Tournament rules question

By inge.uldahl, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So we were playing a very small casual and local tournament and a couple of questions appeared as we are not too experienced yet:

- First match two players tied (No dead ships) do they score any points for late game tie breakers (Margin of victory)? (Do they both get 100 score or do they simply get 0 score, could not find this in the rules as they specify looser and winner getting 100+- difference. I suspect this means a draw = 100 flat?)

- Also the two players who ended the first round with a draw scored 1 point each, and due to the win/loss ratio of the other players one had to be paired with those who had 3 points while the other had to be paired with those of 0 points. We determined this by a coin toss, is there a "better" way of determining this if they are equal in points and damage difference?

Would be nice to be a bit more prepared should this happen again :)

The last tournament I ran, I gave a draw 1 tournament point and each player had a Margin of Victory of 0. And I would say that your method of the coin toss would have been the fairest way to determine it.

Admittedly, it's a tricky situation that's a bit of a head scratcher.

With a Draw I suspect the MoV should be assigned at 100 points. After all isn't that the way it naturally starts with the point difference increasing the winner's MoV and reducing the loser's? With a tie there is no difference so both should score the same.

If you need to determine a "winner" that would be the player with initiative. At least I believe that's the tie breaker in an elimination round when there is a draw.

Yeah, I suppose a draw MoV of 100 points would be more logical. But, seeing as this was first round, then initiative shouldn't enter the equation, but for an elimination or decider round, then that's the deciding factor.

I only cite them for use it determining who play 'up' and who plays 'down' instead of simply flipping a coin.

During Swiss rounds I would give a Draw 100 MoV points as most logical, I would give both 1 point each for the draw.

As for listing their rank, I would rank the person with initiative higher, so that this person is the one to face the lowest MoV person on 3 points, and the other player would face the highest MoV on 0 points.

For a 100-point game, your MoV is

100 + (total point value of opponent's losses) - (total point value of your losses)

Since the only way to draw is for both of you to lose the same total points' worth, you'll both end up with a MoV of 100. It comes straight from the formula. No special case necessary.

(Another way to double-check: for any given game, your MoV and your opponent's should always add up to 200.)

Thanks for good imput, the initiative based idea makes sense to me. It would have been a more fair way than coin toss I think. (For my example it would have given the same result though).

The MoV really mattered in the tournament mentioned as one of the drawn players from round one managed to end on a draw for first place as well due to 5 points victories vs 3 point modified. So we had first the pairing issue and then two players drawn for first place at tournament end. Good times!
