Starfield Playmat Review

And for all those who asked, it is 36" x 36"

Did you measure to within 1/16th of an inch?

Yes. Though if you really want to get technical one side was about a fingernail's length shy of being exactly 36, but not even close to being a 16th shy.

Well, that's good to know. The mats I got from MyGameMats.com (no longer making them) are 36" x 36" to within a 1/16th of an inch, so it's good to hear at least that the FFG mats are 36x36 exact.

This is good news the mats are the correct size. I may be picking these up after all.

Going off the board is such a hugely pivotal thing to happen that I don't want any question about it, especially in a casual game where there isn't a TO to just call it. It isn't going to cause a kerfuffle, I just don't want to deal with any doubt when someone is called out. Even if adult resolutions are reached, a guy called "out" may end up feeling cheated, or vice versa if we don't call him out. I'd just rather it be as sharp and clear as possible.

Come on, were talking about corners of the map. Just how many time since you began playing have you really got a ship in the extreme corner of the map that it would be off the rounded corner? From my side, I count a total of zero time.

And in casual play, I would just let him be in, the game is suppose to be casual anyway.

You don't understand what I am talking about and need to go back and read the last dozen or so posts. I'm talking about the quality of the long straight edges of the map and not the corner, which I already said is a non-issue (mostly because I can't visualize any instance where you would land in it and not be off the board next turn...unless you were Echo I guess)

The OP never mentions rounded edges that I noticed.

I'm aware. I've asked if they are, because their tourney mats are - so it is a reasonable worry. But I've never gotten an answer because people keep talking about (and usually assuming I'm talking about), the rounded corner.

If it helps, I understood what you meant.

GirraffeandZebra, I understood what you meant too. I just don't think it is a big deal in casual games. The other day I played a guy who tends to hit stuff with his hands accidently. Did some of that with his intercepter as he was putting it down near/on an astroid and in the end he "barely missed it." I could have gotten mad and said he hit it, but in the end I just want to fly and shoot at stuff. His hitting or not hitting the astroid had no bearing on what I did. No worries, he didn't do it on purpose and if he did, I would prefer to assume he didn't.

I also think that just stating that off the cover of the mat is off at the beginning of the game should cover your bases.

And here is another person who thinks a rounded edge is a rounded corner.

Sorry, I misunderstood. English is not my native language so the difference between corner and edge slipped.

Ok so I just checked and it's straight. The mat itself is incredibly thin, (Probably the thickness of about 5-7 sheets of paper) so not really any room for them to round the edges to begin with.

Most serious players I know already own mats from other companies, FF was late on the ball with this one

True, but my GF-9 Frozen Planet mat IS starting to show some pretty heavy scuffing. Fortunately (or unfortunately) I'll probably be dumping money into S&V for some time before I worry about a new mat. However, if I do get a FFG mat, I'd be inclined to buy a plain cardboard postal tube to transport it it rather than the beautiful, but less than innocuous box it comes in.

Looks good not sure what the big deal is about the corners...lol I use a 3x3 piece of felt as my playmat.

Many thanks!

So yeah, that ghost at 7:30 is going to give me nightmares.

Just got my Deathstar and starfield mats. The video just can't do them justice, the Death Star mat is beautiful. Really impressive quality.

I just bought the starfield playmat and while the quality is nice our group does not like it at all. the bottom of the mat is amazing, it will not move at all. The top of the mat is terrible, it is slippery. The ships move around more than on any other mat we have ever used. It is very frustrating to play on. If you like your ships moving around a lot then this is the mat for you, if not then you might want to save the $40 and look elsewhere... Also, if you have solutions on how to make your ships "stick" please let me know so I can try something to make this mat useful.

I won one of the FFG Death Star mats last weekend.

It is literally the coolest / best mat I have played on. The way the ships and dice look on it is better than I ever expected. The grip from mat to table is really good, unlike my vinyl mat, and the ship to mm at grip is very good as well. Rarely do my ships get bumped now.

I really recommend picking one up, especially the Death Star one.

I must add, my ship bases have a square of Silly Winks Foam glued to the bottom. This Mat + Foam in bases = no movement.

Did I mention the mats look really good? Every time i walk by my gaming table I just want to play more and more X Wing on it.
