Rexlar vs determination and leebo

By cjnj193, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello all, was just curious about how these cards work together. Seeing as the 2 cards say "dealt" faceup damage is declared not affected by them?

More Rexlar fun. Rexlar's ability triggers after damage cards have already been dealt. The order basically goes

1) Uncancelled damage cards are dealt.

2) if any uncancelled crits occured, Leebo kicks in, and then can determination away an Pilot Crits he chooses

3) Rexlar can trigger

Since Rexlar's ability isn't dealing new cards, just flipping existing ones face up, neither Leebo nor Determination kicks in at this point. So if for example Leebo suffered an uncanceled Hit, Hit, Crit:

1) Leebo draws two crits, Direct Hit and Blinded Pilot

2) He chooses Blinded Pilot, the Direct Hit gets discarded, then Determination throws away Blinded Pilot

3) At the end of damage resolution, Leebo has 2 facedown damage cards

4) Rexlar triggers, both facedown hits are flipped up, revealing Injured Pilot and Direct Hit, both of which stick because the activation window for Leebo and Determination have already passed

The same goes for Chewbacca; His ability triggers on the dealing of the damage card, and Rexlar triggers after, so cards he flips faceup stick because the window for Chewbacca's ability already passed.

Wow that is quite a lot of fun there, will have to try it

I believe the order would be:

1. Leebo attacked and suffers damage in excess of Shield tokens.

2. If any of them are being dealt Face-up then Leebo triggers and draws another choosing one to go forward and immediately discarding the other.

3. If a face-up Pilot card is now coming in and the ship has Determination that card is also discarded.

4. The cards land on the ship.

5. NOW, Rexler can trigger and turn the ones just dealt face up.

I guess this is also what Otacon said although I wasn't reading carefully enough and thought he was talking about the same cards both times with a something Pilot card and Direct Hit being mentioned both times.

Rexler is a sneaky devil.

Went ahead and updated my post to clarify it a bit more. And yeah, he is. Flipping up 4 crits on a Determination Chewbacca is a lot of fun, on the rare occasion it happens.

With Rexler it is better just to say that he flips card up as his ability has nothing to do with [kaboom] results. In some cases the end result is the same but how you get there is very important.

wait, so determination also works on chewie? I thought he flips all crits from dice period, didn't think there was a time for determination to go off

Chewbacca and Determination both read "When you are dealt a faceup damage card", so since they both have the same trigger you get to decide which resolves. So any non-Pilot crits, you flip face down with Chewbacca, and any Pilot crits you discard with Determination. That's been my understanding, and the one we've used locally anyway.

Oh yes. Determination even works on Chewbacca when the cards are dealt face-up. In almost all cases you'll have Determination look at the card and decide what to do with it before you have Chewie's ability look at the card.

Now I will warn you that if you set up the Draw Their Fire + Determination combo (currently possible on the A-Wing but wait) would let you suffer another ship's [kaboom] result and if that results in a face-up pilot damage card it will discard it BUT you will need to decide to use DtF long before you know what card you would be drawing. IF you could do this with Chewie it would be amazing but an A-Wing just isn't likely to see face-up cards and survive them long.

Assuming we're talking about Chewbacca the pilot (which it sounds like, since the crew discards rather than flipping), he flips ALL face-up cards down. There's no limitation on the type of crit. Determination on Chewie is redundant.

No it isn't. The pilot ability and determination both resolve. Chewbacca chooses to resolve determination first and his pilot ability second. Determination discards the damage card. After that there is nothing left for the pilot ability to do.

Whoops - heh... Shows how often I see Determination in play ;) Completely forgot that Determination discards the damage completely. My apologies.

Depending on where you are that could have been some late posting to blame.

If Determination only flipped dealt Pilot cards face down I don't think anyone would say it's worth its point. The big ships may get to use it on occasion but how often does it get used on a small ship?
