Stacking Ship Attachments

By Agatheron, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I think I've been hit with a flurry of the stupids lately... or at least a desire to ask really stupid questions. So here goes:

With most ship attachments, there does not seem to be an specific limit that more than one of the same attachment type can be installed on a given vessel, as long as the ship has the hardpoint room for it. Specifically, multiple weapons can be installed as long as hardpoints are available. But what about something like the ion turbine upgrade to improve a ship's base speed... is it possible (never mind reasonable) to install more than one of these on a ship to improve its straight-line speed? The latter specifically doesn't have any modifications available to further improve speed once installed, so I guess the question is can they be stacked? Sure, it's a waste of hardpoints, and system strain is really going to suck... but you can turn your freighter into a sublight dragster :)

Part of this comes out of GM Hooly's awesome ship dashboard... wondering how possible it could be for one to actually achieve "plaid" on the speed counter :)

I would say, no you cannot put the Ion engines on the ship more than once. It comes from the talents and maneuvers that boost top speed temporarily. For example, the A-wing with High Output Ion Turbines and Supreme Full Throttle in action has a top speed of 9. It may not be plaid, but it's at least ludicrous.

See the Developer Answered Questions thread. I asked this question, and the answer is "no" on duplication.

Thanks HappyDaze. Intuition told me that this question had already been answered, but I couldn't remember where.

Case closed. :)

Vehicle Attachments

Question asked by HappyDaze :

Can starships have multiple installations of Attachments like Enhanced Carbon-Durasteel Armor or High-Output Ion Turbine?

Answered by Sam Stewart :

Generally, no, they can only benefit from one of each type of attachment. Exceptions may be made for attachments such as weapons, however.

Got here via a google search, so the link is for further reference.

Actually, not to difficult to 'go plaid'.

A-wing or t-wing can do it with moder and artisan adding 2 hp each. Take Overcharged Ion Engines and High Output Ion Engines. Tack on Supreme Full Throttle and Spd 10/Plaid you go.

And what about two different attachments that partly overlap in the way they work. For example Encrypted Computer prevents enemy slicing of your ship computer (test upgrade and black dice), while Security Measures upgrades enemy skulldugery AND computer test to unautorised access to the Ship - (Upgraded mag-locks. decoy control panels. reinforced hatches, and enhanced security protocols can ensure that a ship goes undisturbed while at port) . Does it mean that when I have both attachments on my ship, enemy test to slice my ship computer will be upgraded by both of them or only by one? We assume here that the enemy uses his computer skill for either slicing or forced entry.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Sort of... I'd say it would stack, but those examples don't actually overlap.

Computers/Skulduggery to gain entry into the vehicle probably doesn't actually involve slicing (or "hacking") into the ship's computer. Whereas slicing the ship's computer rarely would have anything to do with actually trying to break into the ship.

The language here is very specific, rather than being simply "offensive Computers checks directed at the ship" or something.

As GM, I would rule that there is no overlap. If you are slicing the ship's computer, Encrypted Computer applies. If you aren't slicing the ship and are simply trying to break in, then Security Measures applies.

Narrative reasoning for this is that perhaps the ship is utterly impregnable from the outside, but a clever slicer can get into the system and trick the ship from the inside because of a lack of protection of the ship's computer functions. Alternatively, perhaps the ship has impregnable computer systems, but the locks are rather simple, and can easily be tricked by someone with the know-how (through Computers or Skulduggery, which would often be used rather interchangeably).
