Why hardbound for the Compendium?

By ronin3338, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Personally, I would have rather had it be spiral bound, so I could fold it over and lay it flat on the table. Even a softbound (which I would take to Kinko's to be cut and re-bound) would have been preferable.

I would love to have it, but I can't see spending the money for a durable binding when I would prefer to fold it.

Does anyone want to see more books like this, but with a more user friendly binding?

Maybe it has to do with hardbound being more pleasing to retailers? I see what you mean about laying it flat though. I'm still looking forward to getting it, regardless.

how about a DM screen thing with it? that can pop up with all the rules an little nonesenses that you need to play?

That would be a good idea...

I've seen books (kid's books) that stand up like an easel, maybe a format like that?

FWIW I find hard bound to be a user friendly binding. It survives longer and allows me to take it places with less fear of damage. As to why FFG chose hardbound, given its being shipped by itself and not in a box, the hardbound cover will make it much less suspectible to damage in transit through distribution and retail.

Also remember that FFG has already produced a hardbound campaign book for Tide of Iron. So they have a track record for this format.

I always find that the binding and covers of softcover books (like rtl's rulebook) get totally destroyed by laying/pressing them flat. To me, hardcover is preferable to softcover, although if it were up to me I'd ask for the new book to have the same binding as the original JitD rulebook. Spiral wouldn't be bad, either, although I'm never satisfied with the actual spiral bit of the spiral binding. Always gets in the way.

Long story short, put me in the pro-hardcover camp.

Hi,

Binding would be great, but hard cover is also good. I've been reading the Tide of Iron campaign book a lot as a good entertainment. A more more usable combined rules book would also be nice.

Anyway, why don't they release it ! Not even a date is given yet.

Amazon lists it as August 14 or something like that.
