When was your X-wing Golden Age?

By TheycamefromBEHIND, in X-Wing

For me it was from after wave 3 until wave 4. Coming from an non-EU background, it was the OT ships that got me interested in X-wing, less special rules/mechanics I was also very excited for the potential of huge rebel ships.

What was your happiest time for x-wing? (lets not make this a rant thread)

What your happiest time for x-wing?

When I'm playing it.

About ten days from now, when I have Scum and Villainy in hand.

After the Golden Age of Piracy come the Golden Age of Villainy.... I like it!

Its kind of quiet and slow most of the time but the games happen. Aint a golden age nor a dark age.

Like OP, right before wave 4, but not because of the EU stuff; rather, because of how Phantoms changed everything

To extend these remarks: my golden age of X-wing is the first couple of months after every new wave, when the metagame is unsettled and everyone is running new and strange combos. I'm a Johnny at heart.

For me, the golden age of any game is the time leading up to its release until about the first month after its release. I love the anticipation for the game as I'm learning more about it little by little, reading the rule books when posted, asking/answering questions on the forum. I like when the forums are still small and you feel like a relevant part of the community and everyone is new at the game. For me, that first month or so when the game was new was the best.

But I'm just about as pumped about Scum & Villainy as I was back then, so like Vorpal Sword, I may yet see another Golden Age of X-Wing.

Its hard to answer this question since I'm still playing it. I'm getting into it on a more competitive level than I have before so I'm enjoying venturing into that territory.

On the other hand, Wave 3 was a great point for me too. Other gamers in my area were FINALLY getting into it so I had more than one opponent. It was also the time when I started connecting some of the dots with the importance of asteroid placement and some of the other finer points.

Wave 4 because of Zs, brought me in from occasional causal games into the competitive scene. Rebel swarming with 6+ ships is awesome!

And really looking forward to Feedback Array Zs now!

My golden age of X-Wing was when I first bought and played the game.

And the end is not in sight yet.

Mind you: I am ever so slightly biased. SW (1977) was my first 'proper' movie EVER.

(proper as in not Disney/cartoon)

And it left quite an impression at my very young soul. :D

sure as **** aint wave 5

I came in during four, and phantoms by themselves didnt spoil the game for me. The mostly imperial playbase meant no fat han, and all was well with the world.

Now, waiting for Wave 6 to put an end the endless han/chir/dash parade

Right about now. My brother brought me the base set for my birthday back in October and I've got at least one of everything except the Z95, which I'll have some of when Scum hits (I still can't think of the Headhunter as a propper Rebel ship). I love how the game plays, one of my favourite ships from the WEG era just came out (the 2400) and Scum & Villainy looks sweet as. I'm also lucky enough to have a great bunch of people to play with, which is the icing on the cake.

My golden x-wing age is still going and started about a montg ago.

I had owned the coreset, a falcon, a-, y- and x-wing expansions for a year then, but had only played the game from time to time. Then a friend I hadn't seen in almost half a year came to visit, brought his few things (he didn't get to play much in his area either) and we played a lot during the entire weekend.

Since then I've played a lot more (and jammed more money down FFG's throat) and he told me, that he's expanded his collection and recruited players in his area now as well.

So for me it isn't necessarily about waves (although I'm not a huge fan of some of the weird EU ships), or the "current meta", more how often I get to play and with whom.

When the Interceptor was released, as it is the sole reason for why I bought the game.

My golden age started when I first received the core set at Christmas and its still going strong. Since I only play X-wing with my girlfriend and friends, we don't get the 'meta fatigue' that one might develop if they play competitive tournaments. None of us find any ship particularly over or under powered and we rarely fly the same list twice. Every game is entertaining and usually plays out in fantastically unexpected ways.

I'm tempted to say Wave 1, but I'll say Wave 2. It added in some good ships and there was a lot of variety. Generics could still win big. X-wings were tough to face. Everyone loved Soontir Fel, but I could still kill him with Darth Vader. My favorite list was Darth Vader w/ Concussion Missile and a bunch of Tie Fighters, including Back Stabber and Dark Curse.

Mine is from now to the future. Because the game has only gotten better, despite the sky having fallen...how many times now?

Things will change and issues will arise.... and get solved, as they have been so far. The future of the game is looking better and better.

And my wallet is looking thinner and thinner.....

Probably in 1999 when X-Wing Alliance came out. Man that game was awesome. IS awesome. Star Wars games turned to crap when they went from psedo-flight sims to on rails shooters.

Oh wait, you main the Miniatures Game? Well, it started last Christmas when I started playing, and now, several hundred pounds later, it's still going strong. Tournament Saturday - can't wait!

I started playing when wave 2 came out, actually heard about the game when I saw an advertisement about the Millenium Falcon on BGG and said to myself: ''No way, I don't care if the game is good or bad, I need that ship!'' then look a little closer into it, saw the Slave 1 and I think my heart stopped for a minute there... mistakes were then made....

As for my own personal Golden Age, it's hard to say. Every wave brought something new and interesting that kept the game fresh. Even wave 5. Except for the copycat players bringing a copy-paste list of turret of choice, I think wave 5 is where I saw the most creativity from players. You now actually need to put some thought when building a squad to be competitive, there is so much different threat that it is hard to come up with a build that won't suffer from the luck of the draw. In that sense, Phantom and Wave 5 turret ships helped a lot in this way: You just can't bring anything you like anymore, you need to come up with a plan.

Now, with wave 6 bringing a 3rd faction, I can only see it getting better, especially since, even though 4 of those are ship already existing in other factions, the Scum start with 7 ships. That got to be the biggest wave since the game began! There is a lot of experimentation to do!

Now my own Golden Age. Since I still have as much fun to play this game as when I started, I guess I'm still in it...

I expect my golden age will be not long after the Raider is released and we start getting Epic games in. For me the Epic play format has never really started, so I'm anxious to get that going. Also, the rise of the Advanced as a worthy ship - that will make me a very happy individual.

If I had to say a previous time, it would be when I was first discovering the game. I was blown away from the first time I saw it played on Tabletop and then even more each time I picked up a new expansion and would see what cool new goodies were in each of them. It was a magical time getting into this new game. It got me into so many other things as well, but this game was my gateway drug, and it still makes me happy.

I have been playing since when wave 2 dropped. For me it has to be Wave 4-5, the list diversity went through the roof compared to just flying TIE Swarms and things that might have a chance of handling TIIE Swarms (if they had some luck). It also lessened the importance of formation flying in the game, which brought the game more in line with the maneuver heavy game that I always thought it should be. I think Wave 6 will continue this trend.

I got into X-Wing Miniatures when it was first released and loved it right away and never stopped. So I guess I've been in my golden age ever since. I didn't get to play very often at first though, as nobody else from my area seemed to own the game. My personal high point was the release of wave 2, the Millenium Falcon being my favorite ship by far. The Assault at Imdaar Alpha event was my first ever tournament experience, for any tabletop game. Our local community of X-Wing players grew very quickly right after that, and we now have Monday night X-Wing at our FLGS. So I get to play at least once a week (2-3-4 games per Monday)... and it's awesome! :-) So for the local community, the golden age started after AIA and is still going strong, with new players joining regularly. I continue participating at each local tournaments, even though my results haven't been that great. I mostly see tournaments as opportunities to gain experience, face different/new players and play several games consecutively. I prefer playing casually. The players in my area are getting so good so fast that it's still challenging, while keeping everything a bit more relaxed.
