Splitting Scum and Villainy

By Cununculus, in X-Wing

The ships of the Empire and Rebel Alliance have their distinct look.

The Empire has it´s TIE-Variants in Blue-gray colour-schemes.

The Rebels mostly have their ships in a basic limewash with coloured stripes/additions.

The only exceptions seem to be the Firespray and the Hawk, which are also sort of transferred into the S&V-faction.

When we look at the S&V-faction some ships have a sleek Black&White Black Sun colour scheme. Let´s say they are the Villains. The others have a gritty brown colouring, giving their ships a downtrodden, worn-down look. Let´s call them Scum.

Depending, maybe, on further releases of FFG, but do some of you share the basic idea of splitting the Scum and Villainy into a Villainous Black Sun faction with Starvipers and Z-95´s and a truly gritty Scum version with Y-wings, Scycks, and HWK´s?

Not officially, not meant as a plea for more factions.

But just within your own collection and squad building?

A flavour-wise seperation based on paintjobs?

Both YTs should have "scum" versions as well.. and han himself should have an "Imperial" "Scum" and "Rebel" version..lol

Yeah I am doing that. I also plan to have an all Mandalorian set up. I will also mix them together in Epic.

Eh. My feeling is that the colouration of the ships in S&V are purely a practicality of manufacturing for FFG. S&V is not a formal military force and many of these craft are independently owned (except maybe generic Black Sun Z-95s) so I would expect them all to have unique paint jobs. Just look at the pilot cards for the Z-95s as proof. If I had any skill at painting then I'd make all S&V ships look different so they would be more thematic.

Agreed, it isn't a militairy Force. However, FFG clearly depicts two ship-types in Black Sun livery. So you could create, on your own, a Black Sun group. All the other small ships are intentionally made to look worn-down, so you could create a squad of pirates with old looking rickety ships. They will have unique paintjobs, but the scum Y wing, the Scyck, and the HWK all share this rusty brown colour. And especially the Y wing and HWK do not have the look of higher end expensive fighters. More of cobbled together with illicit stuff and rickety droids.

If we are talking about gameplay, how about Faction cards? There could be Faction Cards like Hutt Cartel, Black Sun, Pyke Syndicate, etc... that give all your ships a benefit and a drawback. Like "all your ships have this extra upgrade but lose one shield". I dont know. Something like that.

If you are talking as a "realistic" squad, I agree that I prefer to have my ships done in a realistic tone in my games even if they are not perfect builds. Something like a TIE Phantom, a TIE Bomber and a Shuttle in one squadron doesnt make any sense.

The problem with Scum is that there aren't enough ships yet to do this. Almost every ship is of one kind of group. Once ships like the Kimogila, Dunelizard, Kihraxz, Rihkxyrk or the Vaksai come out, then you will have interesting squadrons that follow this "realistic" style.

He wasn't with the Empire during the civil war.

I'm probably going to paint at least one ship of each type (barring the big'uns) in Black Sun colors. I was going to do that to my entire collection, but I couldn't resist doing N'dru, Leeachos, and my new Lead Crow Hwk-290. The rest will probably be getting Super Robot Wars Original-inspired color schemes (the Scyks scream Terror From the Deep for me though, so we'll see).

Probably doing a Planet Express Hwk too...

the less turrets we have, the better the game will be (lore be damned)

as for the mix in colors, I personally won't be splitting them. It really speaks to the interaction between pilots, especially when Xizor starts using some grizzly thugs are meatshields.

I do wish the Z-95 came with the pirate paintjob, instead, though. It looks way too elite with the Blacksun colors :P

Imperial Han would be in a TIE Fighter, which is fine, I suppose... but I don't think there was really a Rebel Alliance at that point...

Clearly Most Wanted should have had Zs with two different paint schemes. That they didn't is a huge slap in the something something. ;)

To the OP: no, I'll be mixing and matching pilots to make the best / most interesting / etc. squad I can. Pulpy settings like SW are full of villain teamups and combined threats.

Nope. I am waiting for "Smugglers and Spies" the fourth faction to be revealed, possibly at Gencon this year. It follows the same model that has happened in the LCG. First there was just Rebel and Empire, then Scum and Villiany was added, and then Smugglers and Spies were just added to the LCG.

I can easily see the YTs and the Lambda be the crossover ships for this faction. There are enough named pilots out there in the good ol' EU, or Legends, to fill that faction.

I tend to think of Mandalor as the other faction within Scum and Villainy.

Scum as in "Bounty Hunters. We don't need that scum." - Admiral Piett

Seems to me that FFG is classifying ALL bounty hunters as the Scum part since they would take contracts on both Rebel or Imperial targets.

Villainy....well the Empire is the current seated government and the Rebels are only out to bring down the Empire. So it only makes sense that all the crime syndicates such as the Hutts and the Black Suns would fit under "Villiany" since the Empire and Rebels considers them to be a thorn in both their sides.

Now I undertand yes Han worked for the Hutts, but as a smuggler of goods....never slaves. Also he was never hired muscle for the Hutts and never contract killed for anyone. Just being a smuggle of goods does not classify you as either Scum or Villiany. Unlike Fett who did work closely with the Empire, but also worked for the Hutts and anyone else with enough coin. He also got his target by any means.

So simple breakdown Scum = Bountry Hunters and Villiany = Crime Organizations

That kind of discounts all the "nice guy" Scum already in the faction though: Serissu, Laetin, Palob, Drea Renthal (who admittedly is a pirate queen, though she is principled and Lando got along well with her).

Smugglers are Scum too (generally not villainy, barring the slavers), just not part of the mafia or lawmen-for-hire. Someone has to work for these crime syndicates after all.

I tend to think of Mandalor as the other faction within Scum and Villainy.

Same here bud... it is just kinda there in my mind.

:-)

I prefer to make a squad in gritty pirate colours. The Black Sun scheme makes them far too elite looking indeed.
