Question About Trenloe and Berserker Class

By Extortion, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

One of our players is playing Trenloe as a berserker and in our last quest wanted to use Trenloe's heroic feat in conjunction with the whirlwind skill. I allowed it because the wording of the feat states that it must be used when performing an attack, not an attack action, which would be different. As per monster rules, any skill or ability that allows a figure to roll attack dice counts as an attack whereas an attack action is a basic melee or ranged attack that follows normal rules from the rulebook. Did we get this right?

Also, the feat states that it removes a defence die from the target while the whirlwind skill states that all adjacent monsters are targeted. We decided that each affected monster would have one defence die removed. Also correct?

I commend you for looking for the distinction, but it seems your friend missed a word.

Weird. I just looked at my hero sheet for Trenloe and it distinctly says "Use when you perform an attack, before dice are rolled." I took a picture but I'm having trouble posting it.

When I try to paste the image into the editor, I get a popup saying

There it is. In all its contradictory glory.

Well dang. I'll look at my hero sheets

when I get home.

As will i, as printed you where totally right to let that play out as your hero asked. The effect of whirlwind combined with the feat should effect multiple target individually as far i can see.

Whitewing, text error on the hero card notwithstanding would that work?

I confirm Extortion card text.

Mine also says "Use when you perform an attack, before dice are rolled."

Nothing found on the FAQ/Errata.

Okay so, firstly, if the attack is intended to be an attack action, then clearly it's moot.

So, assuming that it isn't a misprint on your card and that's what is meant, then the answer is that yes, it would work with whirlwind. Since whirlwind declares your target to be all monsters adjacent to you, you would remove 1 die from the dice pools of each monster.

Confirmed. CK version says "attack action," Outcast version just says "attack."

I'm with Whitewing. Since "the target suffers 1 fatigue" means "each target suffers 1 fatigue," "choose and remove 1 defense die from the pool of your target" means "each target."

I also agree with your interpretation Extortion. It says Attack and not Attack action, so its uses extend to any skill which lets you perform an Attack. Another reason why the new Trenloe is one of the most powerful heroes in the game :3

Cool. Glad we got it right. That's a pretty potent combo and despite being the overlord, it's cool to see players find good synergies between hero sheet and class. The thing I complain about is that whirlwind targets adjacent monsters and not adjacent figures :P For 1 fatigue, that's way too useful.

Truthfully, though, the Berserker doesn't have much else going for it in terms of variety. The skills consist primarily of "hit more things," "hit harder," and "hit more things harder.' In that vein, Trenloe definitely has good synergy. I've found he also makes a glorious knight. "Defend" and his +1 shield go well.

Right. With Brute and decent armor, he is very hard to knock down. There is one reason that I love him from an OL perspective. Blinding Speed. Trenloe is the perfect hero to have roll the tests. I've never failed to get the full 4 MP from him and with 2 in the deck, it can (and has multiple times) won quests for me.

Good job playing to the heroes' weaknesses there and remembering that the quest is the important thing, not confronting those nasty heroes. Especially true if you're playing Basic II.

If the heroes have the right weaknesses in their attribute scores I definitely enjoy playing that deck. I just hate it when I'm up against intelligent Warriors (curse you Alys Raine!), strong-willed Mages & observant Healers... then its just an exercise in frustration :P

Eh, the berserker is pretty weak, I don't think it needs a nerf, and I absolutely don't think whirlwind is that strong.

Yeah, I don't think anyone was calling nerf here. The Knight is a vastly superior class. Dealing with Whirlwind is often as simple as just not clumping your critters nearby or tiring the 'zerker out.
