The base set includes two master (red) and four normal hellhounds. Remember, you do not set out all of the monsters for a dungeon at the start of the game. You only place them when an area is revealed. Normally, the heores will kill off the monsters fast enough so you will have the ones you need later.
okay, 2 master hell hounds in the base set. and if i remember correctly, you don't get any more hounds in the other boxes....fine, so i lost no hound :-)
the question came up yesterday during a rtl-campaign, we played dungeon #3 (dragon lair), and there you have the opportunity to put 3 master hell hounds on the board......strange, but so it's written in my book.
thanks,

Yes, we played that level. Very strange that it calls for 3 master hellhounds. In that case we did substitute a normal for one of the masters and just made sure everyone remembered that it was a master. Things like that give you a queasy feeling about how well the game was playtested/edited.
i just had the fear that i lost 1 hound.....now i'm calm again and everything is alright
yes, we also just used a white hound, no problem at all.
Dont we have to assume that the 3 red hell hounds in this level is a misprint and meant to be 2, since you can never use more mobs than the figures provided. I had thought this had been adjusted in a FAQ but can not find it. On a note for the opposite side of the debate though, in JitD there are 2 master giants in Quest 2 and it does say to use a white one for the second if encountered together.

i guess, that's the way it should be played because it's the same thing as in the first quests of vanilla descent.
but you're right, i looked it up, it's the only quest in RTL with more figures needed then provided in the boxes.

Answered your own question.
I dont think it answers the question at all as Quest 1 specifically says to substitute a white giant for a red one if they are encountered together, but Dungeon 3 in RTL says no such thing. I believe it is incorrect to assume you can do this with the master hell hounds based on this, as all other rules and such state you can not use more figures than what is provided and therefore still assume it is a misprint and supposed to be 2 instead of 3. Of course, play it as you wish, but my money is on a misprint.
I am mostly surprised that it has not been caught for a FAQ change.
