The Royal Guard go to War

By Englishpete, in X-Wing Battle Reports

I attended a tourney yesterday at Game Parlor in Virginia. It was 5 rounds of Swiss followed by a cut to the top 4 and 30 people showed up.

I took

Carnor Jax, Predator, Royal Guard Tie, Hull Upgrade, Shield Upgrade (36)

Royal Guard Pilot, Predator, Royal Guard Tie, Hull Upgrade, Shield Upgrade (32) x 2

I can't remember all the squad details but here is a synopsis of the games.

Game 1 100 - 0 win

Nera Dantels, Dead Eye, B-wing/E2, Recon Specialist, Heavy Laser Cannon, Adv. Proton Torp, Proton Torp, FCS.

Jan Ors, Blaster Turret, Moldy Crow, Recon Specialist.

Bandit Squadron.

Game 2 100 - 32 win

Echo, VI, FCS, Rebel Captive, ACD

Howlrunner

Backstabber

2 x Obsidian Squadron

Game 3 39 - 32 win

Rear Admiral Chiraneau, Predator, Ysanne Isaard, Moff Jeffjerrod, Rebel Captive, Engine Upgrade

Whisper, FCS, ACD (maybe something else)

Game 4 26 - 100 loss

Han Solo, Millennium Falcon, Predator, C-3PO, Gunner, Engine Upgrade

2 x Tala

Bandit

Game 5 100 - 0 win

Corran Horn, FCS, R2-D2, Predator

Biggs ?

2 x Bandit

In the end I was 5th after the Swiss with 3 Full wins, 1 modified and a loss and the loss was due to horrible dice.

All in all a very fine day for the Royal Guard, especially considering what I faced. Whisper, Echo and Corran were all killed and I almost had Chiraneau sa I had 2 ships on 4 HP each to the Admirals 5 when time was called.

Viva the Interceptor.

Congratulation. It's nice to see an Interceptor list doing good, even more so without Push the Limit on any ship.

By the way, Carnor with this loadout should cost 36pts, not 34.

36 is correct. Mis-typed. Corrected now and correct at the tourney.

Agreed. I've always regarded Interceptors as the pilot's ship - you live or die based on the manoeuvres you choose the the actions you take. Nice work!

Some interesting lists too - in the first Nera is seriously over-equipped. I'm guessing it might be a fairly new player with a limited selection of ships to choose from?

The guy who flew Nera was doomed from the moment we saw lists. Jax was a terrible match for him.

He left his Z in range 3 of me 2nd round , but had no shot from the other two ships, so the Z was done in one round.

This allowed me to get all three Int's into R1 of Nera and Jax at R1 of the HWK as well.

Nera went down to Twelve, Predator shots before she could shoot even a normal shot.

It took me a turn to get Jax in behind the HWK and that was that.... we were done in just over 20 mins.

My opponent is fairly experienced but likes experimental ship lists and this one just didn't have an answer to mine.

All in all, Jax really messed with everyone except the Han list where Han killed him when I rolled 3 blanks and took 2 hits and a double damage crit, having dropped the shield already.

Congrats on your success. I also placed 5th at a recent store championship. Hopefully we can both improve our ranks in future tournaments!

My list was:

Soontir, PTL, RGT, Stealth, Hull

Turr, VI, Stealth

Carnor, PTL, RGT, Stealth, Hull

However, I'm very much looking forward to autothrusters and will try this list in future tournaments:

Soontir, PTL, RGT, Stealth, Autothrusters

Turr, VI, Stealth, Autothrusters

Carnor, PTL, RGT, Stealth, Autothrusters

In proxy matches I've been very happy with how autothrusters compensates for turrets since you can't arc-dodge and must put more faith in the dice. I expect to see more interceptors and a-wings in future tournaments due to that change. :-)

Congrats on 5th. I am still undecided on Autothrusters as they are almost useless against non-turrets.

Regardless, I'll still be flying my Ints. :-)

btw, your list is the one I would run :-)

I'm fairly new to this game and my casual opponent was trying out some formation tactics but got wrecked by Han Solo and Airen Cracken with assault missiles! It was great fun!

With 3 Int's in a list I split mine up to approach the selected target from different angles. They all select one target, but it usually means 1 of mine is not taking all the return fire, which is key.

Congrats on 5th. I am still undecided on Autothrusters as they are almost useless against non-turrets.

The goal is to never be at range 2 when in arc - well the best goal is never to be in arc, but if you have to be in arc then range 3 will likely give you an extra evade with autothrusters and stealth when combined with a focus. Then close quickly to range 1 during the next round and concentratefire to take out small ships before they fire back. With large turrets attempting to follow and fire at range 3 is the objective, unless the Outrider with no shot at range 1. In that case close in tight for the kill in 2-3 rounds.

In these situations, autothrusters + stealth + focus will usually lead to a near 95% miss chance.
