Had a few warm-up games at my FLGS for tomorrows store championships - and took a bit of a spanking
As I've not played any kind of game like this at a competitive level before, can anyone recommend any shady techniques (that I don't already know) to help improve my odds?

If you have to use shady techniques, you deserve to lose.
turrets dont like high amounts of dice per point cost and Phantoms can't de-cloak while ionized

It was this one. After two crushing losses to start off (i was happy to see that the two that beat me ended up a combined 9-1 on the day....), i ended up going 3-2 and ending 10th. Very happy with my first tournament!

Sounds exactly identical to my experience (though mine was loss, victory, victory, loss, victory)
I hope you didn't get crushed in the first round because your opponent wouldn't roll less than two evades and you couldn't roll more than 2 (or any) hits, modifiers be damned. That is truly painful

I ran into Dash + Corran with a Stress Wess list and managed, in the first pass, to force him into a position where 1.) double stress Dash was stuck in range 1 of Wes and 2.) 2 Blue Squadron B-wings, one at range 2 and one at range 1, plus V.I Cracken all had arc on Corran. So, logically, Dash suffers no damage, Corran suffers no damage (despite target-lock + focus on the range 2 B-wing and focus on the other 2) and then Wes gets double tapped to death by Corran (1st shot unmodified, two blank evades, 2nd shot with FCS targetlock, two blank evades).
That's some preordained **** right there 
I have no excuses for my other loss, though. Every game but that one was against 2 ship builds, and I was not ready for a well played 5 ship Corran + mini-swarm. I think I killed two headhunters before he wiped me
