Book depository has new X-Wing stock

By ionic, in X-Wing

I thought this whole **** thread was a thinly veiled guise to avoid some sort of advertisement ban, but lo! There is a site with that name...

Another very positive vote for The Book Depository's native website. Especially for those of us marooned in the antipodes.

Their prices include postage and displayed in AUD - so very easy to work out what you're getting and mostly unbelievably fast delivery for the distances involved. Last year I was able to pick up both the Aces packs for a smidgen over AUD$30 each - bargain compared to store prices here.

I've often got excited by the incredibly cheap prices you pay for 'discounted' X-Wing stuff on some US gaming websites, thrown a bunch of stuff in the virtual cart, then calculated the shipping to find it kicked up the overall cost of the order by anywhere from 30-100%, hence no longer becoming economical.

I have noted with the declining Aussie dollar our local online distributors' prices are now roughly on par with the online price checking I've been doing for preordering my Scum & Villainy and Armada stuff.

I've used Book depository (through amazon) once before just after black friday 2014. Decimators were new out and i hadn't pre-ordered so lost out at my FLGS. got 2x decimators for £18 each (with 2x delivery charges of £3-4). Annoying to have to pay delivery charges per item but still worked out at a decent price. Had no issues with delivery. I have a couple of other online retailers i've used a lot so book depository won't be my default choice but i will use them again if required...

I'm not shopping at BD any more - then label things as in stock before anyone else does, but then coincidentally they dispatch them a few days later on the same day everyone else gets them.

Now I'm not saying they lie about having things in stock, but... ok I am.

I'm trying out Element Games now - cheap prices and they make a point of claiming not to do the above. They've also reserved some Tarot Card Sleeves for my Armada pre-order. I know some shops don't do that, meaning even though they have something in stock, and you've paid for it, they may well be out of stock when the rest of your pre-order becomes available.

Sticking with Amazon for the Raider thouh, just in case they mess the price up between now and release!

I got some things through element games so I can vouch for them. Best prices in UK for x-wing is chaos cards usually. I have occasionally found good deals elsewhere but CC is what I use as a good benchmark for prices. The best steal I got so far was slave-1 and falcon for £19.99 each free delivery from 365games a few weeks ago before these ships restocked anywhere else.

I sell on Amazon market there is no function for third party sellers to combine postage, worse you can only set one price for postage unlike eBay that let you set the price individually for each item.

Blame Amazon for that not book depository.

Dang, what's MSRP across the pond? £19.99 would be about $29.99*, which is the MSRP over here. (So, hardly a "steal" in my mind. Could be my miserly Scottish ancestry, though.)

*Right? I'm guesstimating here...

MARP for Slave 1 over here is £24.99

That's disgusting. Do they specify there are no upgrade cards, or did you learn that the hard way?

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to link to the ebay page, so instead I'll just provide an example.

Listing: Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures - Waves 1-5 (NEW Models - No Upgrade Cards)

Choose Decimator from the dropdown, price is £18.99 delivery £3.49.

Heavily discounted NEW X-Wing Miniatures Models.
NO UPGRADE CARDS INCLUDED (sold separately)

Please read carefully - Listing does include:
Model: YES

Cardboard Tokens: YES (though not bomb tokens)

Pilot Cards: YES
Manoeuvre Wheel: YES
Upgrade/Skill Cards: NO
Questions - please get in touch
Straight from their page. I don't want to derail the topic so I'll leave it there.
OT: I actually ordered one or two items from Book Depositary via their Amazon store when they showed a great price with free prime delivery. As with all Amazon marketplace sellers, the listings on Amazon rarely match with their own store prices - I believe it was 20% more expensive listed on their website.
When I want something I have to play this game of checking about 15 websites I've bookmarked several times a day since the prices seem to fluctuate significantly even within a day (especially true of Amazon).

Uh, I don't really see the offensive scam, here. They emphasize, clearly, twice, once IN ALL CAPS!!! and once in chart form with Please Read Carefully! bolded above it, that there are no upgrade cards included.

It is entirely arguable how worthwhile a purchase like this would be. But to call this a grievance? Gonna have to respectfully disagree.

Condition:

New: A brand-new, unused, unopened and undamaged item

If you can't see how that is a fraudulent listing them I don't know what to tell you.

