List Feedback Please

By lynnferd, in X-Wing

Back when wave 4 came out I got 2 Z-95s, 2 E-wings, 2 Phantoms, and 1 Defender. Just the other day I realized that I have never used my Defender. So I proceeded to put a list together with it. Any feedback on how you think it would do would be great.

  • Rexler Brath + Lone Wolf + Heavy Laser Canon (46)
  • Howlrunner (18)
  • Academy Pilot (12)
  • Academy Pilot (12)

I figured I can setup with the regular TIEs together and the Defender off by itself to try to flank.

It's OK, but the problem is Rexlar's ability requires two turns to set up (or Squad Leader, or a shuttle to give him TL), because he needs a dice modifier to have a reasonable chance of causing damage, and he wants the focus to turn them into psuedo-crits.

Vessery is much better imo as he has a built in Fire Control. He just needs to be paired with a shuttle with Fire Control, a Phantom with Fire Control, or someone who never uses their TL. (Or an unreleased TIE/x1 with ATC).

I feel the miniswarm would work better with a Deci (Even a blank one), than with a TIE/D.

Agreed on Vessery. As long as you know the target you are gonna go after will have a TL on them from another friendly you can do a focus action and then gain a TL immediately after the dice are rolled, which can then be used to mod those same dice. So Vessery with a HLC and say VI can hang back as Whisper with FCS gets close attacks gains a TL and then Vess can fire next knowing he'll get a TL to mod those dice.

Lone Wolf isn't enough of a dice modifier?

I flew Rexler + LW + Stealth + HLC once. It was a lot of fun. He eats decimators for breakfast.

Lone wolf is great but harder to keep yourself out of range of friendlies than it seems especially if running it with a mini swarm that's a lot of friendlies to stay away from

There is also a whole sub-forum for this kind of thread, too.

1. Lone Wolf is a modifier (and a pretty good one)

2. The chance of rolling 3 natural hits/crits is 1/8 and 4 hits/crits is 1/16 of course these numbers go up with a reroll so a single focus often times will be enough to use his ability about 25ish% of the time.

Here's my deal: I don't like Lone Wolf on lists with more than a couple ships and especially on a defender (or large base ship). Defender cannot slow roll (1 straight) and invariably moves towards combat which is where the rest of your ships tend to be as well. All it takes is 1 lousy TIE to get in there and the upgrade is useless. I'm not saying it can't be done, but that it does create limits, particularly with a ship like the Defender that tends to move in large chunks. If you can, I'd ditch it for Predator and not worry about it, but that makes you a point over with a Howl/mini-swarm.

FWIW, I am basing this largely upon using Lone Wolf with Rexler in my last tournament, where he ran with 3 Black Squadron pilots. Lone Wolf got vetoed more than I cared for.
