I was just checking the FAQ regarding overlapping ships and came across this on page 8 of the FAQ

Overlapping Inline Ships
Sometimes a round will end with two ships touching each other, parallel, and
facing the same direction. If both ships are the same base size and execute
the same unobstructed straight [1 ] maneuver during the next round, the ships
do not overlap each other and are not considered touching, even though they
remain physically adjacent.

I could have sworn this was not the case in a previous FAQ and that this situation would still be classed as an overlap.

Did this get changed or did I just dream it?

It's been that way for a while, I think.

Yep, been that way for as long as I can remember. Remember, ships move 1-at-a-time, so in that situation one of the ships would move away (unambiguously no longer touching), then the other would move, they wouldn't overlap, and thus would not be touching.

Side note: I don't really like the rule because in all other parts of the game human error in attempting precise placements is allowed to rule. If I start out with a ship near the edge of the board and parallel to it but due to sloppy play it ends up flying off the board while going strait, that's what happens. In this situation, even if the ships did overlap thanks to human error in placing them and the templates, the FAQ says they didn't...

You did not dream it, there was wording in the FAQ quite a while ago, that indicated the touching state would persist turn to turn, but it was changed.

Phew! I was beginning to worry that I was showing early signs of Oldtimers disease
