So while I was looking at X-Wing stuff at the local comic store, and I noticed Attack Wing bases look very similar from outside the packaging, and they have more color options than just clear. I couldn't locate much info, so I was wondering if you could indeed use Attack Wing bases and if you think that having a more opaque base ruins it a little, since its supposed to be 'invisible'.

STAW bases don't have guide nubs. They have indents instead.
The pegs are slightly different, too. They're not perfectly compatible with XWM pegs.
I wouldn't mix them. You might be okay to use them in very casual play, but they're definitely not suitable for competitive play. (I've actually played against someone who used STAW bases in a tournament, but we were both so far from the making the cut that I didn't mind. It was pretty much a casual match at that point.)
Litko might make some colored bases that are compatible with XWM.
yeah they are not tourney legal i'm afraid (the guide nubs count for everything but range [and i have seen people clip asteroids & other ships with them] which, as Dave above said, are absent on the attack wing ones...
i've played people with them in casual games and i'm fine with that (as i am with proxy cards) so if you just gotta have 'em (and your opponents don't mind in casual games) go for it but just beware-i wouldn't take 'em to a tourney...
I would recommend against using them and just pick up some spray paint.
The Attack wing bases are different enough to cause problems, the lack of the guide notches as noted above and the shape is also slightly different, they have straight edges (if i remember correctly) where the x-wing have slightly angled sides.
I liked the color AW bases when they came in the Dominion War, so what I did was use a really bright and vibrant Bic marker set to color my XW bases and pegs than simply used a gloss laquer to seal the color. Additionally I use a washer in the base, then use a clear silicon to hold it in place to give the base added weight and traction. Another option I've done is to spray paint the base in a gloss black the dot the base with white and a few blue and red dots to simulate a star field
Just a few relatively quick and cheap ways to spruce up the boring bases, while remaining tourney legal.
