A-Wings on a whim...

By Knucklesamwich, in X-Wing

I hardly ever play Rebels but since I own multiples of all the ships I decided I would try to get some use out of them instead of my buddies. I decided to go with 3 tricked out A-Wings vs a weird squad my buddy put together trying out some variations. He went with Vader w/ATC, OGP with Fleet officer, Mauler Mithel w/outmaneuver and RGP with an EPT I can't remember. I ran Tycho w/ refit+predator+PTL+autothrusters, Jake w/refit+Outmanuver+PTL, Gemmer w/refit+stealth+PTL and a bandit.

On the alpha the only ship I could bring all guns to bear on was the shuttle and since he was using it to feed focus around I thought it would help to take it off the board. In all my time playing i can't remember a time when I have seen better defense dice rolling then the first two round of that game. At a range 3 engagement my buddy rolled 6 evades with the shuttle and I actually rolled 8 hits! 6 freakin evades!!!! We were both stunned by it. At this point I am really concerned with what to do. I decided to slow go into range 1 of the shuttle and try to get it out on the second round of shooting. This round I learned how deadly mauler Mithel w/ Outmanuver can be. My buddy did a very gutsy range 4 straight with mauler right into range 1 of Gemmer. I was rolling 4 dice still thanks to stealth but mauler rolled 4 hits and I rolled one focus out of 4 dice. Thankfully his other ships did very little thanks to some lucky green dice for me. That's when I learned why Jake is probably the best A-Wing pilot and one of the most fun ships I have flown for either side. His ability makes him a nightmare to try and pin down while still giving him his PTL actions. Since Jake moved after everyone but Vader I was all over the place with him and with Outmanuver he was doing some nice damage. Getting into range one quite often. After killing the shuttle on turn 4 I smoked mauler the next when he rolled 3 blanks and the RGP shortly thereafter. At this point it was Vader vs one hit Tycho and 3 hit Jake. Vader was full health but I still thought I had a chance. New Vader must now become priority 1 IMO. He was nearly untouchable against my two A-Wings. Vader won with 3 hits left.

Being an imperial player I loved the feel of the A-Wing and Jake feels like Soontir Jr. I think from now on I would not run high PS A-Wings without Outmanuver. That made Jake much deadlier and he can reposition very well. A-Wings are soooooo fun to fly, I just wish they could kill stuff!

Dear god, man!

You need the TAB key more than Arvel needed an "eject" button

It was a bit long but thanks for.... Nothing?

It's not about length. A little formatting goes a long way to the legibility of any long text. Otherwise, you're libel to lose the poor reader in the crush of text.

The poor human eye tends to blur giant clumps of words together

Thanks for the edit. ;)

A-wings are easily my favorite rebel ship, and I usually try to work them into all my builds. Since I've started playing, I've had a lot of fun with a Jake/Kyle/Garven focus factory build. A's can be light on damage output, but Outmaneuver is a decent mitigation, and Proton Rockets are fun. Haven't played enough with Tycho, but I want to try more stuff with PTL/Daredevil, etc.

Vader is crazy fun too, even before the incoming Raider buffs, however I find I have to throw engine upgrade on him.

With so many good EPT's now does daredevil really make a good choice? I have never tried it.

A-wings it's cute how hard they try, and they blow up good.

I've actually found them to be one of the most durable ships in the game for their cost

It's amazing how crazy a headhunter gets with an agility and boost + evade, or how Tie Fighters with two shields suddenly don't asplode from one bout of bad luck.

Their cost and relative durability (plus their maneuverability) are the only things excusing that 2 red base offense -_-

Makes it very hard to use the named pilots effectively since their cost goes up but their natural 2 die offense stays the same.

Gemmer does make for one very happy exception, though, since he's cheap enough to be a sore pain in the ass with his ability, and he gets access to predator ^_^

I'm not certain it's a good choice, I haven't tried it either, but it does allow him to come about very quickly without relying on a K-turn. Tycho still gets stress, but the man likes his Red Bull.

I've loved Daredevil on my Engine Upgrade Vader. He can do some amazing things. The trouble is damage output. I just bought my first E-wing tonight for Outmaneuver. I'm gonna try it on Vader some time, but I'll miss Daredevil. You can pull some awesome stunts, lining up shots while dodging other arcs.

Damage won't be a problem once the Raider is released. Vader will be in the running for best deal in the game.

last line pretty much sums them up for me..lol

Next time try throwing some Prockets on Jake/Tycho. The higher the PS the better. Now all of a sudden ships go BOOM and your opponent is shocked that a tiny little A wing just killed a shuttle that was only missing 3 shields. Or that you just 1 shot Whisper/Fel. Or now his Defender only has 1 hull left.

They can quite easily and quickly change the flow of the game. And even if you don't always get them off (I've failed at this in 3 games over the past 42) it affects how your opponent flies. Short of eating a Procket to the face, the next best thing is that you forced her to use her action to BR away, setting up a nice R1 from your higher PS Corran, and now Whisper doesn't even have tokens =P.

A-wings are great once you learn when to engage and when to reposition. To attest to what Jake can do, in one game I ended up with Jake vs Vader, Jake had PtL and VI, his SD was popped and the PR spent. Jake had 1 Hull left, Vader was untouched. Thanks to the fact that I'd given my opponent the initiative I could move Jake after Vader. Eventually I won the game.

As for Daredevil on Tycho, it gives him even better action economy. PtL, EI and DD allows him to consistently make 3 actions each turn. Just maneuver him to point 90 degrees away from the target and then take TL-Focus or something and then DD to face the opponent. This makes it a lot easier to land strong PRs.

EI is an interesting idea, it makes him pretty expensive though.

I love Prockets on A-wings. While they can be hard to fire sometimes, especially with Greens or prototypes, they do make them scary. I've had opponents really try hard to kill a 20 point Procket carrying PT, while ignoring a much bigger threat. Just get a pre-TL on some big ship and watch them squirm.

All this procket talk makes we want to try a Dutch+procket A-wing list. With the new BTL-A4 I think Y-wings can be a real threat.

Well, they always were

Fatties basically dislodged them (way to go there, FFG) because ion just doesn't do enough damage per points and the 2 attack base also doesn't cut it. Against small ships, or less idiotic large ships, ion is simply devastating.

the BTL should give Y-wings a new dimension of damage output to make them competitive damage-wise against the likes of fatties.

It's true that Tycho becomes very expensive, that's why I have a hard time mixing A-wings with other ships as there are few Rebel ships capable of either keeping up or holding their own while pimped Tycho or Jake do their thing. I'm kind of stuck in my Three A-wing game. =/

E-wings fitted as Interceptors can do it, but they are so expensive that you barely have any points left then. (Then again I have a hard time not buying upgrades to optimize my elite pilots)

If you're paying more than 20 points for a 2-dice gun, you're paying too much. A-Wings are super fun, and very effective as part of a mini-swarm, but I have learned they are not something you should be putting a ton of points into an individual ship. Arc-dodgers need to be able to deal a lot of damage in a short period of time to quickly reduce the opponent's numbers and make it easy to continue arc-dodging (and win the game).

A-Wings work better as a very fast moving coordinated swarm operating in groups of 3-4, carrying out range 1 hit and run attacks.

I love Tycho, A-wings are the 2nd best ship in the game ( Y-wings are the best of course)
