To play skirmish competitively do I need multiple starter sets or expansions similar to X-Wing or is everything unique and a “one of” where multiple copies don’t provide anything additional?
Mulitple Starters and expansions???
Only uniques are one ofs. You get plenty of units in each starter but if you want to be able to build every possible squad you will want multiples.
I dont know right now the answer is yes. But you really only need extra cards so right now with a limited pool it really helps with building. After Wave 1 and 2 comes out and League kits give out more cards not sure its worth in the long run.
If you do play both the campaign and skirmish it would give you a kit for skirmish and leave the campaign version at home.
Edited by Jonnyb815You dont need a second box for the campaign by itself, but i can see getting a second box to have a separate "skirmish set" of cards and tokens for easy transport.
Additionally, there are some Skirmish builds that require more models, specifically, the Trooper and Trandoshan heavy lists are very popular. But there are also some models that you might want a second set for just for the flexibility.
Of course, I have been piece-parting a set out on eBay so take what I say with a grain of salt.
Remember that you are limited to 4 regular cards, and 2 elite cards of a given type. So don't over buy.
They really need to release at least the ones you don't have a full playset of even after a second core (let's see, that'd be... Trandoshans, Nexu, Royal Guards, and E-webs?) as figure packs.
When I was at the FFGC in Roseville buying my copy of IA, the folks behind the counter said there are no plans of releasing the stuff in the core box as figure packs. Not sure how trustworthy Fantasy Flight's own employees are, but given that we already know the entire contents of Wave 1, is seems unlikely that Wave 2 will release models that already exist.
Its a good thing I have lots of trandoshans, stormtropers, and a nexu in my star wars minis collection... As it is, I already use my Han, Chewie, IG88, RGC Star wars minis in place of the tokens. I also keep 10 of my tusken raider minis in my box as well for use with the raider mission.
I've been using a bunch of it for 3d terrain (parked speeder bikes etc), and I have painted knights models as well but just waiting for releases of Boba Fett, scout troopers on speeders, etc. I have a knights models Darth Maul as well but not sure we'll get prequel stuff in IA.
I am using alot of star wars minis for games though.... I like placing a couple of bacta tank models on the board and adjacent models can take an action to heal a damage.

There have been too many instances of an FFG employee giving incorrect information for me to trust anyone not directly affiliated with the area being question.
Not that I expect differently then the distribution you were told.
Edited by ScottieATFThe skirmish side to this game won't really kick in until wave 1 is released, then there will be 20 skirmish missions and sizeable rebel forces to choose from.
I split a second core set with a friend who wanted extra tiles for homebrewed Descent 2E scenarios. He got all of the Rebels and the Imperial and Mercenary uniques, and I got the Imperial and Mercenary generics and dice (and having a second set of dice made the next campaign night quite a bit easier).
I was even able to give him some proxy figures for the cards that use tokens in the core set (except General Weiss): Han Solo himself, a Wookiee scoundrel to fill in for Chewbacca, a trio of Rebel Troopers, a war droid for IG-88, and a couple of generic Twi'lek Rebels for the Saboteurs (somewhere along the way, I lost my bin with my Fringe and Empire minis from WOTC, so I don't have any Duros to proxy for the Saboteurs).
I am so ready for the expansions to hit, though.
Well since it looks like the packs got hit by the ports dont think we will be seeing them by the start of League play.
I dont see the point of just packs of Troopers when the cos will be around 9.99 and you can get core for around 70 online. If one wants troopers etc buy them on ebay or buy a second core.
I do think having a second core will be very useful since you will be able to get four Officers which I think will be huge in skirmish play
Edited by Jonnyb815FFG has already broken down pricing for Wave 1 expansion packs (prices in USD):
Single large model packs will cost $19.95 (General Weiss)
Three model packs will cost $14.95 (Rebel Troopers)
Two model packs will cost $12.95 (Rebel Saboteurs)
Single model packs will cost $9.95
Assuming FFG decides to release the models in the core box set as expansion packs:
3x Stormtroopers will cost $14.95
2x Trandoshans will cost $12.95
1x Nexu will cost $9.95
The question will be if they decide to release things like E-Webs, Probe Droids and Officers as single model packs or not.

