Imperial version of "Rebel" ship(s)

By OrangeCat, in Star Wars: Armada

I know, I know. Because of the end of The Empire Strikes Back, my favorite of the Star Wars movies, the Nebulon-B escort frigate is an iconic Rebel ship.

However, in the EU Star Wars material, the Neb-B is an Imperial ship used by the Empire as an anti-piracy warship. I bet a LOT of you have played the X-wing/TIE Fighter computer game series where this ship is a staple, or played the old D6 RPG where the Victory SD and the Nebulon-Bs hangar bay were first mentioned.

I know that Armada is going to be play-tested and balanced towards tournament play, but who wants to see an "Imperial" FFG variant card? I know that in casual play, you can mix and match as much as you want. But I really, REALLY want to throw one of these into a flight of two Victory Class Star Destroyers in a tournament.

With a flight of TIEs in its belly. *Pew-pew-pew*

A Nebulon-B2 frigate is heavily involved in a lot of the TIE Fighter campaign. I am hoping it is released as an Imperial ship in a later wave, with some appropriate upgrade cards inspired by the game. That way, each side has their own version.

FFG has pulled several ideas from the video games already, and with Scum & Villainy in XWM, they have also demonstrated the possibility for a ship to be used by multiple factions. So I think there is a decent chance that both sides will have some sort of Nebulon-B representation... eventually.

This has been discussed at length before. The general consensus was that it'd be awesome, but is highly unlikely to ever be official. Houserules only :)

Thanks guys. I can hope.

This is a world with SCUM Y-wings after all.

Yep, it's certainly not impossible. For balance and "faction identity" purposes though, it just seems unlikely.

No big deal though....for friendlies and scenarios i'll be using them cross-faction regardless :)

Honestly I'd prefer if there was no ship-sharing between factions for the 'official' rules. I prefer factions with unique identifies rather than a list of generic ships + a few unique to each faction.

I get that Neb-Bs were actually by and large Imp ships, but keeping them Rebel only seems to benefit the longevity of Armada more.

Of course House Rules will allow you to do whatever you want.

Scum and Villainy also shows that FFG implemented cross-faction ships only with third faction. So if Armada receive someday third faction, then we would get some cross-faction ships. Most likely CSA fleet with cross-faction VSDs (imps), Dreadnoughts (imps), Marauder corvettes (that could be part of rebel fleet too), also they could use Z-95 and Y-wings as well as the rebels. Possible Hapes Consortium with X-wings.

I concur with Extropia, above. FFG will (and probably should) put the marketing interests above the faithfulness to the gameworld first - in this instance.

The thing is, people want to play on a level playing field, whereas the galactic civil was is anything but a level playing field. So, something's gotta give, and the customer is always right.

FFG could put out some titles that have at the top "This changes the faction of this ship to Imperial" I suppose. Although I agree in the main with line that the fleets have been carefully balanced against one another.

But on the other hand, Priam and Warspite.

I suppose if it was to be done, it would have to be done in a way that gives Imperial Frigates a different role in the Imperial fleet than in the Rebel fleet, and until we actually get some games under our belt, we wont know exactly what that is.

Well for instance, an Imp neb B with a squadron or 2 of TIEs is a very different beast to a rebel Neb B with 2 squads of shielded, torp wielding x/y/b/a-wings. That would make even a Vic flinch

+1 my friend. Nebulon-B2 Modified Frigate would fill in the gap perfectly, I think. (That and it looks damned awesome!)