In no galaxy is a product new when it has been cut open and items removed. Should be listed as used. Even like new isn't good enough because it does not contain all the items a new version would ship with.

EDIT: The part in brackets in the heading was not originally there, it just said NEW at the front. I assume this change was made after my first complaint.

Ah! I live and learn... (that system sucks for the third party sellers...:-/)

I don't want people to think i'm down on BD, as i said the overall price was still reasonable from my point of view (and the service was hiccup-free) so no complaints. As i said-i will use them again if required...

Yeah it really messes with your pricing because you have to set a postage that will cover most of your stuff and then make up for small items having a P&P of say £4 by making them really cheap so you see it for £2 and then there is the P&P for twice that.

Now that's interesting, I always thought it was a bit dodgy seeing items like that (super cheap they you pay triple the price in postage).

It's not done to trick people it's done because heavier items will lose you money if you set prices to cover the lightest items.

I've got some items for 1 pence and i'm making the profit from the postage it's messed up but beyond my control.

That seems totally silly. Any idea what Amazon's motive is?

Does it actually make a big difference? Presumably the couriers have a minimum price regardless of weight and size, just for the handling?

I JUST ordered 3 Y-Wings and a Tie Advanced from Book Depository. I'll report how fast (or slow) they arrived.

UPDATE... I received an email from Book Depository saying my order has "Dispatched." And checking with my account on their website that is indeed the current status of the order from my previous post.

Looking on their website, with me being in the USA I should expect delivery to appear on my doorstep in 5-8 business days from being "dispatched." Which would mean sometime between Feb 24th to the 27th.

I can say that on the same day that I placed this order with Book Depository, I also placed an order with Team Covenant as well as an order with Unbeatable Sale (through Newegg.com).... both of those orders arrived yesterday via USPS. So Book Depository certainly takes a while to arrive, but apparently they are (so far) making it seem as though they had the product IN STOCK.

I'll continue to update if I receive further update from BD or when I received the product in my hands.

UPDATE:

The Book Depository order arrived on Feb 24th.

I am based here in Australia.

On 25 Feb 2015 (their server details) placed an order for the following:

  • Lambda-Class Shuttle Expansion Pack
  • Tantive IV Expansion Pack
  • VT-49 Decimator Expansion Pack

Dispatched on 27 Feb 15

Will post when shipment arrives.

Cheers!

All sold out at the Australian website...I missed out

Guys, Book Depository isn't fast so why the countdowns and updates?

It has good prices and free shipping, can't we just leave it at that. You'll get good prices but you'll wait a bit longer. If you want it fast I would shop somewhere else. Discounts for me in New Zealand average about 30-40% off retail price so speed doesn't really matter (even then it is usually less than two weeks).

That being said, Scum prices aren't that good, so I'll likely buy it locally. I was lucky to get myself set up in X-wing on the cheap through BD, but now I tend to buy from local stockists to keep them in business.

And CliveDuckmann were you trying to buy Scum? They will be back in stock sooner or later, just put it on your watch list and get them to notify you when it is back in stock. Scum has been in and out recently, though Most Wanted has not come back yet as far as I can tell. Sometimes the stock goes in minutes, other times it doesn't. The vagaries of buying off BD.

As a followup I agree with ID XT concerning shipment vs price. BD had very good prices thus being the main reason why I purchased from them. Although I try to support my local game shop why pay A$135 for the Tantive and A$60 for the Decimator when I can pay A$83 and A$39 through BD - $74 in savings - (only $3 difference for the Lambda).

I will probably use them more as well if they have very competitive prices.

I am posting ordering, shipment and receipt dates for people so they can make their own judgement on whether they may use BD.

Cheers!

I had a Tie Defender turn up rather squashed from BD. I sent an email and some pictures, and had a replacement in less than a week to Australia.

Can't fault that sort of customer service.

Did you fix it? Or does the derpfender now have a brother?

It's not the slowness of BD that bothers me, it's the implied dishonesty. When they say they've got something in stock before anyone else does, but don't dispatch it any earlier, that suggests they were lying about it being in stock.

Follow-up - Tantive turned up exactly one week after ordering and the second box turned up 13 days after ordering. Cannot complain about shipping times and have ordered a second batch of ships. Probably greatest delay times actually occur once the package is received and processed in Australia as well...

Cheers!
