Where are the Epic scale tournaments?

warhammer is failing because of the company draining its gamers dry of their cash for game pieces that last a turn or 2 on the table. GW really needs to rethink their marketing strategy. Also the codex hammer effect, there is no balance in 40K. a new codex comes out and that army lights it up, they don't even try to balance **** anymore.

sorry, I have been playing 40k since the 80's and that game has been a huge part of my life and where I spent my money over that time. I hate that they have made me hate something I once loved. sorry sore spot

Same here but I did it all for ten years and worked as a important Miniatures Guy (LOL!) at a good game store for half that time in it.

Sold it all and moved out of the state in the end.

:o:rolleyes::huh:

Gimmie my beloved little STAR WARS & STAR TREK space ships!

I ran an Epic tournament at our FLGS last fall to do something different and we had 10-12 players (which is about normal for our non-FFG events). We did three rounds and it went fine. The biggest issue for most was that they want an Imperial huge ship (soon to be solved).

I have played a lot of Epic games. Once you're used to the format they don't take that much linger than a normal match (our tourney had 2 hour time slots and not a single game went over 90 minutes) because once the shooting starts, ships die VERY quickly to focused fire. I'll keep the two hour slots for Epic tourneys...we have loads of players that used to play Warhammer Fantasy tournaments, so 3-4 two hour games in one day is no big deal to us.

It is a fun format and will only get better with the release of the Raider.

The two hour time limit sounds pretty reasonable. My experience has also been that once you start engaging things die really fast as well. With 15 minutes between rounds and a decent lunch break that is four rounds in a day. Maybe three rounds of swiss followed by a top two finish faceoff.

I have also noticed that team games move even faster. Even at 400 points per side. I am eagerly looking forward to the epic Imperial release to give some much needed boost to epic. Also only slightly less excited to see what they release for Scum and Villainy.

I don't want a tournament play for Epic. I like Epic as just a fun game between friends. Once you start adding in tournaments, you get all the min/maxing and it will just suck the fun out of it.

What about a campaign model tournament where Epic comes into play only in a late round?

For example, something like this:

- 3 round tournament (can add a finals bracket or something if desired)

- Each player plans a 400-point list (but you don't have to have all 400 points worth of ships, as you'll see). Unique ships and cards can only appear on the overall list once; other ships and cards may be duplicated but can't be played together unless you have enough ships and cards to have all duplicates on the board at once.

- Round 1: 100 point standard game with a list pulled from the 400 point list. Winner gains 10 points extra to spend in round 3. Any ships/cards lost in this round cannot be used in subsequent rounds.

- Round 2: 100 point standard game with a list pulled from the 400 point list (minus any losses from Round 1). Winner gains 10 points extra to spend in round 3. Any ships/cards lost in this round cannot be used in subsequent rounds.

- Round 3: 200 point Epic round with a list drawn from the 400 point list (minus losses from rounds 1 and 2). Players may gain +10 or +20 points to add to their list depending upon wins in earlier rounds. (When the Raider releases, require at least 1 Epic point to be played during this round)

Interest in epic will increase once the raider is releases...not giving the empire a huge ship (we are known do our huge ships!!) Was a major misstep...the cr90 should have been cross faction.

I agree with a number of the statements above that epic and tournaments may not be the most compatible styles of play.

Trust me, I really want to do epic play. I want Huge ships on the battlefield, because they're awesome. Also, I have faith that epic will get more play with the Raider coming out. However, I don't think I'd enjoy them as much in a tournament setting.

With huge ships, I want more narrative and a sense of why a battle is taking place. A tournament is more about the competition than the story.

Not to mention the fact that the Rebs have two large ships... Like com'on man, is it too much to ask for a Star Destroyer lol?

To be fair, one is a big floating unarmed target.

IMHO the lovely Space Whale is the more cost effective of the two. Sure, it doesn't have guns, but its ability to run things over, allows it to herd your enemy somewhat and it's a pretty effective booster.

But you bought the big defenseless space whale didn't you, I know I did haha.

I am thinking of buying another two... after another decimator, a whole bunch of Mel's customs, another phantom, maybe another few Y or X-wings to custom paint...

In my experience it's more cost effective and just more effective in general...having a raider around will change that I think...

I've had great results with using the lowly space whale with slicer tools, in conjunction with the panic attack list. B-Wings with Tactician and Y-Wings using mix of R3-A2 and Ion to herd people into the flight path. Beautiful. :) Then the slicers just stick it too them. :)
