Prophecy & other new games

By DomaGB, in Talisman

I played Prophecy for the first time on Saturday.

I would call it a Talisman clone or Talisman wannabe.

Prophecy was added to my "to get list" I think early or mid 2014. I had known about it for over a year, but didn't want another Talisman game previously. But since I started adding more games to my collection and since I like Fantasy Adventure games, I decided to add it to my list. In Nov 2014, I found the Prophecy Dragon Realm expansion on sale. I bought it, believing and hoping I would like the base game even though I never played it or owned it. Shortly after I found a lightly used base game. On Saturday, I finally got to play it. While I was slightly disappointed, I did like it, as it now takes #6 on my top 10 list. This is after 1 play, and may settle in elsewhere.

BTW, this is my to 10 list:

#1: RoboRally

#2: Talisman

#3: Tomb

#4: BANG!

#5: Dungeons and Dragons Adventure System Board Games

#6: Prophecy

#7: Runebound (Second Edition)

#8: Heroes Incorporated

#9: Deadwood

#10: Relic

No, Talisman isn't #1 but 5 on the list are fantasy games, and Talisman is the best of all those, and will most likely stay there forever. It also is the most frequently game my group plays. And Relic inspired by Talisman is also on the list...

It has been slow playing some of the new games I bought in the last year & a half. Still haven't played:

Belfort

Boomtown

Carson City (although I just got this about a month ago)

Dragon Rampage

2 of the D&D board games (but that's ok, gonna play 1 of them for awhile before we go to another)

HeroQuest (another recent pickup in a group effort, although I played this in the 90's with 1 of my friends)

High Noon Saloon

Pillars of the Earth

Shadows over Camelot

And to make things more interesting, Tax returns came in and bought some more games. They haven't arrived but include:

Bang the Dice Game

King of New York

Battlestar Galactica

Exodus: Proxima Centauri

Cutthroat Caverns

Alien Frontiers

Dread Curse

And I am not mentioning some expansions to games I haven't tried yet or ordered!

There are at least 2 more games I will buy this year when they are available:

Good Cop Bad Cop

Spyfall

There are 2 main groups I game with; my gaming group, and my extended family which meets once a month for family get togethers. Since I am the gamer I am getting games for this. But there have been some exceptions. Interestingly, Dread Curse may be the 1st cross over game for these 2 groups, Bang! was a bust on that. My gaming group didn't care for it.

I like Prophecy too. Sometimes.

When I'm not playing Talisman.

Or have access to it. :P

RB below not only Prophecy but the D&D games  ?

How do you find the time...?

I got 2 games for my birthday 6 month ago, Arkham horror and Game of Thrones. Still haven't tried GoT. I find 2 kids and early mornings limiting our gaming. Especially since we've a couple of Munchkin games, Carcassonne, Dragon quest and a couple of other games to choose from as well. Last week a friend of mine made me try 40k for the first time and he wants me to buy my own army but I honestly can't see me playing it enough for that, even though I liked the game. But if someone has a spare army let me know OK..? ;)

Anyway, thanks for sharing your list. Even though I rarely have time to play I do like new games and games recommended om this forum tend to be worth trying.

Yes, I truly don't have the time to play Talisman more, let alone new games. My commute to work takes another 2 hours out of my day, plus work itself. I have several volunteer activities that take some time up too.

On a brighter note, and I think Doma or others have asked me about this, but it appears my wife and faithful co-player has now decided that we should get the online game. So I guess I will be going that way, too. Brave new world?

I wasn't very clear, but it may settle elsewhere. I only played Prophecy once, and the D&D board games about 4 times, and Runebound about 5-6 times. They each need more play to find their true position.

My group goes in streaks, sometimes we will meet 2-3 Saturdays a month, then we don't meet in 2-3 months. The party/social games get their chance once a month with my family get togethers. And my youngest son is becoming a gamer and he has friends over, so I game with them sometimes.

I just love owning the games to be honest.

Some I haven't played for years and yet I keep buying them. I have just bought Dungeonquest Revised edition.

I haven't taken it out of the cling film yet but there is something really lovely about having a brand new game in your hand and looking at it propped on your bookshelf.

I will play it eventually but enjoy just looking at it in its perfect state at the moment. A Pandoras box full of new wonders and delight.

Does that make me weird ?

:)

Having lots of games you haven't played yet. Check!

Keep on buying more games in spite of above fact. Check!

I get a little stressed when I watch my unplayed collection. Or those games I have only played a couple of times for that matter. So, uh, yeah, maybe you are a little weird ;)

Nice list.

I also like the LoR co-op, it was on my top 10 list for a short time, but was pushed off by newer games, but truth be told I haven't played it in about 4-5 years, and only played it 3-4 times.

I do have a real bad itch to play it again. It may make a resurgence. I own everything except the last expansion, but the reviews and everything I have seen on it, makes me not interested. I also think I will not like the Sauron expansion though I do have it, I doubt I will play it. Friends & Foes is great though!

When I was big into collecting the LoR games, I wanted to get the War of the Ring, but recently (last 6 months) found its pretty much a war game, so am glad I didn't get it. However it's new little brother Battle of the 5 Armies might be small enough to get my interest.

I have seen reviews and videos of Galaxy Trucker and it greatly intrigues me. It reminds me of the chaotic fun of RoboRally, however, I am not a fan of timed play. That may be the deal breaker for me, it was on my list "to get", but removed it because of that. This is a game I have to try before I buy.

As for Twilight Imperium, I have decided I don't want epic games, I have enough with Talisman and other epic big games. But the theme seemed awesome so I just bought Exodus: Proxima Centauri, which I am told will fix that itch. I would definitely try Twilight Imperium but wouldn't want to add that to my group's game play.

