Dices as counters

By HeTu, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi, first of all sorry for bad english =)

I have an idea to use some d8 or d10 dices as sanity and stamina (and maybe money) counters. Have someone try this already? Will d8 be enough to counter max san or sta with "buffs"?

Thanks!

Me and my friends already do this. We started doing it as soon as we got the game, because we immediately realized that it was a lot easier than messing about with all the little tokens. So I've never actually used the sanity/stamina tokens! :)

We use d10s for current Sanity/Stamina, d20s for dollars, and a d100 (percentile d10s) for tracking successes against the AO during the Final Battle. We also use dice whenever there's something special to count up or down - like the tokens on a Rumor, or the Ancient One's attack check modifier.

In most cases, these types of dice are all you'll ever need, because maximum San/Stam are very unlikely to be higher than 7. I don't know what "buffs" you're thinking of, but getting any character's max sanity or stamina above 10 requires you to get several special cards/encounters and it's very unlikely to happen.

In my experience it's also rare for anyone to get more than $20, since once you've got that much you might as well go and spend it. The Ancient One, likewise, is unlikely to require more than 100 successes in the Final Combat unless you have 8 players.

Most investigators could have their current Sanity/Stamina tracked with d6s quite comfortably, but it's usually a bad idea to have 'tracking' d6s on a table littered with other d6s - because someone might accidentally grab your stamina die and use it roll a skill check.

We always do too.

Especially for rumors (instead of placing Clue tokens on the card or whatever is required).

We started doing it for money as well when invesgators with Alchemical process and retainers started to appear too often- always asking for more cash, or for some change.

Thanks, guys! It really helped.

Looking forward to get some dices here http://www.dice.co.uk/fs_poly.htm

Red d8 for sta, blue d8 for sanity and green d20 for money, i think happy.gif And ~20*d6 for the awful-default-dices replacement.

I like using dice as a turn counter when fighting the Ancient One. Specially if the ancient one's attack gets harder every turn, it's easy to forget the modifier after a while.

I started of using dice then my friend went to dice. Then I went back to the Brains/ Hearts. I mean come on you bought the things so might as well get your use out of them plus in our games dice are flying all over the place and do hit stuff. So may move you Sanity die from a 6 to a 2 and you don't notice, etc.

(what with atomically correct brains but the cartoonish hearts?)

The better to drive us all insane?

What would a cartoonish brain look like?

So you want roundish hearts with muscles and ventricles and an aorta? gran_risa.gif

It was probably just easier to print hearts and ovals on the monster chits.

I recommend sets of Call of Cthulhu dice, which have Elder Signs for the highest face, and little tentacle designs around the numbers, which make them... much harder to read, actually. But that's part of the fun.

That's just one place; loads of online shops stock them. I found mine in the Orc's Nest in London, quite recently, so I don't think they can be quite as 'limited edition' as they claim.

My group and I use red WoD D10s for stamina trackers, and blue WoD d10s for Sanity. Weeeell... technically we haven't played a game since I impulse bought the blue sanity dice, but the principle is the same. :P Before that we used D6s for sanity since I think we pulled a 7 san investigator all of once and that was back when we JUST used the default tokens.

We still use tokens for everything else (money, clues, etc.) but health/san stats it's all dice. I imagine we'd use cash dice too, but we can't reliably scare up that many green d20s and some of the others get tetchy about using "wrong color" dice. *shrug* As a side note, we also use a chesses brick of little D6s for skill checks, since it's easy to need eight, ten, or in one notable case fifteen dice for a check and since those chessex bricks were designed with "I need a million D6s" warhammer players they segued nicely into high power AH checks. :)

Using dice for stamina / sanity sounds interesting, maybe I'll give it a try. However, I'll still use money tokens, to be sure no money is lost or duplicated when transfered between investigators; apart from that, money is not limited, and d20s are more likely to tilt over than a d6 or d8.

I split about 50/50 between using the tokens and using a blue and a red die to track SAN/STA. I think they work about equally well. We almost always pray an 8 player game, so we use a d8 to track successes on the AO. Once we get enough sucesses we remove the token and reset the die. It makes it easy to see where we are and how many doom tokens are left.

I often resort to prayer myself.
