Vassal up and running. Lets battle!

By chriscook, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Very nice module, I especially like the way deployment & command decks are saved. I wish we had that for the X-Wing module. Also, generating the minis from the deployment cards is a great idea.

I just ordered IA on monday, so once I know how to play I'll be into running some vassal matches.

Has the vassal mod been updated with Wave 1 expansions yet?

I'm working on finishing it right now.

I just sent you a PM about contributing to the module, if you looking for help.

Just downloaded Vassal, and am keen to play IA Skirmish. The module looks great!

However, whenever I seem to try and set up a game, it won't let me be player 1. Any ideas what the issue could be?

It all comes down to how you're starting things up:

---Are you clicking File--Load a Mission--and then selecting one of the missions on the list? --> If you start the game this way, then you're already Player 1 by default. To test this, just open the Player Hand for Player 1 and see if you can move cards or tokens or figures onto it. If you can, then you're Player 1.

---Or are you clicking File--Load a Mission--and then selecting "Choose Your Own Skirmish Map"? --> If you start the game this way, then you get to choose which player # you want before you select your map.

When I click File > Load Mission, then select a mission, I only have the option to be the Observer or player 2 through to 4. If I click File > Load Mission > Choose Your Own Skirmish Map, I can select player 1.

Seems weird to me. Any ideas?

This is what I'm getting when trying to select a preset Skirmish Map and Mission:

That's odd. I've never seen that before when I load a pre-set mission.

Regardless, you can select any of the options and become Player 1 once the game is loaded by clicking the "Retire" button at the top of the page and choosing Player 1 that way.

I think I'll try to find a way to make it so that you don't have to worry about this when loading a pre-set mission. Thanks for the screen-shot.

Thanks for the help. You've done a great job with the module, keep up the good work! :)

I'm having that same issue if, at the Select Setup window, I choose one of the 6 preset missions. There's no Choose Side option for Player 1, just Observer, and if i retire, I still can't choose Player 1.

However if I select Choose your own Skirmish Mission Map from the Select Setup window, I do get the option to choose Player 1.

Why does it matter since two players play at a time?

It doesn't mater much, but it could be confusing to people new to vassal, and it's best to fix any of these bugs early in the development of the module.

Have downloaded the new Vassal and battled today. It is really a great job.

However i noted some errors that I have encouterd.

Mission Hazardous Material does not display the proper map. It displays the other Endor map Breaktrough.

And when you choose the mission breaktrough the mission card shows the details for Hazardous Material.

MIssion Data Heist does not show any doors or tokens on the map.

Thanks for the Module and love playing it!

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll try to fix these soon.

I'm glad you're enjoying the mod! You should consider joining the Vassal League, hosted by IACommand. Link: http://iacommand.com/forums/topic/casual-vassal-league-signups/

Downloaded it today as I mostly play campaign with my friends using my physical copy (and they're not interested in skirmish), and it seems great ! Thanks for all of your work thereisnotry.

I'll definitely sign up for iacommand's league to try and get some games under my belt before regionals here in France :)

The league kind of never got off the ground. I have new plans for the league once the site is updated in the next few weeks but it kind of died fast.

Oh, I suppose I'll wait it out to see if things get a kickstart. I managed to play one game the other night with user Monty. It was quite fun.

A shame there aren't more people online throughout the day in the Module.

anyone up for practicing for Nationals?

A ladder and/or frequent tournaments might not be a bad idea to bolster people playing on Vassal. For X-wing there's http://www.challengeboards.net/boards/standings/2167 and as far as tournaments go there's usually one a month between different sites like /r/XwingTMG and TeamCovenant.

disclaimer: I've yet to try IA on Vassal but have been looking for an excuse to do so (I kind of blame summer as well). Also was thinking of starting a tournament but wanted to wait for Wave 2 to be released.

I've been working on an update to the module, and it's almost ready to upload. Here's a quick preview of the additions and alterations.

  • Enhanced color for all maps and tokens.
  • White outlines added to crates, terminals, and mission tokens (for clarity)
  • Strengthened grid lines
  • New character tokens. The backgrounds have been removed and replaced with a solid color
  • Icons added to character tokens for Conditions, Carried Objects, and Targeting.
  • Increase / Decrease damage has been changed to +/- on the main keyboard rather than the number-pad (for laptop users). I prefer this feature, but let me know if you hate it and I may change it back.

I think that's everything. I should have version 1.6 up in the next day or two after I'm sure everything is ready.

Version 1.6 is up & running. Hope you all like the updates.

1.5 seems to be compatible with 1.6, right? We played a game yesterday and I still had 1.5, while my opponent had 1.6.

I wondered where he go the tokens for the conditions from xD

/edit: for those wondering, 1.6 can be found here:

The condition icons that apear on the figure tokens are new, but there already were tokens that could be dragged from the cards/figues/tokens window. The icons on the figures just keep the map more clear, they're part of the figure and you just cycle through them. It keep things from getting cluttered when a bunch of figures are clustered together, and they move with the figures without needing to be selected seperatly. The same goes for those target selection tokens, tne original ones are still in the module but I added new targeting overlays into the figures so you can just turn them on/off.

The only thing that I removed was the ability to type notes for conditions onto the figures, and I changed the damage taken hotkey from +/- on the numperpad to +/- on the main keyboard.
