Double Hawks

By Nickel, in X-Wing Squad Lists

With S&V coming out soon, I bought a second HWK-290. I tried to make a Rebel version and see how it worked. Here's what I came up with:

100pts

Dutch Vander

- R5-K6

- Ion Cannon Turret

- Flechette Torpedo

- Munitions Failsafe

Kyle Katarn

- Swarm Tactics

- Blaster Turret

- Recon Specialist

- Shield Upgrade

- "Moldy Crow"

Roark Garnet

- Blaster Turret

- Recon Specialist

- Shield Upgrade

I did get to play this list against a fairly new player with Soontir, Carnor, Mauler and an Academy Pilot. I flew in formation as slowly as possible so I could build up my Focus bank. Kyle passed Focus to whoever needed it, and Dutch did the same with Target Locks. Carnor became my primary target, because he kept preventing me from using the blaster turret. The AP k-turned off of the board, and Soontir turtled up and resorted to blocking after Mauler died. Roark died first, then Kyle. Dutch was at full health when he took on Soontir alone. He was down to 3 HP by the time he killed Soontir. It was a fun game, but Carnor is a good counter to the blaster turret.

Any suggestions?

I've always like flying "Devil Dogs" (PS666):

Garven Dreis (26)
"Dutch" Vander (23)
+ Ion Cannon Turret (5)
+ R7-T1 (3)
Kyle Katarn (21)
+ Blaster Turret (4)
+ Moldy Crow (3)
+ Recon Specialist (3)
Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
If you're worried about Carnor shutting off the Blaster (and a lot of the synergy), swap it for another Ion Cannon Turret and change Dutch's droid to R5-K6.

Having a HWK with a Blaster Turret and Crow w/ Recon Specialist can work but don't throw too many Blaster Turrets into a list as they generally take too much to support and have a couple pretty hard counters.

A sad thing about Rebel HWKs is that the way they best prepare you for Scum HWKs is just teaching you how they fly. The problem with that 'test' squadron is that it is using the support effects of the HWKs so much it is unlikely to translate well into Scum. Another problem with trying to fly two HWKs in Scum is that it appears you are going to need to copies of Most Wanted as well to do it.

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough; I bought a second hawk because I wanted to be able to run two Hawks at a time, especially with S&V coming out. I made this to see if I could make a Rebel 2-Hawk list work, unrelated to S&V. I've been playing mostly Imperials lately, so I wanted to experiment with Rebels.

I'm not "worried" about Carnor Jax; he's more annoying than anything. I wasn't prepared to run into a hard counter from a new player, so it startled me a bit.

I'm also not bothered by having to buy two Most Wanted packs. I already own two Firespray, so I was already planning on getting two MW packs anyway. ;)

Mentioning S&V didn't do any favors when you could have just left it as you've gotten a 2nd HWK and want to try running two of them as Rebels.

Looking at the original squadron I'd really like to cut a bunch of upgrades and add a 4th ship. I'd cut the Shield upgrades and everything on Dutch besides the Ion Cannon and then add a Bandit and change Roark's turret to an Ion instead of a Blaster. Changing Roarks turret then makes Recon Specialist a little less necessary; could add R2D6 and Swarm Tactics to Dutch.

Oh, have I got a Double HWK list for you.

Roark + Blaster Turret + Recon Spec

Kyle + Blaster Turret + Recon Spec + Moldy Crow

Wild Space Fringer + HLC + Outrider + Intel Agent

100pts

It's a neat little diddy that focuses on using those Blaster Turrets to cover the Fringer's donut. Also relies on Kyle stacking up some focus tokens and passing them out for added offense or defense.

I think another version is...

Roark + Blaster + Recon Spec

Jan Ors + Blaster + Kyle Katarn/Moldy Crow/Recon Spec

Wild Space Fringer + HLC + Outrider

100pts?

I just like Roark with the WSF, and Jan is neat when supporting either the HLC or Blaster Turret. There are also other versions of these lists using 1 Ion Turret, letting you load up one of the other ships with a couple pts of upgrades, like putting the Jan Ors crew on the WSF in the first list, letting Kyle Katarn pass out Focus or Evade tokens when needed.

I like the look of that second list. Three three-dice turrets. I'll have to put that one on a board sometime.
