1st Store Championship Tomorrow!

By Extropia, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So...my 1st SC tomorrow, and my first X-Wing tournament in general. I'm struggling tp pick a final list, so was hoping i could get some advice. You'll see a lot of VI....my local meta likes Phantoms and PS7-9 stuff a great deal. PS 9/10 is worth a lot.

Here's my more succesful ones so far:

1) Chewbacca + Draw Their Fire, Falcon Title, C3-P0, Gunner

Corran Horn+ Veteran Instincts, FCS, R2-D2, Shield Upgrade

=98pts

General idea is to force tough target priority. Corran Hangs out Near chewie when needed. They can either target him (and he is very tanky) or CHewie (who also is). i went for VI on Corran over PtL in order to try to provide some Phantom-proofing.

2) Dash Rendar+ HLC, Outrider, Recon Specialist, PtL, Engine Upgrade

Corran Horn + VI, FCS, R2-D2

=100pts

No huge originality here. Any tweaks people would make?

3) Chiraneau + VI, Ysanne, Rebel Captive, Gunner, Engine Upgrade

Bounty Hunter + Tactician

=98pts

Again not fancy. I didnt want a Deci/Phantom build because there will be a ton of anti-phantom lists there. This is solid, can hit decently hard and is surprisingly slippery.

Last one, promise!

4) Dash + VI, Outrider, HLC, Lando, Experimental Interface

Corran + VI, FCS, R2

=97

So, some things can easily be tweaked on this (most obviously changing VI on Corran into PtL or Predator). I've found this Dash build powerful so far, but it's highly streaky. Bad Lando rolls can result in a lot of paine. I'm not sold on this over a multi-round tournament sicne i cant help but feel that the odds will catch up at some point....On the upside it absolutely murders Phantoms all day long, which is nice.

Which (if any) would people go with? Would you make any tweaks?

Thanks all!

I played against a chewie/corran build that was extremely effective:

Chewbacca + Lone Wolf, C3PO, Lando, Title, EI (54)

Corran +VI, FCS, R2D2, and EU (46)

Chewie can get on average 2-3 evade tokens a round and can lone wolf every blank result which helps against his main weakness: swarms, while corran can boost to help chase and track down phantoms. If you have a chance to try it before the champs I'd recommend it.

Looks like youre going with the current meta which is fine if youre comfortable flying any of those lists. my hangups are:

1. if youre an unseasoned player (which you may be since this is your first tournament?) youre going to be flying list similar to the other players'. consequently, the outcome of each match will be 100% contingent upon your ability to outhink/play your opponent rather than capitalizing on the unique traits of your build

2. the current meta is susceptible to swarms. that sfine if you wont see any but even one swarm has the potential to steamroll a store full of two ship builds

all that said, fly casual and have fun at your first tournament. the nervousness, the overthinking yourself, the dice rolls, its a blast

Thanks guys. I've actually played a ton (at least 100+) games, just not in a formal tournament. I've played all the meta stuff a lot in the flesh and vassal, so i feel at least moderately comfortable with the style. Good point though....it will come down a lot to player skill.

Barabelsftw, that is a mean looking Chewie list. I'm hitting vassal all day for final testing, so i'll throw that into the rotation!

One other thing I forgot to mention about that list. The trick to lone wolf is not letting the range restriction dictate your movement. Even if you don't use it a couple turns in order to get a better board position that's better than the re-rolls.

I have a different take, barabel. Ignore all uses of the term 'meta'. It is pretty much completely misused and is much more of a distraction than a help. You should be working to outfly your opponent whether he or she has a similar squad or not. Too many people place too much stock in what the squad should be accomplishing (they are inanimate objects after all..) instead of what they should be doing with it. The design of a squad is not outside the game, it is an important component of the game. But far less important than your tactics.

I don't think I ever said "meta" in any of my posts. Just adding my input on a squad the OP was thinking about. You're right that tactics and how you play a squad are more important than a good list, but I can't help the OP on his tactics on a forum post. All I can do is offer an observation and an opinion on what I've seen in a list that did very well at a tournament. I based my suggestion on the OP's information that his local tournament contains a lot of high PS ships and Phantoms, and the fact that all his list ideas used 2 ships.

theres a reason a lot of people rush to certain types of builds

and ye sit always comes to player ability which i stated. theres a reason the top ten at worlds are usually the same

My comments were not responding to anyone in particular, but what made me think to say it was cubby's post. Not his in particular, just triggered me to think about all the players I have seen struggle because they were chasing what they thought was a 'meta', when the idea, in this context, is pretty useless and definitely inaccurately applied. Didn't have anything in particular to do with what you said, barabel.

I would run the first list. Swap out DTF for Determination on Chewie, and EU instead of shield on Corran.

Why would you run Determination on Chewie when for the most part he ignores crits? Am I missing something?

Determination lets you discard the damage altogether instead of just flipping it down

Roark buffing chewbacca would be another line of thinking
