other cases they or someone seems to be cracking down
Our local store in Canada was informed that only one distributor is the only one selling ffg products.
He got a warning from either the distributor or ffg (I forget which) when he told them he had ordered xwing stuff fr the US so he could have stock on his shelves since lion rampant (the distributor) didn't have anything in for the longest time
Also he received an email now that he (and I guess it goes for everyone)has to sell the products at a set price, where before his prices were lower than other places.
Though little off topic, the point I'm saying is, is that there is someone out there who does care how business does things
Sounds like someone in the hierarchy for Canada is taking their cues from the GW school of business.
That only thing I have seen in the Seattle area is store limiting player space to less than the 32 the kit allows for. One store only did 12 players. I get space was issue. Don't misunderstand me. But we need to get the stores to get and allow for maximum participation in these events to grow our community.

There was a store that had a 16 player max with a hard stop at 6pm because they closed early that day. So it was only 4 swiss rounds with 16 players.
16 players and 4 rounds of swiss = 1 undefeated player
Edited by comawhite16 players and 4 rounds of swiss = 1 undefeated player
Event rules for SCs mandate a certain number of rounds and Top Cut at different attendance levels.
I interviewed a Trade Supplier at Glasgow Comicon about this and similar things last year.
Q. How do you feel about bricks and mortar stores selling store tournament kits on Ebay?
A. If it looks like the attendance to the tournament might be very low and the FLGS may lose money we have no objection to them splitting up the kit and selling it.
Q. How do you feel about FLGS selling off excess kit items? Eg: Lets say 8 players turn up at a store event and the TO dishes out the minimum required prizes and then sells the rest privately or on Ebay.
A. Again kits can be quite expensive and FLGS need to recoup this money so we have no objections to them selling off excess items to recoup / make some extra money as I believe the priority should be in supporting the FLGS and helping them remain in business in order to support Xwing and other such games.
I have to be honest and say I couldn't really pick fault with anything the Rep said. Ive been to tournaments where only 6 or 8 people have showed up which could have meant the shop taking a hit.

That sucks, I hope it's not becoming a widespread policy. The occasional $1-2 dollar discount is the only thing compelling me to occasionally make a purchase from a brick and mortar store, instead of just ordering online for the bigger discount.

my question is if a store gets a kit and DOESN'T run an event. There has been no store championship announced by the store but they have a kit.
Well some kits are only 20 so if only 4 people show that is enough to cover the cost.
My issues is I've seen the previous winter kit on ebay and the seller asking 95 dollars.
We know the kits do not cost this much
@ Krynn007
Where are you getting those crazy figures?
Lets say kit costs £20 and 4 people pay £5 = £20.
Its still not covered by a long shot.
What about staff, energy, etc etc..
You cant just say "The shop would have been open anyway" either as a lot of regulars who do not play xwing may not attend if an event is being run.
this conversation has moved away form the topic.
store applies for and receives championship kit
no word or advertisement for championship
player inquires and is told there will be no championship.
should this store be reported?
Well no as it seems if the FLGS felt there would be a low turn out they can indeed split up the kits or sell them whole on Ebay or wherever.
Or at least that's the impression I got.
Also what you need to remember is that stores are probably buying loads of these and not running events.
Any bricks and mortar place can apply for them but no one checks if they are actually running events.
They quite simply do not need to tell anyone.

From my store.
The previous winter kit I believe was 25 dollars or so
Every place in my area and next provinces over have all charged a min of 10 dollars.
Some stores have charged more
So ya 3 players is actually enough to cover the cost plus couple bucks left over.
The stores I've seen don't just shut down when a tournament is going on
They are still doing their regular business while having a tournament.
Also the people who organize the tournaments are either not employees like myself, and I don't get paid, or they do work at the store, but they play themselves. Weather or not they are being paid to play. I doubt it. Since they on their own time. And the stores I've seen have more than one employee that works there
So you mean to tell me, your ok with a store that buys a kit for 20 bucks or so, then turn around and sell it for 95 on ebay.
This is not ok in my books.
Your trying to make excuses for greed.
If they don't have the numbers, man power or whatever to host the tournament, them they shouldn't be ordering kits.
I kmow some stores wanted to have tournaments, but couldn't do to not enough kits.
And then other stores just order them to make huge profits.
Not cool in my books and I'd report any store that does this type of practice
Kits are not for a store to take advantage of. They are to encourage players the community and help a store.
The way your so defensive I'd almost think maybe you run a store and commit to this shady practice?
I don't think anyone in their right mind, unless trying to make a huge profit could even agree to such a practice.
So if you did have a store ya, I'd report you in a heartbeat.
Edited by Krynn007Stores had to fill out an online application in order to receive the Store Championship kit, and it's clear from those questions that stores are expected to run those events. The questions are about how many players you can host and what marketing you'll be doing to bring attention to the event.
If someone answered those questions, got approved, and then did not actually run an event but instead pieced out the kit on eBay, I can only imagine that they lied on their application.
Yes, if you know of a store that has this season's Store Championship kit and is not running that event, let FFG know about it.

link? only one I found was "In larger tournaments, the TO may “make a cut” after a predetermined
number of rounds."
16 players sounds like a small tourney to me

As i mentioned I know in the past some were not able to get kits in
There still is a limited supply.
Ffg has even said it themselves that the kits are to help promote the game, community along with giving support to local stores
Buying them, with the sole intention of reselling at an insane mark up price is not what ffg intends, so again yes they should be reported
I don't understand how this is even a question. There are a limited number of kits available, and stores have to apply to get one. Every store that gets a kit means some other store did not get a kit, and therefore can't run a tournament.
So if you get a kit and don't run a tournament, there's a group of players out there who don't get to play. Screwing other people over for your own advantage is unethical, period. If you know of a store that has a kit and doesn't run a store championship, you should write a note to FFG Organized Play and let them know. Then you should call the store owner and let him or her know the store has lost your business.
If you're a store owner who has a kit and is contemplating not running a championship, then you should be ashamed of yourself.
