WEG to the landfill...

By whafrog, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So I have a bunch of WEG stuff I'm unloading. I'm not really looking to sell them, ie "make money", I just want them out of the house. So if anybody wants them, PM me and I'll point you to the kijiji link. I haven't had any nibbles so far, so ignore the price. The only issue is the shipping...books are heavy, so it'll cost. Plus, I'm in Canada.

Since I now have the PDFs of these books (and I don't feel bad...I've bought multiple legit copies over the years, so WEG got their money from me), I'm inclined to just dump them in the garbage, but I know some people would be sad about that, so I thought I'd see if anybody wants a last chance at hard copies. I have the core 2nd edition revised and expanded rules, the main sourcebooks, numerous galaxy guides, and the classic campaigns and adventures.

I'm hoping this post doesn't violate "terms and conditions", since it's not about selling for profit, but about finding a good home. But I'll understand if that's too close to the line...

Not sure how it is up in Canada or even if you have tried to do this. Have you considered looking at donating them to a Local Library, School, Community Center, or some organization like Goodwill?

I suppose I could look into it, but I thought I'd try known SW fans first...

Edit: good call, there is a local children's hospital book sale I should donate them too before they turn into landfill.

If you can't get one of us to take off your hands that is a great idea!

I really hope it goes to someone who can appreciate it! If they are still there after the sale, maybe the kids at the Children's Hospital might get to use them!

I am interested. I have some WEG stuff.

Hey, let me check out your list - there's a couple of gaps that have developed over the years that I might be able to fill from you. I'll look when I get back from this interview. . . .

Do you have a list of the campaign/adventure books that you have?

PMs sent...

don't know if I'm late to the party, but could I get the link if the books are not claimed?

I was told that I was the second person to contact him on this issue, and I offered to take them all at the price he specified, plus arrange for shipping through my FedEx account.

Can’t speak for anyone else, but if the person before me doesn’t grab them all, then I’m planning on taking all the rest that are available.

I'd offer to take them off your hands... I need a good bonfire. :P

Dang! Snoozing, losing and all that.

Good call on offering them here. Far more likely to have a "loving home" than anywhere else.

As a cautionary note on library donations:

1. A local library maintains some Warhammer books, terrain, and even miniatures. The donator explained the game, one of the librarians thought that "yes, that would be good" for kids and keeps on eye on the collection, even loaning out the armies for off-site games the way he'd loan a book.

2. Donated many SF titles to a local library (different from the above). Went back the next day with a second load, found my first load next to the dumpster. Took both loads to a local second-hand bookstore and asked bluntly if they would throw them out, gifted them with a smile after seeing the horrified look on their face.

Get to know who and where you can donate to for such things, even if you think it'll be a one time thing. If you care enough about the items to donate instead of toss, then make sure the recipient will too. :)

I may have been first, but I'm in the middle of a move from WA to FL, so I can't have them sent out quite yet. If your offer is good and they're going to a good home, then enjoy!

So I return from work and see a lot of PMs... but looks like bradknowles has it. Sorry for any disappointments, and glad they're ending up in the community.

Brad's contributed to the community a ton as long as I've been lurking. I'm happy to see them go to him.

and BAD SAMOPHLANGE

dang, get home from work and get nothing

DAM YOU WORK AND NOT HAVING AN INTERNET!

and BAD SAMOPHLANGE

:P

The WEG material* has no nostalgia for me. Instead I see repeated post after post on this forum (and previous star wars rpg forums) wanting this (FFG) game to be exactly like it was. I grow tired of the 'WEG did it this way' that I see again and again. As I said, I don't have any nostalgia towards the WEG products. I feel many of the sacred cows they have wrought on the latter RPG lines should be slaughtered, such as the 'imperial army troops' that are NEVER seen in the movies, video games or that I have read of in any book. The only troops the empire uses are stormtroopers. The argument of another troop type seems to have been squashed with rebels, as the guys in grey jumpsuits we see in the at-st in Return of the Jedi, highly resemble the vehicle pilot outfits in Rebels.

Much like the mostly expunged expanded universe for new stories, I want the old rpg to be forgotten to make way for THIS incarnation of the RPG. The one I feel most vatches the feel of Star Wars.

* I used this word to be diplomatic. :P

Well, THIS incarnation of the RPG features Imperial Army troops and a host of EU materials.

Only because of WEG fanboys... :P

The WEG material* has no nostalgia for me.

I can't say I disagree entirely now that FFG is producing such stellar material. If I never see another bad line-drawing of a Wookiee in a cantina throwing a stormtrooper, it'll be too soon But a while back HappyDaze convinced me to take a closer look at some things, and there are quite a few adventure/campaign gems, such as the Privateers sourcebooks, that are just darn good reference material no matter the setting.

WEG wasn't the only ones to use bad line drawings. That was how it was back then. I don't know of any game line from that era that had great art except for maybe TSR. Back then, they had the money for it. But bad drawings don't make or break a game system. WEG paved the way for all of the EU to come. I have always felt WEG was awesome, and got a lot of stuff right, as long as you didn't want to play a force user :D So much of what they have created is still being used and will be continued to be used by this game and Disney.

Now it is true that that system didn't age well, but most RPG's don't, hence all the versions of everything. But from 1987 through 1991 they were the only new material and the only source of The Force in the galaxy. So we can't really fault them for getting a lot of stuff "wrong". After Wizards took over, things really went from bad to worse. I thought CR/RCR was ok, but SAGA was worthless and I quit playing for a long while after that debacle. Something about pretty much having to buy your special minis that are randomly packed to play this RPG, but the stats on the cards are for a different game...

So while I am still WEGer at heart, I do not want my FFG RPG to be ran like that one. I do love how it feels that FFG went back to some of the basics, and seems to have made combat fast, fun, and exciting again, not the proverbial chess game with some randomness thrown in for good measure. Since WEG Star Wars was my first experience with role playing games, I have a great deal of nostalgia for it. While I was too late in saying I wanted the lot of books, I am glad they are going to a good home. I don't feel any source of knowledge should be burned or thrown away, even my Saga books. :P

Pirates and Privateers is still one of my favorite books. Platt's Starport guide is a great one too. Some of the old adventure modules are dubious at best though.

If I never see another bad line-drawing of a Wookiee in a cantina throwing a stormtrooper, it'll be too soon

To be fair, production values have significantly changed since the 70's and 80's. If you want really terrible, go back to the original D&D for some awful artwork. It's like comparing - oh say, original series 60's Doctor Who to Modern Aughts Doctor Who.

Here is my gaming book selves.

Hey, I like line art illustrations! Nice, simple, and usually easy to understand.

Then again, I am a fan of classic Doctor Who as well.
