3 Y Wings

By MacchuWA, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I have three Y Wings, and want to fly them all in a list. I considered all gold squadron pilots with ion cannons, and then filling the 31 points up with any number of things, but I then thought that I might try to be a bit more creative. This is where I'm at right now:

Dutch, Ion Cannon, R7-T1

Horton Salm, Blaster Turret, EU and R2-D2

Gray squadron, Ion Cannon, EU and R5-D8

The idea is to use boost to arc dodge as much as is possible with the Y wings (a task made easier by relatively high pilot skill), and use regenerative droids to try to keep them alive long enough to mitigate the limited damage output.

I'm concerned about the usefulness of combining blaster turret with EU - they're both really useful, but I can only ever use one or the other in any given turn. Swapping it out with an ion cannon all but eliminates any any damage output, and I'd need to drop the gray down to a gold to do it, making his EU much less useful (rebel swarms are common in the group I play with, so I'm expecting mostly low PS opponents).

Any thoughts?

I tried a 3 Y-wing list the other day and it didn't go well.

I had some proton torpedoes on Salm, but didn't get a chance to get them off because even though I had the target lock, courtesy of Dutch, I couldn't keep anyone in his arc.

I didn't try boosting at all, but the one thing that I did like, that I've incorporated into other lists is putting predator on a gray with blaster turret, so that I get some rerolls even without the target lock. (You just have to add on the R-unit that gives an elite trait.)

Any thoughts?

How about some Bombs?
Play Catch-me-if-you-can with your opponent, Ion him - then drop a bomb in his path.
Easier said that done but likely to be hilarious if you pull it off
“Dutch” Vander (33) Y-Wing (23), R7-T1 (3), Bomb Loadout (0), Ion Cannon Turret (5), Seismic Charges (2)
Gold Squadron Pilot (35) Y-Wing (18), R5-K6 (2), Bomb Loadout (0), Proton Torpedoes (4), Ion Cannon Turret (5), Engine Upgrade (4), Seismic Charges (2)
Gold Squadron Pilot (32) Y-Wing (18), R5-P9 (3), Bomb Loadout (0), Ion Cannon Turret (5), Engine Upgrade (4), Seismic Charges (2)
Here's another I'm dying to try out:

Gold Squadron Pilot (25) Y-Wing (18), BTL-A4 Y-Wing (0), Bomb Loadout (0), Ion Cannon Turret (5), Seismic Charges (2)

Gold Squadron Pilot (25) Y-Wing (18), Bomb Loadout (0), Ion Cannon Turret (5), Seismic Charges (2)

Gold Squadron Pilot (25) Y-Wing (18), Bomb Loadout (0), Ion Cannon Turret (5), Seismic Charges (2)

Biggs Darklighter (25)

with blaster turret, I you use EU to boost you wont have the focus to shoot it.

I plan on trying Horton with blaster turret, r2d6, and predator.

hell get rerolls at range 1, and 2 dice to reroll at range two.

hopefully be pretty painful with the blaster turret.

Or:

Dutch (autoblaster, bomb, seismic, R7T1)

Gold x 3 (autoblaster, bomb, seismic, R2)

You've essentially created some meaty dogfighters who can dish out the pain at close range. It also gives interceptors and the like pause as they are potentially taking some heat from a good bomb drop. Those bombs have a range two diameter...can be tough to avoid. You could potentially destroy an entire swarm in one round.

I don't have much faith in 3 rebel ships lists of any sort (not counting ones with fatties, ofc, because they're fatties)

Definitely try to include a 4th man in with those 3 Ys and don't worry about EU & arc-dodging too much.

1.) Y-wings are not fatties. they cant abuse range 1-3, condition-less, 360 degree fire with amazing reliable durability and the boost + large base interaction. As a result, arc-dodging is not going to be anywhere near as effective as it seems

2.) if you're running ions, you don't need another **** thing to arc dodge effectively :P

In the end I went with a shield upgrade in place of the EU on Horton. Went 1 and 3, so not a complete disaster, but the blaster turret wasn't as useful as I was hoping. Dutch and R7 was good, but I think I'll swap out Horton, rejig points a bit. Not quite sure what I'll put in there instead - couple of rookies, maybe Corran? Still thinking.

Don't be scared of generic gold squadron pilots. They're quite good value for their points once you slap on a turret.

A friend of mine surprised me with this list the other night,

Dutch R7 astro, 2 x flechette, ion turret, hull upgrade

2 x Gold both with 2 x flechettes, ion T, hull upgrade, R2 astro

99 pts

Kind of thru me for loop, he caught my Deci doing a hard 2 out of a corner...ioned me right off the mat.

HeHe sneaky bugger!

I had some success against Deci Whisper list with:

2x Gold + Ion Turret

2x Dagger + Advance Sensors

I think people refer to this as Golden Daggers.

Have you considered R2-D6?

Zombie Squad? You'll have to wait for the next wave to drop but it might be fun :P
