Hello all. My son wants to play a psyker. His WP is 44. Does this mean he gets to chose 22 powers? He also choose to be a telekin if that matters. Anyway were in the middle of character creation so help would be appreciated.
Need help with psyker powers
Hello all. My son wants to play a psyker. His WP is 44. Does this mean he gets to chose 22 powers? He also choose to be a telekin if that matters. Anyway were in the middle of character creation so help would be appreciated.
You are allowed to choose up to half your Willpower BONUS per Psy Rating.
If his Willpower is 44, then his Willpower Bonus is 4 (your bonus is the 10's digit of the characteristic). So he'd start with 2 powers.
Edited by ColAranaOk thanks that makes more sense. I thought it was weird that he'd have 20 + powers.lol
Another question. When does he get to pick another power from the telekinetics section?
He does not actually get to pick Telekinetic Powers at the start of the game.
At Psy Ratings 1 and 2, a Psyker can only select Minor Powers.
At Psy Rating 3, they may choose a discipline and may then gain Psychic Powers from that discipline (starting with one, as they take the new Discipline).
At every Psy Rating thereafter, a Psyker may choose to either select a new Discipline and gain one new power from that discipline, or they may choose up to half their Willpower Bonus in Psychic Powers from a discipline they already have.
Psykers may also take the "Psychic Power" advance, available as listed, to gain a power in any Discipline which they are proficient in.
----
What I would assume is in your case, the Psyker will not actually gain Telekinetic powers until Rank 4 (though he can still have telekinetic-esque powers like Spectral Hands from the Minor Psychic Power table). At Rank 4, he may get the Psy Rating 3 Advance, and choose the Telekinesis discipline, and will then gain one power of his choice in it, and can then gain more powers thereafter.
Edited by ColAranaThanks that makes a lot more sense. Here's another question. For starting gear on pg.26 it says you can have a book of saints, deck of cards, psy-focus or sanctioning brand. Do you pick one and it acts as your psy-focus for the purposes of using the invocation skill?
Before I answer your inquiry, Imperial Psykers receive of the following during Character Creation:
- Axe or Sword
- Staff
- Compact Stub Revolver or Compact Las Pistol, with the appropriate ammunition
- Knife (flavored as a psykana mercy blade)
- Quilted Vest
- Poor Quality Clothing (flavored as a tatty robe)
- Book of Imperial Saints or Deck of Cards or Dice
- Psy-Focus
- Sanctioning Brand
The locations of the "or"s and commas are important; both narratively and mechanically, the Sanctioning Brand is non-negotiable 1 .
Psy-Focuses can really be anything, as long as the character is mentally and psychically invested in one. I like to think of them as self-hypnosis/meditation aids that help mute external distractions, akin to staring into a flame, but your mileage may vary. Most listed examples are small (dare I say, random) trinkets that would not normally have other mechanical uses, such as scraps of bone, rock, or metal. A memento, such as a vial of a deceased loved one's blood, may also serve as an appropriate Psy-Focus. The possibilties are endless, though weapon-based Psy-Focuses are generally excluded 2 .
1 Unsanctioned/non-Imperial Psykers exist, but are another matter entirely.
2 "Force" weapons, specifically staves, can act as Psy-Focuses.
Edited by AsymptomaticSo anyone of these: Book of Imperial Saints or Deck of Cards or Dice...is the supposed to be the Psy-Focus? If so he'll probably want the deck of cards. If not what do the above items do?
The granted Psy-Focus is, at least in my eyes, a separate item, but I do not have a problem overlapping it with one of the other items. I do not believe there are any explicit mechanical uses for those other items though. The deck of cards and dice could be used as divination mediums or for parlor tricks, while the book may assist in shouting
obscenities
hymns and litanies at the character's enemies. Basically, they are "fluff" items that help define a character without using dice.
Ok I get it now. Much appreciated. :-)