Edited by FizzYeah, the more I think about it, the more I think it's better to get a second Core Set than to wait so that I can eventually buy individual packs of the figures I want.
I just did a quick search on eBay, and the IA minis are going for around $9-20 per figure or figure group. If you just want Officers, Stormtroopers, Trandoshans and Nexus you're already looking at $53...at that point you might as well just spend the extra $17 and get the extra dice and Command Cards and Tiles (useful for keeping your Skirmish set separate from your Campaign set). If you know that you'll only ever want extra Stormtroopers (and no other pieces) then it's obviously best to get the individual pieces...but it seems to me that if you want more than that, you'll get a far better value by just buying an extra Core Set.
Full disclosure, some of those eBay auctions are mine.
More stuff going up this weekend, unless someone wants to intercept. (no, my trandoshans have sold)
Generally speaking, I have been charging about $4 a model, + $1 for the corresponding deployment card + shipping.
Exactly what I was thinking: at approx $5/model, it seems to be much less expensive to simply buy another Core Set.
I'm looking through the contents of the non-unique models a single Core Set, and I've written in parentheses the numbers of additional models and Deployment Cards I'd like to have for squad-building:
- E-Web: 2 (+1?)
- Imperial Officer: 3 (+1 for sure, maybe more)
- Probe Droid: 3 (+1 for sure, maybe more)
- Royal Guards: 4 (+4)
- Stormtroopers: 9 (+6)
- Nexu: 2 (+2)
- Trandoshan Hunters: 4 (+4)
At approximately $5 per model, that comes to 19x5=$95...plus shipping. Now, if you just want some Stormtroopers or Officers and if you know that you'll never need the other extra models, then it's probably worthwhile to buy a group or two by themselves...whether on eBay now or perhaps (hypothetically) in an isolated figure pack later on.
But otherwise, I think it's clear that you will get a lot more bang for your buck by simply buying another Core Set for $70 on Amazon or MiniMarket. An extra Core Set will also get you the extra dice (always a good thing!) and extra tiles, so that you can keep 1 set of tiles for Skirmish play and 1 set for Campaign play.
Edited by thereisnotryAnd the dice pack is suggested at $12 if you want to add that in to the bargain of another core. I have not gotten a second core set yet, but most likely will. Had only been holding out to see if they did sell them individually if they would include new cards or scenarios. But, really, I will probably buy them anyway as I tend to get sucked in for Star Wars too easily. Xwing was the same way with buying a second core set as much cheaper than the sum of the individual parts.

Bingo. The Core Set is a superb value.
Okay, I admit: I've taken the plunge.
I've bought everything I need to paint all my minis: brushes, primers, paints, varnish, etc. I'll be using Sorastro's superb tutorial videos, but I'll be using Vallejo paints because they're half the price of Citadel and TheWarStore.com has them for a good price.
And as I was ordering the stuff, I figured that if I'm going to be painting a single group of minis at a time (Stormtroopers then Probe Droids, etc), then I might as well do them all at once. And so I figured that it would be best to just buy the second set now and not look back. What can I say? I love this game! It's the best ever, so I'm willing to spend the money on it.
It's the best ever.
Truths have been spoken.
2x Trandoshans or 2x Nexu will cost $12.95
Why would 2 nexu be the same price as 2 trandotian. Nexu card is 1 model and it's on a larger base. I'm also pretty sure they won't release the core set fig packs
Error on my part. Original post fixed.

Hi I am also interested in doing the same exact thing with this game - cheapest way possible.
I'm looking to buy Vallejo paints as well. Is there a specific package deal that you bought like:
Please Advise, Thanks!