A friend of a friend told me a few months a new favorite of his is Carcassonne, I had heard of it of coarse, and have been hearing more, one of these days I am gonna try the trial version on Xbox and see if I like it. I like Catan and get the impression its a brother of sorts.

Since you are throwing out a top ten list....

1. Bloodbowl

Preach! Testify! Granted, not my #1 game of all time, but good to hear people loving BB. On a side note, Carcassone stands out like a black hole in the middle of a virgin, snowy field on your list  .

Not sure my list is up to date, though looking at it, no complaints:

#1: WWE Raw Deal

#2: Talisman

#3: Middle-Earth

#4: Marvel Heroes

#5: Blood Bowl (Third Edition)

#6: Arkham Horror

#7: Middle-Earth Quest

#8: Conan Collectible Card Game

#9: Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit

#10: The Price of Freedom: The American Civil War 1861-1865

I'd say closest games to getting in are Memoir 44 (hell, after 150+ plays, would be hard to argue against it) and A Study in Emerald. Not a whole lot of short games there, ironically, my second most played, Revolver (1,200 plays going to be reached this week) doesn't make the list.

Memoir 44 is another war game I have slight interest in trying.

Update!

I have now joined a board game meetup. Folks on BGG kept telling me to find one, and my mother told me about meetup online as well, so I tried it.

Glad I did. It's free. I found a group I meet with every Monday night. I been doing this for a month now and love it!

Every week I learn a new game, and often 2 new games.

Some of these games are games on my "to play" list.

I finally have played Shadows over Camelot. I liked it so much I brought it to my family get together. It went over well. This game is now my #10 favorite game. Warning: it is not as great as the hype, but still is good. The game starts slow but once the board starts to gnaw on you the tension is great. And the 2nd time you play you also like it more.

I have played and like Bang! the dice game, unlike most people, my family and I prefer the card game, don't get me wrong, the dice game is good, and shorter (not by much, if you play the card game with right expansions). This comes in at #21.

King of New York/Tokyo. Interesting little story here, after getting it I went to a game convention, about a half an hour away. I loved it! I signed up to play Tokyo so I could learn New York easier. I thought the game so-so, didn't understand the hype. I then saw a booth that was offering free promos for New York if you played their copy. So I did. I was not impressed. In fact I liked Tokyo more. here simpler is better, but still Tokyo didn't awe me. I do think after some expansions come out new York will be better. I will wait and see, they come in at #27 & #29.

Cutthroat Caverns. What a hit! My group and I loved it. Instantly comes in at #6. My 3rd favorite fantasy game (after Talisman and Tomb). After 1 play, I turned around and bought 3 expansions.

Alien Frontiers. Another hit! Even bigger. My 1st Kickstarter game, although I didn't get it from them. I absolutely love this game. Comes in at #4. I was taught the game at my 1st or 2nd meetup gathering. I turned around and bought the 2 expansions.

I did finally find a copy of Good Cop Bad Cop, for only $10, its on it's way. haven't played it yet.

Cosmic Encounter was mentioned by someone. Interesting little story on this. I knew of the game, it's Tom Vasel's favorite game and I watch lots of his videos, but it did not spark any interest for me. A couple Saturday's ago I went to a local game store to play board games, as my friends were not getting together. And someone had Cosmic Encounter and it was asked if we would play. I said I would be glad to try it. Bam! Instant hit!!! It is now near the top of my "to get list" along with 3 expansions. Love it! It comes in at #7. WTG FFG!!! :D

Other games I have since played:

Werewolf. I played 2 versions at the game convention and loved it. I had a home made copy and shared it with my friends and it was a big hit. It comes in at #8.

Cleopatra and the Society of Architects. This game was on my radar/wish list. My meetup group had a copy and dug it out for me. I loved it. It is OOP but found a copy for $35. It is #16.

Faces. A party game Tom Vasal says many great things about. But is OOP, so I got Tom's homebrew version. When it arrived I was not impressed but remained hopeful. Played it at my family get together, it was hilarious. My stomach was sore for 4 hours later laughing. We all loved it. #18

Carson City. Too soon to say, played one 2 player game. Its a game that needs more than 2 to shine. Jury is out.

Castles of Mad King Ludwig. Was on the edges of my radar. Enjoyed it, won't buy it unless I find a cheap copy. Nice game nonetheless. #23

Alhambra. I heard of it. Was not interested, was hesitant to play it. Seemed too Euro for me. Liked it. Places below Castles of Mad King Ludwig at #31, and was surprised. I would play it again.

Nexus Ops. Heard of it. Don't care much for war games. Wasn't much interested. very hesitant and reluctant to play. Risk is at the very bottom of my list of games I would play. Small World slightly above that. Nexus Ops surprised me. I would play it again, and now say why play Risk at all when I can play this. Hence knocks Risk off my list. Won't ever want to play Risk again. #38

Stone Age. Was on my list "to play". I thought this Euro would have strong theme. It didn't. Disappointed. But better than Lords of Waterdeep, by one spot at #41.

Kingsburg. I thought I might like this as about as much as Alien Frontiers. Hugely disappointed. Sorry FFG :( Too dry. #44

Moral of the story, join a meetup! Play games outside your groups' comfort zone. Learn new games. Be surprised good and bad.

More to come I am sure. :)

#1: RoboRally
#2: Talisman
#3: Tomb
#4: Alien Frontiers
#5: BANG!
#6: Cutthroat Caverns
#7: Cosmic Encounter
#8: Werewolf
#9: Dungeons and Dragons Adventure System Board Games
#10: Shadows over Camelot
