Do you think FFG would pull a wiz-kids and make a companion game to X-Wing, but have it be different, yet 100% compatible with X-Wing? Like for the Episode 7 news, do you think they'll make a separate game for Episode 7 that also happens to work with X-Wing?
Wiz Kids does this with Dicemasters among other games. And you can mix and match DC, Marvel, Yugioh, etc.
That would be great, they could design on the risky side and still keep purest happy.
No. Because while they may make a companion game, they won't screw the game over like Wizkids inevitably does.
I would say no, simply because Armada is a thing. Granted, I can guarantee at least one of us is going to play Armada and use X-Wing as a zoom-in of the squadrons of the game.
How does that work? If it's the same system, and totally interoperable, then it's the same game, right?
The above is what I typed before realizing that Epic is basically a different game with the same rules. 
It should be pointed out that FFG already does this with their RPGs. Their Star Wars, 40k and End of the World RPG lines all consist of multiple games, marketed AS separate games, that use the same basic rules system and are cross compatible. (Ok, I'm assuming the End of the World games are/will be cross compatible if you can think of a situation involving multiple apocalypses, they use the same game mechanics).

I see this idea of a "separate but compatible" game brought up all the time, often in relation to the prequels. But abbrev I think about the idea for any length of time, I keep finding myself wondering: What would that even mean?
It seems to be the there are only a limited number of options, and they're all bad ones:
1) You make a virtually identical game, but balance it differently - powerful ships cost relatively more or less. In that scenario, the games are separate, but not compatible - you couldn't move ships from one to the other, because they're be balanced wrong. A 40 point X Wing ship might suddenly become cannon fodder. So that's no good.
2) You make a similar game, bit I've that is different enough that they cant cross over. Again, this means they're not compatible, and essentially you've just designed Armada. Which is fine, but bit what people seen to be talking about.
3) You make a completely identical, identically balanced game, but set out in a different time period, and then just prevent people from playing then against one another in tournaments. So, you achieve separate but compatible, but you split your player base, and frankly, if they're identical, why even make a separate game? Other than marketing, I suppose, but even if they were sold that way, would they really be separate? Ask you would do is make it that much harder for people to find effects for their particular version of the game, and FFG would still have the headaches of balancing then against one another, since people would be playing friendly games like that. This approach would technically work, but it would attract just about every downside.
The same problems crop up if you make special rules for when players play against one another (like, one side gets 150 points) - it forces people to take multiple lists with then to competitions, still splits the player base, still has all of the balance headaches...
Honestly, I don't see a way to add sequel (and prequel) ships to the game that is ever going to be more efficient or otherwise better than simply adding those ships to the game. Sure, a few people in here will hyperventilate about ARC 170s facing off against whatever those new X Wings get called, but the vast silent majority of the playerbase are simply going to be happy to see the cool ships from the movies that they like flying against each other.
Oh, and none of my above post is meant to imply that I would be opposed to, for example, reissuing a version of the core set with perhaps an N1 and two droid fighters, or a TFA-era X Wing and two TFA TIE equivalents. Just that those sets, if released, would be nothing more than new entry vectors into exactly the same game that you get into if you buy the current core set.

Personally I feel the whole point of a miniatures game is being able to play 'what if' scenarios where forces, that never actually clashed in the source material, face off.
As for new ships, I think a new core set (in addition to expansions) would be a good idea. Customers getting into this game because they saw the film and want to play a game with those cool spaceships might be disappointed if they first have to buy a box with ships that they did not actually see, even if it is original Star Wars stuff.
High on my wishlist is a kind of campaign supplement with a lot of scenarios.
Imagine that X-Wing V2 (running tittle) takes place during The Force Awakens timeline, and while it is compatible, the tournament scene isn't played that way. Imagine that typical tournament games are 150 points, and your typical TFA X-Wing (McQuarrie model) X-Wing is 38 points base and as a result has an extra attack die, and extra shield. (Or whatever I'm not really looking at fine tuning balance right now). Maybe a TIE Fighter costs 20 points for the cheapest version, but it now has shields. The entire power balance will be different for this new game, and perhaps it is only "Balanced" against itself.
The BENEFIT of doing this would be that FFG could develop 6-10 new ships fairly quickly, without having to playtest them against every card and combo that exists in X-Wing today. It also allows FFG to have occasional crossover tournaments that allow both games, but I wouldn't expect that to happen much if at all. Casual tournaments perhaps, like store-only events that aren't official might be more inclined to do an event like this.
I'm ready for a second edition of x-wing, with a new core set and rules. They can sell conversion packs for the old minis like they did with descent.

Attack wing already exists, and is fully compatible.
My friends and I did a battle that was Imperial vs rebels vs scum vs united federation of planets.
Bobba Fett and his pet green dragon died quickly (we didn't know how armor worked) while the rebels and imperialz killed each other on simultaneous attacks. Kirk got force choked to death by Vader for disobeying the prime directive. Benjamin Sisqo stayed cloaked and ended up winning the day by following the prime directive's non-interference policy.
