Cutting into the Falcon

By bswaim, in X-Wing

I'm wanting to remove the cockpit and move it but I'm having trouble getting started. I know there threads on this but I can't find any on cutting the tube/hallway/walkway off . I've tried using an exacto knife but I can't get a good deep cut. And how do you cut where it meets the side wall of the saucer.

Can anybody post pics on where to start on cutting and how to do it? As hard to find pieces I would hate to ruin a $30 model only to find I didn't see the right way to mod it.

Thanks in advance.

I also have trouble posting pictures from photo bucket. It won't add the link. any help on that also would be appreciated.

Thanks again.

You have 3 choices when cutting into the falcon,

1) a hobby knife like an exacto, this takes a lot of patients and care, I myself sliced myself real good (then again it wouldn't be one of mine if it didn't have my blood sweat and tears in it)

2) a heavier hobby knife (this is a more super duty knife like a fresh box cutter or larger exacto blade again see above about patients and care

3) A razor saw. Razor saws are nice again patients and care (less chance of it coming at you at high velocity so cuts on the modeler are down) The cons of using a razor saw is the angles of attack on the model itself. Due to the fact that you are going to be dealing with a physical saw getting in and pin point angles is going to be tuff but not impossible.

This was my jump into the Yt-1300 series.

YT-1300 - Lost Star Posted over at a few maneuvers and it's still in the process of being worked on.

For this I used a hobby knife to this point and lots of time. I cut the cone part of the cockpit off first that let me "get at" the "tube"

Plasticard and green stuff later and viola

I used the try-and-error method.

Tools I recommend for the job:

Tamiya Plastic Scriber II

Tamiya Handy Craft Saw

With the Scriber you can cut the plastik from above and make it easier for the exacto knife.

I also use a standard cutter for heavy duty.
