When do you use movement phase items,spells,etc.. ?

By chaosbird, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

If an item states that it can be used in movement phase, then when can I use it? Before movement, after movement, or I can decide it?

So usually I read tomes etc before my movement, however if they can be used after movement too, then the spell: Find Gate would mean an immediate gateclosing.

(as you just go in, use the spell and return to Arkham, then can close it in the same turn in the Encounter phase...)

I think I read it somewhere in the rulebook but cannot find it now.. :S

Generally, any time in Movement, unless it says otherwise on the card.

Find Gate, however, doesn't work like that, because you don't get sucked through the gate until Arkham Encounters, so by the time you're in the Other World, it's no longer the movement phase and you can't cast it until next turn.

You can use such items *during* the movement phase.

This means that, AFTER the Upkeep phase you can, say read a tome.

This can happen before moving (so for example you can spend 2 of your 5 movement points, and then move with the remaining 3), during movement (for example if you have 5 movement point you can move by 2, receive a Tome from an investigator in a street area, spend 2 movement points to immediatly read it, and then use the last remaining to move again).

This can also happen after moving but BEFORE the "encounter phase" (example: if you have 5 mov. points you can use 2 to enter, say, the Unnamable location, then spend 2 more to read a tome. The least point would be wasted, unless you have some other way to use it).

Something you CAN'T do is: enter a location, have an encounter there where you get a Tome, and then immediatly read it.

As I said, you can't because since you received it during the Encounter phase, you have to wait for the next movement phase (next turn.

Also, you can't read tomes and use items allowed for the movement phase" when you are in an Other World, since you skip your entire movement phase.

Some people wondered whether Mark Harrigan could do that anyway (since he can't be delayed). We ruled him so he can- just a bit more balancement for his rarely-used special ability ;)

Umm, you don't skip the entire movement phase in the OWs, otherwise you could never cast Find Gate. You don't receive any movement points in the OW though, and can't exhaust items to give you them there (or can, but to no effect), so that prevents the use of movement point requiring items.

By the way, in the REedition of Dunwich, I thought they would change the "Arkham Encounters Phase :" into "Movement Phase :" for the Diniimysterisiswhatever tome. Because we always played that one in the movement phase... as any other tome. How could you get movement points during the encounter phase...

This was the part I overlooked!

Thanks!
