Where are the Epic scale tournaments?

By Coshuda, in X-Wing

Hey everyone,

I have been waiting and waiting but am just not seeing anything for Epic Scale tournaments. FF makes this lovely PDF with rules and formats and nothing comes of it. Now I understand a big part of this has been the one sided nature of huge ships, but with that fixing to change let's show Epic some love!

I would love to see some more epic play, particularly for tournaments. Which also had me thinking, all the lovely alternate art promos they could make. The Tantive IV with movie stills. So beautiful.

So is my area just lacking in this or have you all seen/participated in some competitive epic play? Let me know your thoughts, along with what some brainstorming for what some cool promotional goodies could be.

one ROUND of epic takes like four hours!! This would be a tournament of days!

I'm pretty sure the tournament rules limit game time to 2.5-3 hours. You could likely play 3 games in a day, which does not seem unreasonable.

As far as rounds go, my group usually has about 20 minute rounds when everyone is focused on the game. Which is precisely what we should expect to see in a tournament.

you do understand that even with a limit of 3 hours. many games probably won't finish.

second, with a 3 hour game and 300 pts of stuff you need approx an hour to set up. standard set up time is maybe 10 to 15 minutes. it gets exacerbated with more stuff. also rearranging to a new match up will take time, its not like as simple of a pack up and move as 100 pts.

not that i wouldnt love to see epic. its just a logistical nightmare. honestly, i think 75 minutes for 1 round of 100pt is a nightmare.

Raider ain't out yet...

Plus, how many people will be attending? I mean, look at Warhammer: Diskwars and the end of Organized Play for that game: too few people interested. Not saying it won't be good to see epic tournaments; but there's also quite a monetary investment from the organizer to have such events running. Extended gameplay implies less matches / day, and with less people involved in epic than in normal x-wing it's possibly something not convenient

it could be doable in a league setting. 4 weeks of 1 battle per afternoon/evening/night

We had one such tournament in Poland. It was 2 day event. First day had 3 battles, and second had 2. Battles were played for 2,5 h.

It was Team Epic so 2 players teams 200 p. per player. There were 5 teams total. I'm not sure but I think that only one of my 4 battles ended with time, and it had big points difference.

now TEAM EPIC. THERES something I could really get behind and love. Having to work together?

Communicative and "Comms-Jammed" quiet modes? Awesome.

200 points is much more doable.

2.5 hours, over 2 days, or two weekly-meetings. two rounds a day. 5 hours + 1 hour set-up/cleanup time.

From what I understood the lack of epic tournaments is deliberate. The mechanics and ships are all worked out in the context of 100 point tournaments, and so at higher point levels balance starts suffering. Now, this doesn't matter in friendly games, which is what Epic is for, having fun with your mates with ridiculous numbers of ships or daftly sized vessels.

Also, for a tournament there is the time thing that other people have mentioned... FFG does seem to have focussed tournament play to a certain length of game quite well.

I played in two Team Epic tournaments, one with 10 teams (3/4 rounds, can't remember), one with 8 teams/3 rounds. Both were 150pts per teammate, to reduce playtime. We had 2 hours for the first game, to get settled in, 1.5 hrs for the rest.

The first had very skewed rules with regards to modified wins, basically any difference under 24 points was a draw (kinda silly). Predictably, most games ended in draws, but it gave us a clear winner. Only the winners brought a transport.

The second was normal, the only difference being in points. 3 teams had the Tantive, we had a transport.

warhammer is failing because of the company draining its gamers dry of their cash for game pieces that last a turn or 2 on the table. GW really needs to rethink their marketing strategy. Also the codex hammer effect, there is no balance in 40K. a new codex comes out and that army lights it up, they don't even try to balance **** anymore.

sorry, I have been playing 40k since the 80's and that game has been a huge part of my life and where I spent my money over that time. I hate that they have made me hate something I once loved. sorry sore spot

Not so sure if this answer was in response to my post; in case sorry. I agree with you about GW's behaviour, but I was talking about how OP for Warhammer: Diskwars (which is an FFG game) was recently discontinued

In one of the designer interviews (Scum and Villainy podcast, I think) they said they know it can be hard to run epic tournaments, but if there is enough interest there may be epic format at worlds. I say let's show some interest!

We've had one epic event in my area, and it was a fan-made Hoth battle including each of the named transports. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend.

To be fair GW are getting better of late with toning down the more recent codexes. Though i hate the unbound and the ridiculous combos that exist.

It would probably go faster if there was a requirement to use at least one huge ship (which isn't feasible yet).

How I would set up Tournaments would be rather than individuals it'd be a 2-4 man team thing only, and only teams could participate, and tourneys would be a 3 weekend deal.

Epic tournaments are on the boat still.

It appears, Coshuda, that you are now in charge of setting up an Epic tournament in your area.

It could be done at a multi-day event. I know if NOVA Open had Epic, I would drop out of the Infinity ITS for it.

That would appear to be the case. lol

That is kind of my thought on the matter. My experience with local venues is that they don't want to host epic because they don't think there will be enough interest. Then when I talk to players they tell me that since there are no events for epic they are that interested in it. It seems to be a circular problem...

Well, I for one am starting to push epic in my area. Our game nights are full up on Star Wars now, with week 1 X-wing, week 2 Imperial Assault skirmish, week 3 Star Wars: The Card Game, and week 4 Imperial Assault campaign. One day of X-wing is not enough!!! I don't play the card game, and I am just not as in love with Imperial Assault Skirmish as I am with X-wing, so I am going to try to start an X-wing Epic night for those (like me) who don't play the LCG or Imperial Assault.

I ran an Epic tournament at our FLGS last fall to do something different and we had 10-12 players (which is about normal for our non-FFG events). We did three rounds and it went fine. The biggest issue for most was that they want an Imperial huge ship (soon to be solved).

I have played a lot of Epic games. Once you're used to the format they don't take that much linger than a normal match (our tourney had 2 hour time slots and not a single game went over 90 minutes) because once the shooting starts, ships die VERY quickly to focused fire. I'll keep the two hour slots for Epic tourneys...we have loads of players that used to play Warhammer Fantasy tournaments, so 3-4 two hour games in one day is no big deal to us.

It is a fun format and will only get better with the release of the Raider.

Getting people to play an Epic game is already such a pain in the ass that trying to make a tournament out of it simply isn't possible. Everyone in my area has this wierd schedule where they are never are free on Sundays or any other day before 6 PM, so planning something for Sunday at noon simply isn't feasible. We can't even play 75 minute rounds.

The only way to make an Epic game day feasible is to play it as one huge game. 500 points each side, each player comes up with roughly a 100 point list, with one person controlling the epic ship on either side. The more people you have to move the ships and put together ships on their own the less time it will take to setup and play.

I suggested once that we sacrifice one Friday tournament and play one big epic game instead and my idea was immediately shot down. *insert obligatory comment about dumb turret/phantom meta here*
